To think it's not on to shout abuse out the window at people!?

I was walking into town yesterday when a white van drove past me and a man shouted fatty out the window at me Angry

I'm absolutely mortified and so glad that I was on my own I would have died if there was anyone with me!

I am rather fat at the moment, I had twins less than a year ago and I'm struggling to find time to exercise but surely even if I was 25 stone or something it doesn't give someone the right to embarrass me like that.

Don't know why I'm posting really but I can't tell anyone in real life and it's really bothering me.

I got shouted at a lot when I was pregnant. Was on the bus one night traveling from my dads to town I was living in. Dh was going to meet me. Bunch knobs got off at stop before me and banged on window where I was sat. They didn't say anything but being 7 months pregnant I felt vulnerable.

nocoffeenouppee · 12/05/2016 15:48

I've had this too. Usually when I'm on the thinner end of things (still fat, just not at my heaviest). I've had men shout that KFC is in the other direction, I'm going the wrong way, the classic 'fatty'. And my particular favourite- I once had a man come up to me in a nightclub, grab a handful of fat from my stomach really hard, try and twist it and then walk off. I also used to cycle when I was a student but only early in the morning because even then I was subject to abusive comments. Ignore them (easier said than done) they are obnoxious cowards.

DailyMaui · 12/05/2016 15:49

I had a guy in a van hit my arse when I was cycling once. They were going quite fast so they knocked me off my bike almost into the path of the following car. That car stopped to help and another car raced off after them and returned with the number plate and company name. I repirted it to the police and the I wasn't hurt thankfully just bruised. The the men in the van ended up getting the sack. I was most pleased.

I live very near a girls school and the ogling and sexual comments that I hear from men to very young girls every single day on my commute disgusts me. That will be my daughter shortly and it makes me so fucking angry.

LordoftheTits · 12/05/2016 15:54

I was walking the dog a few months ago and a young boy shouted "you're ugly!" out of a passing car. I looked up and both he and the grown man driving the car were laughing Hmm

BillBrysonsBeard · 12/05/2016 15:56

These are vile! Vincent your response was hilarious, love it Grin

These men are cruel pond scum. Same types that you see on the news being football hooligans, same types who cause trouble on holiday and give Brits a bad name. There is an element of control in it, they hate women and are ugly as pigshit themselves so want to make someone else feel awful. They can't get the attention of women in a nice way so resort to getting a reaction from them by being a cunt.
Not speaking about all men by the way, no-one I know would do this. Just a certain section of men who haven't evolved much..

chanelfreak · 12/05/2016 15:58

Bill it's not just Brits - I don't live in the UK and it is just as prevalent here unfortunately. Being that type of a wanker seems to be universal, sadly.

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 12/05/2016 15:59

This is why I prefer to run at night, because that way the wankers can't really see me to be able to shout at me as they drive past. My friend was out running and had a guy run up behind her and slap her arse so hard he left a bruise.

I used to do an outdoor boot camp type thing too and we had to move locations because we just had an endless stream of bellends from van drivers to dog walkers shouting stuff at us.

I struggle to imagine what goes through their heads (not much presumably) when they make the decision to yell abuse or sexually harass women on the street.

I've had this twice in the past week - both times whilst with my children. I'm an average sized woman so it's not prompted by me looking sexy or rough. I had it happen every week during the summer parts of my two pregnancies. I did report the ones that did it from work vans but their companies didn't reply. Now Twitter is so big I might report them on their in future. Perhaps that's a plan?

Public space isn't public. It's men's space and their reminding us of that.

NotQuiteJustYet · 12/05/2016 16:15

I had this happen to me last winter, it's so humiliating Blush

I had just walked up a hill to the doctors (mid-asthma attack, coincidentally what I was going to the doctors for) looking rather out of breath as you would expect for someone who can't breathe. A van drove past me, yelled the obligatory 'fatty' out of the window and then deliberately swerved into a puddle and soaked me. Admittedly I have a bit to lose, but only a few stone - nothing that I thought required public mockery!

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I think I muttered a few choice profanities under my breath and carried on with my asthma attack in silent rage.

