To think summer is a miserable time for fat people?

HackerFucker22 · 06/05/2016 14:31

Caveat by saying immediately I am a good 2st (actually closer to 3st!!) overweight so this isn't a fat bashing thread.

First few proper sunny days and I am frantically trying to find weather appropriate clothes that don't make me look like a whale.

I am hot and sweaty

I am stressed as I have 3 weddings need 2 outfits and I can't find a damn thing.

I went out to buy some new tops today and came back with baggy, shapeless t-shirts.

I am dreading the next few months.

YY to polyester! I'm seriously thinking about getting the sewing machine out again just to make some nice thin cotton stuff. But it's such a faff, especially with an 11mo in tow Sad

Adnerb95 · 09/05/2016 14:59

I bought (really cheap, really thin cotton) pyjama bottoms in plain colour in Tescos. Brilliant under tunics in hot weather. No rubbing, kept cool and quite stylish, though I say so myself.

emma181 · 09/05/2016 15:13

Big people come in all shapes and sizes so different things will suit different people, all I can do is give give an example of myself and hope it helps.

I'm currently around 4 stone overweight and carry a lot around my stomach, so struggle to find things that suit my shape, but as I've been blessed with a decent sized bosom I go for tops that taper in under the bust and are loose around the tummy. Obviously I'll never look thin, but it's what compliments my shape best.

I really can't understand why some women feel the need to wear very tight fitting clothes when there's a lot going on in there, BBWs are beautiful but every nook and cranny should not be on show.

Me too - I've found a lovely dress pattern, just need the time/energy.

It's really hard to find dresses that are below knee, but not maxi, and with some sleeves (even just short ones to cover top of arms). But I found a great pattern and will give it a go - I reckon 3 of these in cotton/silk or linen would be great. wardrobebyme.com/products/curvy-akinori-kimono-dress-size-14-24_44-54?variant=9946653317

That looks like a great pattern for a summer dress.

I got a couple of GAP dresses last year that are cotton and loose fitting and have shoulders. So much more comfey than tight strappy vest tops in the heat.

Smooshface · 09/05/2016 16:17

I have 2 weddings this summer, so joined slimming world last week. Sick of being so heavy now, I was 3 stone lighter when i got pregnant with dc2, want to be back there again

SeasonalVag · 09/05/2016 16:59

Remember getting on the tube with my boss for a meeting. He was visibly worried about me, but I carried my size ok so it never occurred to me it was that....when we got off, I was shocked to see my face beetroot red....thanks to me polyester Evans suit, I was literally slippery but was so used to it, had no idea.

scrappydappydoo · 09/05/2016 17:31

Ah my thread - I look and feel hot and horrendous in everything. Size 18/20 with large boobs, huge arse, thunder thighs and very large calves. I have very pale skin that goes bright red at the merest hint of sun.I look ridiculous in dresses. I end up looking like a 60 yr old granny in cropped trousers with elasticated waist and long t-shirts as that's the only that is comfortable :(

coco1810 · 09/05/2016 17:46

I agree, I have put on two stone because of a problem with my feet. It has certainly given me the motivation to do something about it!

shamelessmailhack · 09/05/2016 17:49

It's so easy to pile on weight when you're immobile. My problems started when pregnant. Because I had SPD I could barely walk, and was in pain for months afterward. I've just never got back to my pre pregnancy fitness level and can't seem to shed the weight. It's grim.

oldlaundbooth · 09/05/2016 17:53

' a thin cotton tee shirt that has a deep v neck and sleeves that finish just above the elbow.'

Oh yes, Field!

Where are these t-shirts?

Nowhere, that's where.

scampimom · 09/05/2016 17:57

Apparently, the 90s are going to be massive in SS16, so this means you can wear one of those little white t-shirts under your strappy dress. Covers a bit of the upper arm (WHY is everything sleeveless??), covers your boobs and shoulders, stops you getting sunburnt AND is fashion-forward.

GOing to be looking into body glide and bandalettes, though - don't want to spend the whole summer sweltering in black leggings or grating my own legs to ribbons.

BettySpaghettiHasLostHerHead · 09/05/2016 18:24

Callaird so sorry about your boyfriend Sad

Agree with the sleeves issue. Wtf is the reason for every summer dress in the whole world having no sleeves. I have the worst bingo wings ever and really struggle to find anything acceptable (to me) to wear in the summer.

princessconsuelabannahammock · 09/05/2016 18:26

I am a big chubba but have been inspired by this thread to try a maxi dress. I have ordered 2 from the links on here. A couple of years ago i bought the evans comfort shorts - recommended by MN and now i can finally wear skirts. I am not sure they will suit but love the idea of being cool and floaty and not just wearing less layers of my usual winter outfit and sweating my arse off. The ONLY good thing about getting older is giving far less of a shit about what other people think.

