She wore this dress to the semi-finals of BFT

cupid - the point is, men don't need to dress like that to be noticed. They are judged on their merit.

Women, sadly, are judged on how useful or attractive they can be to men.

And women piling in on each other like this only perpetuates it.

Agree with Pike. WHY exactly do we need to see bare backs, legs, bare anything? Are women incapable of being confident and classy WITHOUT showing flesh? Maybe their brains heat up so much with all the judging and marking, they need air to circulate through their nethers...

Not just AH or Alesha either, any woman entertainer for that matter. I would still listen to a woman if she was dressed in a poloneck or a lumberjack shirt. And what is this crap about showing off "her hard work"? Is that all fitness is? Showing off your abs and arms? Depressing...

MrsHathaway · 25/05/2016 10:46

My DP works in the media world and has to see AH all the time. Sadly he says that she is really lovely which is deeply disappointing

WTF? Why? Confused Would it make your day if you could hate her or something?

I read it as "since she is so lovely she shouldn't have to rely on being a stunning body rather than a valuable thinking human being".

molyholy · 25/05/2016 10:49

It's her desperate attempt to be seen as 'sexy'.

She can wear whatever she wants but I am allowed to have the opinion that yea, she does seem desperate, which is quite sad really, looking for validation.

littleGreenDragon · 25/05/2016 10:58

I seriously doubt it's her anything - it will be some stylist having picked it out to match a set of requirements from the program people.

She may have some sway - but no idea what choice she had - but then she may well be clued up enough to know part of her role is to make headlines and generate clicks to promote the show which is paying her wage.

Perhaps the dress - which TBF she doesn't look bad in was the best of a bad lot - the most conservative who knows.

" I seriously doubt it's her anything - it will be some stylist having picked it out to match a set of requirements from the program people."

This. Plus I think she looks great, and probably feels^ great. If I'd hosted an event (at my skinniest, when I felt confident showing a lot more skin) I'd have loved a dress like that. Would decline now, but then my ass and thighs aren't anywhere near as nice as Amanda Holden's, who's probably way more physically fit than me and in better health generally. If she wants to wear a skimpy dress, she has as much right to, as I do to have a pierced tongue, dyed hair, and tattoos. Each to their own.

WellErrr · 25/05/2016 11:15

I would still listen to a woman if she was dressed in a poloneck or a lumberjack shirt.

So would I, but we'd be in the minority, unfortunately.

In our society, women are judged foremost on how they look.

It's a good way of keeping us down, all the best dressed/worst dressed columns etc, encouraging women to turn on each other. As this thread ably demonstrates.

cupidsgame · 25/05/2016 11:18

WellErr I agree that women often have to go half naked to get attention, and men don't, (but lots of men have relied on looks alone to get noticed).....the truly talented women don't. Susan Boyle for example relied on sheer talent to get where she did.I suppose it's how desperate you are for fame. Desperate women for fame and men ready to exploit them for that should really take equal blame perhaps.

littleGreenDragon · 25/05/2016 11:20

I'm less cynical - I'd suspect good personable female presented would still get the same audience what ever they wore.

However I don't think the people making programs and putting up money do often believe that enough to risk finding out - so it probably easier to go along convention and accepted wisdom and feels less risky.

The only thing that will keep Amanda Holden down are some of the attitudes that this thread shows. Women who consider other women who spend more time on their appearance, more money, or dress "differently" beneath them. Who won't take them seriously.

Who start threads wondering that AH's "attempts to grab the limelight are growing increasingly desperate".

Someone who wants a good bitch fest about another womens appearance. If you don't like her, ignore her and tell your kids she's "silly and backward". No need to instigate 8 pages of personal attacks about her.

AliceThrewTheFookingGlass · 25/05/2016 11:27

And look at the reaction from the judges and the audience when she went on stage. She was immediately judged on appearance (and probably age as well). I don't think a bloke would have had the same reaction -

Paul Potts.

Chippednailvarnishing · 25/05/2016 11:31

Jonathan and Charlotte

cupidsgame · 25/05/2016 11:35

I'm not sure about that, was it Paul Potts who went on and because of the way he looked was immediately dismissed but then blew them all away with his voice. There are many men in the industry who seem to rely on looks alone to get by.

cupidsgame · 25/05/2016 11:35

Cross post, sorry.

I think everyone "judges" on first impressions. There is not a problem with that at all. It only becomes a problem if you allow those first impressions to become prejudices and are not prepared to let them go.

I always have a first impression of someone. The key it that I don't take that to be fixed.

cupidsgame · 25/05/2016 12:13

Some women can just stand on a stage and sing, some have to wear a leotard (was it Beyoncé who started it all) and dance like they're in some kind of cheap porno movie. Miley Cyrus, Cheryl Cole, Rhianna, Madonna and many many more.....they call it women's liberation,.....hmm wonder what Emily Pankhurst, the woman who fought for the right for women to vote would think of that.

ivykaty44 · 25/05/2016 12:17

I was just amazed at the colour AH turned in the sun, has she been on holiday somewhere exotic to go that colour?

Notonthestairs · 25/05/2016 12:33

I took my mum to see AH in Thoroughly Modern Millie and she was brilliant. Also I loved her in the programme about hairdressers - I cant remember the name but it was good fun soap opera viewing.
So I really dont mind her at all.

I dont like the dress but then I am a knackered forty something and the sight of a lean and fit forty something (or late thirties whatever) makes me feel inadequate, saggy and even more tired. I am not proud of that BTW and recognise thats my problem not hers.

Agree women who want to have a media prescence have to dress up to be heard/noticed. But Christine Lagarde, Sheryl Sandberg etc dont - so I so think its reserved for those that rely on publicity to make their living that have to dress a particular way.

EnidButton · 25/05/2016 12:48

Going back to the first page here but, WTF is wrong with her teeth Jimjam? Confused Here's a photo so you can make sure you have the right person because she appears to have almost perfect teeth. They're not fake, perfectly uniform veneers if that's what you mean?

To think that Amanda Holden's attempts to grab the limelight are growing increasingly desperate
DaisyArcher · 25/05/2016 12:50

Cutting It - was the name of the hairdressing drama (I think) and AH was very good in it. However, she can earn much more money being at Simon Cowell's bidding than she can as an actress.

I'm not jealous. Even without the botox and fillers she's much more attractive than I could ever be. She was a natural beauty. I wouldn't wear a dress like that even if I had the figure. I suspect those who say they would are the type who claim getting your kit off is 'empowering'.
