To not understand why anyone drinks wine?

Red wine tastes like vinegar. White wine tastes like toilet cleaner. Everytime I've drank rose I've had to hold my nose and get awful heartburn immediately. Prosecco and champagne are also equally disgusting. Now beer/ale/lager I love and will happily drink.

But seriously, why do so many people drink wine?

I bloody hate wine snobbery but pretending the only thing between cheap wine and expensive wine is always snobbery is bollocks.
A great deal of it is genuinely about quality.
You can get decent supermarket wine and over hyped over priced shit. But mostly if you buy cheap stuff it's going to be really poor quality.
If you like it then that's great .
I also think buying from small producers, especially local wines, matters. Independents are having enough of a struggle against the massive producers.

"Why would you drink something you don't like because you care what people think?! I really don't get that."

Neither do I OneWay. I don't judge women for drinking pints.

LordoftheTits · 27/05/2016 11:33

I dislike all alcohol apart from strawberry and lime cider and certain brands of gin. Everything else tastes awful to me!

ghostspirit · 27/05/2016 11:34

i want to know how you know what toilet cleaner taste like Wink

SistersOfPercy · 27/05/2016 11:34

In my teens I drank like a fish (craft ales and Newcastle Brown mostly, I was an odd girl), never got on with wine at all.
These days I don't drink. I've never understood why people come home from a long day and have a bottle of wine or a glass of scotch, but then I guess they don't understand why I prefer a can of coke or a cup of tea. Different strokes and all that.

Never did find a wine I enjoyed though, from cheap crap to stupidly expensive.

GreenTomatoJam · 27/05/2016 11:35

I like it (although not acidic whites, and generally not rose, and definitely not a fizzy red I tried once).

Perhaps you don't (or perhaps you're drinking bad wine if it all tastes like that)

I also dislike raw carrots, celery and sprouts, but love cabbage and broccoli. It's called Variety of Life

I personally think that cheese is fucking grim so I'm going to take a leaf out of baldbaby's book and insist all cheese eaters are suffering from false consciousness and have been duped by marketeers.

It is, after all, the only good explanation for eating fucked-up milk and now I feel all superior too. See you around, suckers.

Costacoffeeplease · 27/05/2016 11:38

Gin tastes like semen??? Really???

Not the gin (or the semen) I've tasted

JeanGenie23 · 27/05/2016 11:39

I like it, and often need a large large glass of it come Friday Grin

HyacinthBouquetNo1 · 27/05/2016 11:41

Did someone mention cheese? Love cheese, its my favourite food of all time, well, that and chocolate Grin

Pseudo341 · 27/05/2016 11:42

Costa, yes it does! Not immediately, it's the lingering after taste. Though I appreciate not everyone finds this the case. I think sense of taste varies greatly from person to person.

I don't think anyone is going round tasting toilet cleaner, but your senses of smell and taste are very closely linked so you can get a good idea of what something tastes like from it's smell.

notonyurjellybellynelly · 27/05/2016 11:42

I like wine but can't drink beers.

My favourite tipple is Prosecco and after doing a Prosecco tour on holiday a couple of weeks ago I love it even more.

In fact I loved every Italian wine I went on to drink over my 3 week trip. It's absolutely gorgeous. Even the Reds which usually give me a stinking migraine but not this time - Italian wine is just lovely.

ghostyslovesheep · 27/05/2016 11:43

you like what you like - not sure why you need to post to ask if you are being unreasonable? Confused

Fortunately though cheese doesn't give rise to the same health and social problems that alcohol does. I don't have a problem with people feeling all sophisticated for eating extra-pungent, artisanal cheeses or for cheese makers promoting it as such. At the end of the day I'm not going to have to pick up the pieces from some fool's cheese binge.

dillydotty · 27/05/2016 11:49

I love wine. So does DP, it makes me very frisky Wink

OneMillionScovilles · 27/05/2016 11:49

Birds - Vodka good and Baileys good? Or Vodka-and-Baileys? Cos the latter's how I read it, and all I could think of was the curdling...

LagunaBubbles · 27/05/2016 11:51

You really dont understand OP that everyone is different, which makes us all have different tastes - because it doesnt sound like you do because YOU dont like wine, not everyone has to think the same as you you know...

Anyway I have no idea if white wine tastes like toilet cleaner because Ive never drank any toilet cleaner to compare it to!

What's wrong with coming home at the end of a hard week, sitting in your garden in the warming afternoon sun, kicking off your shoes and relaxing with a lovely chilled glass of Toilet Duck? Or heading to a pub in winter and thawing out by their wood fire, cradling a tumbler of Sarson's?

You're missing out, OP. Smile

scampimom · 27/05/2016 11:57

And if you've never tried a Domestos Daquiri, you've not lived.

teraculum29 · 27/05/2016 12:00

lol

I can ask the opposite why do ppl drink beer/lager/ale?? it taste awful...

but wine hmmm,... nice Grin

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 27/05/2016 12:02

Different strokes for different folks. Wine wouldn't be my first choice of alcoholic drink, but some folks really like it. I don't get why southerners tip up a pint of lager with lemonade (not a shandy but a tiny dash of lemonade) the combination of bitter and cloyingly sweet. Boak.

I feel much the same about coffee and sugar. It doesn't make the coffee taste less bitter it tastes like an unappealing jumble of taste in my mouth.

londonrach · 27/05/2016 12:02

I miss wine!!!!!!!!!!! 8-10 weeks and counting. Breast feeding and having a glass of wine means baby sleeps better..right?😉

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 27/05/2016 12:05

BaldBaby - you've got a real chip on your shoulder! Just for the record, normalish people like me eat and drink what we enjoy and can afford. I don't buy a wine because it's expensive, you big wally. And as for cheese, the stinkier the better. It tastes amazing! A fridge should smell of nappies. I can picture you seething away with a slice of mild cheddar (a fridge staple - don't get me wrong) as I devour a wadge of Stilton. I love the taste. It really is as simple as that.
