To think summer is a miserable time for fat people?

HackerFucker22 · 06/05/2016 14:31

Caveat by saying immediately I am a good 2st (actually closer to 3st!!) overweight so this isn't a fat bashing thread.

First few proper sunny days and I am frantically trying to find weather appropriate clothes that don't make me look like a whale.

I am hot and sweaty

I am stressed as I have 3 weddings need 2 outfits and I can't find a damn thing.

I went out to buy some new tops today and came back with baggy, shapeless t-shirts.

I am dreading the next few months.

Tigger, You are quite insufferable.

Im fat and when I was slim i loved summer I hate it now I live in jumpers so Im dreading it

The80sweregreat · 06/05/2016 15:10

I've met my people - am overweight and summer clothes do not suit me. sandles also look awful ( odd shaped feet) and shopping for summer stuff is a pain. I love cooler weather, autumn when I can hide away in boots and jeans. People just think I am grumpy and talk constantly of getting out in sun and getting a tan. not for me. ( UK summers are hit and miss affairs I know, but when we get a hot spell I dread it.)

Yup - my mum in her 50s could easily be mistaken for 30.

I get id'd frequently and I am 32 with a 7yr old. I have never had a pus filled spot on my face ( but finding makeup is a bitch!)

There are some perks to my complexion

SuperFlyHigh · 06/05/2016 15:15

Wow tigger some serious put downs there!

I know some 'fat' women rock a maxi dress in flats or wedges and no one laughs.

There's a model out there now called Iskra can't think of her surname but she's a plus size model and she's not plus sized or fat but she's not small either... But she is toned and fit. She rocks all sorts of clothes and champions all figures on her website.

I actually know another woman who's ooh a14-16 maybe more but certainly not skinny and she rocks a black strappy clingy maxi dress with right shoes, belt etc. Confidence is key.

Oh also not all black or mixed race women have the black don't crack too, some but not all. And they still like to use sun protection etc. I have several friends and family who are black and mixed race etc

scampimom · 06/05/2016 15:16

THe sort of person who thinks a fat person in a maxi dress is a "joke" will also find anything that person wears a "joke". So I'm gonna rock my maxi dress and look fabulous, and fat-haters can shove their curly kale up their arses for all I care.

CrazyDuchess · 06/05/2016 15:17

Haha I look pretty good in a maxi too!!!

SuperFlyHigh · 06/05/2016 15:18

Crazy I find ageing personally down to genes, me and my white parents on both sides look young and age well with not much wrinkling. However my nana always wore hat and sun protection in sun and my mum the same. My nana had amazing almost wrinkle free skin up to 90. We all look 10-15-20 years younger - me more 30s rather than 44. Good diet and skin protection in our cases.

pinkdelight · 06/05/2016 15:20

The thigh rubbing is the worst, I agree. It's the downside of the dresses - at my nadir, I've ended up wearing DH's boxer shorts underneath! I'm totally not speaking for anyone else, as others cope much better in the heat and have way more style, but for myself, my best set-up is redolent of Homer Simpson in his 'fat guy dress': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King-Size_Homer#/media/File:King-Size_Homer.png

ElspethFlashman · 06/05/2016 15:21

Maxi dresses are a gift from the gods if you find one with a thick enough waist band so you don't look pregnant.

Too many of them basically billow out straight under the bust. You need to try on about 10 of them to find one that falls flattish in the front from a wide flat band but doesn't cling.

Then never take it off

AlbusPercival · 06/05/2016 15:22

Im a size 26 and pregnant.

I love summer, so much time when it is light to be outside.

I wear mini dresses, midi dresses and maxi dresses, whatever I fancy

emmaluvseeyore · 06/05/2016 15:23

Two things I thoroughly recommend for the summer (I'm a size 20 but was a 26 last summer):

  1. Lanacane anti-chafing gel. This stuff is amazing! I put it on my inner thighs every day during the summer to stop chafing. It is also really good at healing any chafing you've already got.
  2. Comfort shorts. I was able to wear a dress to a wedding a couple of summers ago without needing leggings or tights underneath.
I'd also recommend getting a traditional style fan. I got one when I went to Japan a few years ago, and it was so useful for keeping cool.
heron98 · 06/05/2016 15:23

Move to Yorkshire.