PerpendicularVincent · 12/05/2016 16:19

Sharon, sounds like you handled yourself brilliantly Grin. I also covet your username!

Bill, thank you I was furious. I always argue back now

BillBrysonsBeard · 12/05/2016 16:26

chanelfreak Oh absolutely, I lived in the ME and it was the same, males shouting stuff from their cars. The difference there was it was teenage boys rather than men, they seemed to grow up and get some shame...

Definitely not on. Wankers.

furryleopard · 12/05/2016 17:18

I was once walking on a main road with my Mum and my older sister, I was about 23 so not a kid. Some men on a minibus started jeering at us as they went past slowly in traffic. Then one of them stood at the open door and started shouting 'nice tits'. Well I lost my rag and ran after the mini bus and shouted some abuse back, I invited him to come and say it to my face but not with that language. He very quickly retreated back into his cave. He didn't expect me to come back at him, it was a pure power trip over three women. Incidentally my Mum is a very proper lady and doesn't believe people swear in real life. She never said at word at me turning the air blue.

FutureGadgetsLab · 12/05/2016 17:19

Miaow That is horrible and I'm angry on your behalf!

Birdsgottafly · 12/05/2016 17:29

""These men are cruel pond scum. Same types that you see on the news being football hooligans, same types who cause trouble on holiday and give Brits a bad name.""

Unfortunately they aren't, I've had and seen/known otherwise 'decent' men think it's acceptable to do this.

I was a Mature Student and even the younger men who were training to be Teachers/SWs etc, carried on, something terrible. Our College was next to a Peter Lloyd Centre, I used to cross the car park and witness the abuse shouted.

Even well educated/otherwise seemingly 'nice' men, don't get Everyday Sexism, a lot of Women, don't either.

Peachesandcream15 · 12/05/2016 17:49

It's usually out of car windows isn't it? Makes it easy for them to drive off quickly afterwards so they don't have to face the consequences of their actions. Cowards.

Wagglebees · 12/05/2016 17:52

I've had the yelling noise, beeping and sexual comments from speeding vans, a few times. I used to walk everywhere on my own so I guess they thought a young looking lone woman was fair game. Twats.

A couple of summers ago though I was trying to cross a car park and was feeling very unwell. Turns out it was the start of a chronic illness so I was very poorly and unsteady on my feet. Just as I started to step out a car came along so I had to step back and lost my balance slightly. I guess my face was slightly screwed up from the pain and trying to keep upright. Anyway the driver lent right out of his window and yelled something like "Hard luck bitch face" whilst laughing. His girlfriend next to him was laughing too. I got to my car and cried. Blush I think it was because I was feeling vulnerable and because a woman had found it funny too.

Anyway it's total bastards that do it. Bullies that are missing something in their lives.

fieldfare · 12/05/2016 18:05

If you get the vehicle reg then name and shame on local FB site.
It's ridiculous.
I'm pretty big atm but I guess I must be invisible as I've not had comments etc recently. When slimmer I've had the obligatory "nice tits" shouted from van windows.

The worst I've had, when I actually felt threatened, was a yodel deliverydriver Who when I told the dog to go to bed (he comes to see who's at the door) said "that's the best offer I've had all day darlin', old man not home?" And then he tried to step inside the door! I freaked out, asked him what the fuck he was playing at, shoved him backwards with the dog growling beside me, shut the door and burst into tears. Dh rang and lodged a complaint and the man was fired.
Why do they think they have the right to behave in such a disgusting manner?!

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 12/05/2016 18:19

Its not just men sadly. I am ill and look like a bag of shit currently just to go hand in hand with how I feel. A couple of charming females driving into the close pointed and sniggered at me going to the car with my baby. Cunts.

Kingofthestupids · 12/05/2016 18:45

When I was 12 a man came up to me in a busy high street and shouted 'fat, ugly, minger', right in my face. I was mortified and the effect it had on my confidence was devastating. I truly believed that it must be true for him to pick me out of all the 100s of people on that street.

20 years later I realise that he was just an absolute tool, and I was just an average child.
