To think summer is a miserable time for fat people?

HackerFucker22 · 06/05/2016 14:31

Caveat by saying immediately I am a good 2st (actually closer to 3st!!) overweight so this isn't a fat bashing thread.

First few proper sunny days and I am frantically trying to find weather appropriate clothes that don't make me look like a whale.

I am hot and sweaty

I am stressed as I have 3 weddings need 2 outfits and I can't find a damn thing.

I went out to buy some new tops today and came back with baggy, shapeless t-shirts.

I am dreading the next few months.

It's 40C here today.
I like linen trousers and a longer length tee-shirt.
On the days I venture into a dress, it's with these underneath.

I tend to go for slimish fitting top with wide bottoms, or tighter fit bottoms with a looser top. Otherwise I just balloon in size in the mirror.

Shirt style cotton is cooler than tee-shirt cotton.

Anyone got some shopping ideas? I've got a years worth of shopping to do when I'm back in the UK for June.

amarmai · 06/05/2016 18:19

re the thighs rubbing , i use-men's boxer shorts, tights cut off around the knee, culottes,PJ pants

FannyFerknackerpan · 06/05/2016 18:30

I'm not fat. But I am quite a sweaty person (why God, why?!). Also, I hate my legs with a passion, so hate shorts and any skirts on or above the knee.

I probably pass off summer clothing okay, but I feel like total shit.

Much prefer to be in jeans and a massive cosy jumper.

Toddzoid · 06/05/2016 18:30

Maxi dresses aren't for everyone but that's not weight dependent, I think it's a body shape thing... It just drowns certain figures out and can make them appear bigger than they are. I'm not a fan of maxi dresses personally and I'm a size 10.

I did used to be obese though so completely feel your pain. I used to live in leggings all year round, I'd just get the cropped ones out for summer Sad. So sweaty and miserable all of the time, counted down the days till Autumn. I'm still not the biggest fan of summer now I've lost the weight. I seem to have inherited (if that's the sort of thing one does inherit) my mother's sweaty face. I don't sweat anywhere else at all- feet, armpits all fine but it pours from my forehead and upper lip. Gross.

Maxi dresses are awful if you are overweight - been there, done that. Never, ever, again.
As for summer days being miserable, they are only miserable if you let them be miserable!

Honestly I am a pretty happy soul, but itchy sore skin, itchy sore eyes, asthma and sun giddiness would make a fucking care bear mildly psychopathic

Fluffyears · 06/05/2016 18:42

Just had to buy some size 20 shorts as my medication had made me gain two dress sizes. I fucking rock my maxi dresses and gave never see anyone's 'eyes following' someone wearing one. You and your friends sounds like utter dicks tbh. I second a pp who said bandelettes for the chub rub and I get mine from etsy (hadn't worn a dress in 7 years without tights before these little beauties). The other option is to check out the big bloomer company. The do done seamless shirts and delivery is really quick. I have two pairs in different lengths. Wore them on a ten mile walk last year in the heat of London and they stopped the rubbing and were quite breathable x

Unless you are about 7 stone hot weather is awful! But I grew up in a very cold part of the country and have always run warm, like a double-coated dog. I need to drink a lot of cold water in the summer to stay cool and it really helps.

sunflowersinthesun · 06/05/2016 18:58

I am a good 6 stone overweight (size 22) and I LOVE the summer! It's certainly never been a "miserable" time for me?!

I love wearing maxis and floaty tunics, short skirts, etc in summer. I couldn't care less what people might think of my chunky arms and legs.

If my face gets hot, I fan it/spray it, carry lots of water and spend time in the shade, pretty much what other people do anyway

BMW6 · 06/05/2016 19:07

I passed a chap in the street today and he was dressed in a white Shalwar Kameez (long wide trousers and loose tunic top that is knee length).

It looked so cool and comfortable, and classy, that I'm thinking why can't I get one?

Though I don't think it would look half as good on me and God knows what size I would have to get to accommodate the massive boobies......

AuntDotsie · 06/05/2016 19:10

Size 24 here. I love my maxi dresses, and anyone who doesn't can sod right off. To be honest, if you're fat, you're going to get picked on for something (there are always people all too eager to shout at 'fatties') so you might as well be cool while it's happening.

But yes, summer is awful. I love spring - sunshine and cool breezes. Hot humid summers, on the other hand, should go fuck a pig.