It's never hot here.

Problem solved.

Katedotness1963 · 06/05/2016 15:23

Before I nip upstairs to burn the maxi dress it's taken me ages to feel okay about wearing...

I hate the summer. I hate trying to find flattering clothes. I hate being hot and sweaty. I hate leaving a wet spot when I stand up thanks to sweaty thighs. And I really hate looking around and seeming to be the only person affected by the heat!

ElspethFlashman · 06/05/2016 15:25

I have a rather funky friend who spends each summer dressed entirely in ASOS Curve. She always looks really trendy. She's always getting asked where she got things.

Mov1ngOn · 06/05/2016 15:26

How horrid tigger. I suspect you'd laugh at me in anything I wore as I'm larger. I couldn't wear a lot of what slim folk wear but a maxi dress is comfortable and covers up. I don't want to be wearing leggings under dresses all summer.

What a truly horrid poster.

GarlicShake · 06/05/2016 15:27

There are types of big women who look glorious in big dresses! I've always envied them, whether I was fat or thin. You know, African matriarchs and mystical types with big, flowing hair to match. They have huge personalities and wear big dresses in strong colours :)

Alternatively there's a pretty good choice of trousery things to wear.

If you like shiny, you could look at shalwar kameez or lehenga choli. There's also the Downton dowager look: it works well with a bosom and jewels.

Have fun! As the saying goes, you get a bikini body by putting a bikini on your body (maybe not for a wedding, though, eh.)

TheDuchessOfArbroathsHat · 06/05/2016 15:27

Tigger did you mean to come across as a Grade A FashionBitch? Very rude indeed and your perception of how someone might look in something to you is of no relevance to the OP or indeed to anyone who might already be having a crisis of confidence. Shitty posting.

randomcatname · 06/05/2016 15:28

Another one here who thinks larger people can look great in a maxi dress. In fact, I was under the impression that it is we short arses who can't get away with them.

Although...where wtf you like, obviously.

Delighted to hear lanacane anti chafe makes a good facial primer. Bought some last year but it remains unopen as summer never made it to Scotland.

CrazyDuchess · 06/05/2016 15:28

Super - I wasn't implying that it was because I was black - I was asked a question and gave my experience and my mother?? Confused

Genetics has a huge part to play but it is also true the higher melanonin (sp) levels protect the skin from wrinkles and ageing.

Sorry OP for the derail xx I hate being fat in hot weather

witsender · 06/05/2016 15:28

Well, I can genuinely say that I consider myself and most people I know to be quite normal, and have never seen 'looks' following a larger lady in a maxi dress. In fact, I think it can be a very elegant look.

And to be honest, I would care very little for the approval of someone who finds those sentiments A) accurate and B) suitable for airing on a thread like this.

The80sweregreat · 06/05/2016 15:31

Kate, the beauty of MN is others on here are affected by heat too. we are not alone!
( summer bbq smells are also rank)

Plattertudes · 06/05/2016 15:36

I am tall and a size 20, whilst shopping for any dress that would fit (waist is usually under the bust!) my DH in a nice way said actually you look like a sofa in that!!

After I recovered and thought about it, the problem with maxi dresses is that they are often in nylon type fabrics with heavy patterns on them. If you can find a plain dress in cotton they look much nicer and colourful jewellery can be added.

I sympathise as being overlarge AND overtall means finding anything to fit is really difficult.

Last year I found some lovely crop trousers in East and teamed them with huge linen Shirts (also East) they were really comfortable. (Just remembered the trousers were actually ankle grazers, but on me they were crops!)

TheoriginalLEM · 06/05/2016 15:40

Im a proper lard arse - summer is my favourite time of year. Dont like how i look? get to fuck :)

ICanSeeForMiles · 06/05/2016 15:41

I'm not especially fat (about a 12) but by god I hate summer. I sweat like fuck and hate trying to put together summer outfits with a big sweaty red face

I'm much more at home in the autumn wearing skinny jeans and my lovely boots Smile
