To offer this for tea...

roleypoley · 10/05/2016 20:39

Spinach and ricotta cannelloni (from a packet) with salad. DP is furious. Says when he asked earlier what was for tea I should have said 'nothing'. There is also fish in the freezer but that takes half an hour so apparently is unacceptable at 8pm. I've had enough of his mood and gone upstairs with my half packet of spinach and ricotta cannelloni & he's ordered a take away!

Madein1995 has it. There's too many people slating tbe DH here. It's nothing to do with feminism. It's everything to do with the person at home making sure there's enough food in to feed the family. And communicating with the other what's on offer that evening so that if they don't fancy it they can sort something else out.
My DH and I both work full time in senior city jobs and we have very little time - this is what we do. It does all fall down sometimes but the intent is there. We tend to do a small ish weekly shop in Sunday to plan fo the week and we live next door to waitrose so we top up on way home from work.

NicknameUsed · 12/05/2016 12:56

It's just me and my family who finds filled pasta filling then. Served with pesto and a huge salad it keeps me feeling full for hours.

I have no idea how many calories that meal contains but I bet it would be a good deal more than 250. I would still be hungry after a meal of only 250 calories

NicknameUsed · 12/05/2016 12:57

Oh, and loads of gated cheese on the top as well.

Debsrocks · 12/05/2016 13:25

I don't see the issue as being whether or not the food was filling or not. His response was out of line - behaving like Lord & Master of the House whose servant has failed to provide. In my house the conversation would be more along the lines of;

DH: What are we having?
DW: We have this ravioli, maybe with a bit of salad?
DH: FFS, that wouldn't feed a bird, will I throw on a few chips & garlic bread to go with it?
DW: Sounds fab, give me a shout when it's ready, I'll just pour myself a glass of wine while I'm waiting...

I have the most easygoing DH in the world but really this should not have been such a big deal. OP, your DH needs a kick up the jacksie...

Ambroxide · 12/05/2016 15:39

NicknameUsed, not just you! Me too. Mind, I put tons of butter and cheese on mine (probably as many calories as the pasta).

NicknameUsed · 12/05/2016 15:58

Right, I have had a look at a pack of filled pasta that I have in my freezer. One third of a pack contains 325 calories. This with pesto and grated cheese, plus a large salad with dressing would make a substantial meal for most people.

BillSykesDog · 12/05/2016 16:12

She's already posted the product details. Half a pack of the ravioli she used is 297 calories. She wasn't offering grated cheese or pesto and didn't indicate any was available (there was def no pesto though). That would be 350 calories with a salad.

That's not enough for a decent meal. Even three meals a day at 350 calories is just 1150. That's a weight loss diet level of calories for a woman of small build.

NicknameUsed · 12/05/2016 17:18

I'm pretty sure that my pasta dinners are far more than 350 calories. I am not stingy with pesto, cheese or salad dressing.

BillSykesDog · 12/05/2016 18:27

What's the relevance of that? He wasn't eating one of your pasta dinners was he?

NicknameUsed · 12/05/2016 18:40

The thread developed so I followed the development.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2016 18:53

He reacted like an arse, but that really wouldn't be enough food for me. I'm not obese, either.

I'd need more food.

lastqueenofscotland · 12/05/2016 19:45

He was an arse but I'd probably want at least some garlic bread or salad with it.
Before anyone asks my bmi is 20.

BillSykesDog · 12/05/2016 19:59

It's not really logical though is it? YANBU, because if it had been a totally different meal that you had no intention of making it would have been loads of food.

It wasn't the meal you cook. It was 125g dry pasta with no sauce or cheese.

DMjournosrscum · 12/05/2016 20:14

I am the only one sat here thinking why am so overweight when I think that is a filling meal and everyone seems to think it's a snack! I obviously have the metabolism from hell! I can't even have the weekly points on ww if I want to lose weight!

BabyGanoush · 12/05/2016 20:16

Slow metabolism?

2rebecca · 12/05/2016 22:01

Lack of exercise? I think the people who want pasta and chips and garlic bread must do loads of running to stay slim though, that is serious carb overload. I prefer to still feel a bit hungry when I finish a meal as well and hate feeling stuffed.

herecomethepotatoes · 13/05/2016 01:29

DMJournoscum

Lack of exercise.

puglife15 · 13/05/2016 04:53

I think this is fine personally, assuming you have snacks in the house so can help yourselves to more food if you're still hungry. Pasta with cheese and spinach is a perfectly acceptable meal and my DH agrees. And he could have had fish if he didn't fancy it. To get into a strop about it is silly.

I would have put some olive oil and parmesan plus loads of black pepper on the pasta in lieu of a sauce. Tastes fine.

RhiWrites · 13/05/2016 05:13

My partner and I are big eaters but we'd split a pack of filled pasta on a bed of spinach. No sauce needed although a bit of olive oil would be good. It has cheese in it so doesn't need more cheese on top (people are obsessed with putting completely unneccesary cheese on pasta). It also doesn't need garlic bread.

But even if opinions differ about the size of the meal, OP's husband was rude to call that 'nothing'.

dizzytomato · 13/05/2016 06:08

That stuff is really filing. A half pack is nearly 300 calories (297 to be exact). Add a salad and a bowl of cheerios and that's more like a 700 calorie meal, which is fine if you had a light lunch. Can he really not cope with easy food once in a while? Bless his precious little socks Hmm

PlumPurple · 13/05/2016 06:11

Rude! Sounds like he's stressed and an arse. Id leave him to fend for himself, ignore him, and have a nice long bath :)

Lpel · 13/05/2016 06:59

I can see that this pack of raviolli is going to become the new MN chicken - by the time we get to the next page it'll be enough to feed a family of 4 for 3 meals with enough scraps to make soup

BitOutOfPractice · 13/05/2016 07:02

dizzy a half pack is 125 calories

Perhaps there is more than one pack size and more than one calorie amount? Half a pack is usually way more than 125 calories, usually more like 3-400, so a whole pack would really be quite a big meal, especially if things are added.

I find the suggested portion size of this sort of thing small, but quite a lot of calories for what you get, so I would usually add vegetables or salad and a tomato based sauce rather than lots of butter, cheese, oil etc.

Whether or not this is a suitable evening meal depends on activity levels and what has been consumed over the rest of the day. I don't think the OP has said whether this is the main meal of the day for example, maybe they had this at lunchtime, lots of people do. And the fact that there is no meat is irrelevant etc - it is not necessary for a meal to contain meat, whether they are vegetarian or not.

But the one thing that is absolutely not acceptable is the DHs reaction to the meal offered. It sounds like he wants the meal of his choice magically presented to him with no thought or effort on his part. And what if they can't afford a takeaway? Pretty selfish and unreasonable of him.
