To think summer is a miserable time for fat people?

HackerFucker22 · 06/05/2016 14:31

Caveat by saying immediately I am a good 2st (actually closer to 3st!!) overweight so this isn't a fat bashing thread.

First few proper sunny days and I am frantically trying to find weather appropriate clothes that don't make me look like a whale.

I am hot and sweaty

I am stressed as I have 3 weddings need 2 outfits and I can't find a damn thing.

I went out to buy some new tops today and came back with baggy, shapeless t-shirts.

I am dreading the next few months.

I find summer miserable too, I was a size 28 at my biggest now a size 20-22 and it's horrible. I own a few maxi dresses but feel stupid in them as I'm not only fat but a short arse. I've not worn a pair of shorts since I was 16 (and a size 10 😢), I wouldn't subject the world to my flabby arms so everything is at least 3/4 length sleeves or has a cardigan over the top.

I have no idea of what to wear for summer but I know I'm getting sick of wearing jeans in the summer and spending y time feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed all the time. I'm loosing weight slowly but still.....

Would love to know what you larger ladies who are confident wear in the summer.

fluffiphlox · 06/05/2016 15:43

I don't suit a summer-style maxi. When I've tried those floral numbers on I've looked like I've escaped from somewhere wearing a 1970s nightie. Good on you if you can pull the look off.

SuperFlyHigh · 06/05/2016 15:46

crazy no worries! Smile

MoonriseKingdom · 06/05/2016 15:47

Can I join in the hot weather moans. Am not overweight but am pregnant, due September and dreading hot, sleepless nights. I also have the type of milk bottle white skin that burns at the merest hint of sun. So I have to spend the summer drenched in factor 30 which adds to the general icky uncomfortableness.

DustyMaiden · 06/05/2016 15:48

I don't know why but I never sweat. I just get redder and redder, look like I might explode.

The weather today is lovely, not too hot. Just been for lunch in pub garden.

DerelictMyBalls · 06/05/2016 15:48

I agree that polyester print maxi dresses rarely look stylish (but I am sure no-one cares what I think!).

I tend to spend the summer in shorts - they have to be short-shorts, though, since the legs tend to ride up in the middle if they are mid-thigh-length. Denim cutoffs are ideal since you can get them to the exact length you like.

My problem is dressing for work, though. I can never manage to be cool AND smart - it's one or the other!

GarlicShake · 06/05/2016 15:49

Doesn't it depend on your attitude? If you think this is horrid, you're just not going to be happy. I think she looks gorgeous! The fabric's dodgy - it's a £15 Asos dress - but the way she wears her shape is fab :)

I think this looks lovely with flats or heels. Nice and floaty, and no chub rub.

I wear leggings and tunics in summer for work - smart Bodeny ones. Tunics must be long though, none of that hip grazing 'tunic'.

Just smart enough - I always wear navy and no see through leggings

ShelaghTurner · 06/05/2016 15:52

Fantastic. I'll take back the dresses I was trying for dd1's communion next weekend. Thanks for that Tigger. It's taken me long enough to find something I liked but God forbid that I offend random people with what I wear. Hmm

wol1968 · 06/05/2016 15:52

Don't know about maxi dresses on larger women, but maxi dresses on small women look equally dreadful. Mainly because the waists sit somewhere around mid-bum and the skirts drag along on the floor with a spare 3-4 inches of material gathering up all the dirt and dust...

(maybe I should just use them to sweep up the kitchen floor? Grin)

DerelictMyBalls · 06/05/2016 15:57

Shelagh, why would one anonymous person's opinion matter so much to you? If you feel good in something, wear it. I'm sure you won't bump into Tigger!

MaddyHatter · 06/05/2016 15:58

i'm a fatty at a size 26, i like to wear tunics/skater dresses and leggings.

I'm fat, i know i'm fat, its a matter of dressing to feel good.

I'm also lucky in that i'm not a hugely sweaty persons, so i dont get the facial sweating thing, its the back of my head under my hair that i get it.. horrid!

MorrisZapp · 06/05/2016 15:58

No no no. Don't use lanacane.

You need Body Glide. Get it on amazon.

bertsdinner · 06/05/2016 15:59

My sister's quite big (18), and likes a maxi dress, I think they look good on her. She got a couple of jersey ones that are sort of loose but not baggy, I think they look very flattering. Midi is a nice style too.

SuperFlyHigh · 06/05/2016 15:59

wol I agree re maxi dresses re small women, used to have a colleague who was 5 ft 2 but big breasts (think E or F at minimum and big with it...) who used to wear strapless maxi dresses to work that just trailed the floor with no bra at all... I often wondered if I were to step on the hem what would happen!

She looked quite proud in them and fancied herself as stylish....

Derelict Asos curve is your friend!

I'm a 12 but huge norks (28FF) but still the pups need support! Grin

Ninjagogo · 06/05/2016 16:00

Loving the idea of a maxi dress cum floor cloth Grin . I also dislike summer heat, and am finding Yorkshire too hot this week!

scampimom · 06/05/2016 16:00

Crikey yeah, look at the state of this old dog. Rough.As.Feck. Well worth a snide chuckle behind her back.

Body Glide is brilliant. Also, Torrid Fashion do some lovely styles in sizes up to a 28: www.torrid.com/

Plus there's an online store called Lindy Bop that does kind of classic/vintage-designed dresses - they mostly suit "curvy" figures, which not all big ladies have, but if you do have one, they're pretty good: www.lindybop.co.uk/

ElspethFlashman · 06/05/2016 16:02

I think capri leggings look great on generous figures. Gives your legs a lovely shape.

As long as they're not grey or white.

In fact there should be a general rule that only navy or black leggings should be sold in shops.

SharonSignsToCherryRed · 06/05/2016 16:03

If you suffer with sweaty scalp/dripping hair and face, can I recommended something called Odaban? I am menopausal and sweat like a sweaty bastard. You put a bit on your scalp at night and it really helps dry you up. I get mine of Amazon and it lasts ages.

shinynewusername · 06/05/2016 16:03

Agree that it is height, not weight, that is the issue with maxi dresses. As a short arse, they make me look like a 5 year old playing princesses in her mum's nightie Smile

ClopySow · 06/05/2016 16:04

Summer is bloody misery for me. Was when i was a size 10, still is at size 18.

My sweat moustache usually starts in April. It's been a bit late this year because of the snow and ice, but it's arrived now. There's something up with my thermostat, it's set too high, i'm sure of it.

I nearly cried when i saw that we were in for a heatwave. Roll on october when i can get me knitted dresses and knee high boots out.

But yeah, summer wardrobes aren't designed for people over size 14ish. I'd like to wear bare legs with dresses, but i read on here that bare legs, even thin ones, are vulgar. When we're being judged by other women with really set ideas about what's considered acceptable, we're pretty fucked whatever we wear.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 06/05/2016 16:06

I'm chunky and I like a good maxi dress. Looks better on me in the summer than shorts or a short skirt.

Good job I wasn't put on this planet for you and your horrible friends' viewing pleasure, Tigger, otherwise I might be inclined to follow your crap 'fashion advice'.

Drbint · 06/05/2016 16:07

Do they bollocks. I'm a right shortarse and I look damned fine in maxi.
