To send DS to school without a snack?

They all sit and eat their snack at morning break. DS has to leave the house in 3 minutes. He was first asked 42 minutes ago to get dressed. He has been asked/told several times since and told to come and present himself to me fully dressed and then I will make his snack.

He is still in pyjamas. Would it be totally wrong to send him today with just his water bottle?

I'd be tempted to send him to school in his pyjamas! (with uniform in a bag)He might speed up a bit tomorrow.

How old is he? Now you've said it I think you have to stick to it, but 'no snack' seems an odd punishment for not getting dressed.

I'd say it depends on age. At eight, probably yes. At thirteen, not at all.

I used to regularly threaten my eldest with going to school in his pyjamas if he didn't pull his finger out and get dressed.

Snack is no biggie, my 7 year old hasn't been taking one this week when it's been hot as he's been having a larger breakfast and prefers to spend his time running about.

What kind of snack are you making for breaktime? Can he not just lift a bit of fruit or a pack of mini cheddars or the like? thats what mine do.

I wouldn't punish (or reward) with food. IMO what you do next depends on his age. Is this his normal behaviour?

A mum did send child in pyjamas once. She put him in the car, brought him to school late ( about 5-10 m) and fetched his uniform. Told my friend he wouldn't get dressed and she was fed up. All the kids laughed and he was dressed in about 2 mins.He never did it again.
Our kids aren't allowed to bring snack so I can't see a problem. Remove something tonight...I pad, x box etc

I think YABVU. His being slow to get ready has nothing to do with his snack!

How old is he? Why do you need to "make" his snack? Chuck a banana in his bag.

Plus it seems odd to punish getting dressed with snack. Have you heard of natural consequences? I think it would be - if you don't get dressed you'll still be in your pyjamas for school :D

Food shouldn't be a punishment. You wouldn't stop your child sleeping as a punishment, so why withhold food? A mid morning snack is needed for them to function well during the day, it shouldn't be seen as an optional treat.

My mum used food as a major battleground when I was a child. I spent years with eating disorders because I associated food with control.

I would give consequences, but I wouldn't give a punishment which school effectively has to put into place. If he gets upset about it, or hungry and cranky before lunch, the teachers will get the fall out. If he's old enough, I would have a consequence when he gets home.

Find a better way of dealing with this than possibly making him hungry from playtime until lunch. That won't teach him a lesson. It'll just make him grumpy and possibly less able to concentrate in school.

I don't understand the link between getting dressed and snack either. Or asking MN 3 mins before he needs to go

I'm shocked that on another thread parents were advocating letting child go in with uniform and so school would have to supervise getting the child dressed. As a teacher, I'd be unimpressed if a parent did this, getting us to dish out the punishment.

I think you'll have to follow through with the snack now but next time use something at home e.g losing tv time. Giving him no snack will make him miserable and not ready to learn, which the school will have to deal with.