Arseface · 06/05/2016 19:11

I'm a size 8/10 and I hear you loud and clear OP. It's impossible to find decent summer clothes.
Wafting about in a dress all day is fine if you can find a decent dress and have fuck all to do.
I work from home most of the week and have 4dc.
Gardening, dog walking, toddler wrangling, potty training, school run (late again!) etc is a joke in most of the clothes sold for women in summer.

And why is it all polyester or sodding linen.

Also:

Looking good in a Maxi - like everything else - is about your shape, not your size.

Even at my thinnest (8 stone, illness) I had sore thighs in summer. It's actually worse when I'm thinner as the wobbly bits at the top flap about more Blush.

Love jeans, boots and jumpers.

MintJulip · 06/05/2016 19:12

BM i alove india dress would happpily wear it.

missisbluesky · 06/05/2016 19:13

I think maxi dresses should be banned.

Unless you're very slim and the dress is well-cut and not some cheap rubbish off the high street) then the majority of women usually end up looking like Demis Roussos.

If you're large, then adding yards and yards of material (as in a maxi dress) will only serve to make you look bigger.
It's not a good look.

Larger women look better in clothes that are shaped well.

notagiraffe · 06/05/2016 19:17

Tigger I don't agree. the only photo I have of me from the past few years looking normal sized not chubby was in a maxi dress. I get compliments in them, people go and buy similar after seeing them and they even turn heads in a good way. I'm 20 lbs overweight and short but if I choose the cut carefully maxi dresses make me look like a normal weight woman with good boobs. They are far more forgiving than anything else. And I've seen friends who are bigger than me look fantastic in maxi dresses.

notagiraffe · 06/05/2016 19:18

Maxi dresses can be well cut too.

Queenbean · 06/05/2016 19:22

Scampimom the thread has moved on loads but where is that dress from, I love it!

I think in general larger women look great in maxi dresses. It doesn't make them look bigger or lumpy; but the material just glides over any bumps. There are also some lovely maxi skirts which can be paired with a t shirt or vest too.

Lots of midi skirts as well and I think shirt dresses look lovely also.

EponasWildDaughter · 06/05/2016 19:23

Amazon do some ankle length (i'm 5' 6'') jersey dresses with a vest strap or slightly 'racer back' top (which means you can still wear a decent boulder holder under it) which are very soft and stretchy. Sizes Small to XXXL. They skim the figure more than your typical maxi dress but still suit a curvy shape IMO. I've bought a navy one and intend to wear it tomorrow! My first floor length dress. Everyone else always looks so nice in them.

Which leads me to add - I have to add i've never seen anyone big or small in a maxi dress and thought anything other than ''they look so nice and cool and easy and classy''.

sonlypuppyfat · 06/05/2016 19:24

It's not that I get hot I actually feel like I'm going to explode I can feel it building up and I start to panic. I hate summer so much

Queenbean · 06/05/2016 19:26

I am a size 12 -14 but really curvy and have this, it's gorgeous on and would look lovely on bigger sizes too

And this as well, with a thin brown belt tied loosely around the waist and the buttons undone down to the cleavage

missisbluesky · 06/05/2016 19:27

Yep. I hate summer. Sweat and chub rub are a misery.

Is chub rub a modern phenomenon?
You never heard of it 20 years ago.

There weren't any creams or lotions for it, because there wasn't a need.

Now, every second person seems to suffer from it?
Why is that? Confused

Voodooloolooshithead · 06/05/2016 19:28

I'm finding it hard to read of people hiding away and not doing the things they want to do in case people laugh/point/stare. Fuck them. Seriously, fuck them. Everyone is fabulous and people are far far too busy worrying about themselves!

I'm a 22/24 tall with massive legs and arse. I've taken to wearing palazzo pants in navy's/blacks/Browns with a co ordinating t-shirt. Fuck wearing a cardi when it's sweltering, if people are offended my my thigh sized arms, well them fuck them too!
I'm cool-ish. Luckily I have a high tolerance for the heat, but I do gravitate towards the shade when I feel that horrid prickle on my top lip/hair line.
My feet are always swollen though, sore and swollen. Roll on winter when I can hide them in boots and socks!
I'm on the look out for a maxi dress now, just to piss the haters off Grin

abbsismyhero · 06/05/2016 19:29

im a size 10ish and i still have to change my knickers because of sweat i love the heat but i hate the sun i itch like hell the only advantage of the summer is i get to garden personally i prefer a log fire nowhere to go and it can piss it down all winter (although i don't actually have a log fire Sad)