AuntDotsie · 09/05/2016 19:10

HisNameWasPrince - that's a lovely pattern! Will have to have a poke about that site.

In the meantime, Yours have a decent range of midi dresses you might like.

liberatedwine · 09/05/2016 19:33

I carry a can of icy water spray around with me, £1 from Home and Bargain, highly recommended, spray it on your wrists and back of neck, and it's like diving into a swimming pool (whilst on the tube) Grin

People should wear what they damn well like, whatever their bodyshape. Dress to please yourself!

I love the sunshine and can't bear to be uncomfortable, and tend to go for a loose floaty shirt over a vest (with built in bra) and cropped linen trousers, and I don't give a shit if pathetic people watchers are judging me.

And fuck it, if I want to wear a maxi dress, I damn well will and side-eye me all you like, I won't be sobbing into my gin and tonic tonight, because some random people on the internet think it's wrong.

icy121 · 09/05/2016 19:53

So glad this isn't a fat bashing thread. I'm not overweight, but hormones are so fucked from fertility treatment I'm in a perma hot flush. Bought a desk fan for the office which is amazing when there's shit a/c.

Thin cotton underclothes sound amazing to sweat into!! Might try some in bed 😅😅

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 09/05/2016 19:56

I still have my 90s strappy dress, can just fit in it.....it used to be loose, is a bit tighter now but still looks good.. And it's a maxi dress!!!! Grin

LoveYouAndHugYouAndSqueezeYou · 09/05/2016 22:55

I cut tights off at the knee to wear like shorts under skirts and dresses to fight the chub rub. They're essentially free cos you can just use any old laddered tights that you would have otherwise thrown away Smile

joseyjo79 · 10/05/2016 01:57

@Loveyouandhugyou, I do exactly the same thing! I have a drawer full of tights I've cut into shorts to wear under skirts in the summer! I've always had thigh rub even when I was 16 and an 8/10 it's just how I'm built. And I'm hot all the time, not just in the summer. My office attire all year round is summer wear (I got a lot of funny looks) and am constantly hot. I spend most of my summer in shorts, even at work I have tailored ones, as I look terrible in maxi dresses. But then so does my teeny tiny size 8 sister!!

I say, wear what you're comfortable in and ignore the haters. After all if they were as hot as I feel most of the time they'd understand the pain! 😫

Baconyum · 10/05/2016 03:37

Loving this thread (mostly), I am so going to cake watchers tomorrow!

I'm 5'3" size 18-20, 38dd tits, aged 43, skin has 2 tones - Celtic white or sunburnt red (if I'm stupid!), red hair. I have scars stretch marks and spots (why doesn't anyone mention menopausal acne?!).

I wear what I bloody well like and what fits and is comfortable. Maxi dress I'm wearing today from an independant shop in Glasgow similar to this

www.amazon.co.uk/G2-Chic-Printed-DRS-MAX-FCHA2-L/dp/B00SLXWC4K/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1462845805&sr=8-13&keywords=maxi+dress+pink+ethnic

Wore it for my hobby, always get compliments when I wear it. I'm cool ish (more menopausal crap) and comfy.

I did Scottish slimmers for 3 years trying to be slim for 40, unsuccessful. I like my food, I like my social life, come 40 I had an epiphany.

Always worried too much what others even strangers think... Now? Fuck em! I wear, eat, drink, live how I want. Funnily enough that helped my depression more than the pills!

Don't like how I look ? Tough. Don't think I should wear x y z? Tough, I'm not forcing you to look, not going round nude offending folk.

Ever since I've had that confidence I've had people ask if I've lost weight, met a new partner etc. Nope just not taking shots about such things anymore!

Baconyum · 10/05/2016 03:38

Shots? Confused shite

Hippywannabe · 10/05/2016 06:51

Liking the idea of cut down tights!

liberatedwine · 10/05/2016 08:16

Baconyum Glad your depression has eased Flowers

Some people pay too much heed to what others think about them. Unless it's a close friend or family member, their opinions don't count. And none of my friends and family are rude enough to make unkind comments about what anyone is wearing! It says more about the person commenting, than the person being remarked upon.

Dunno about anyone else, but summer has departed here, and we're back to overcast and not particularly warm weather.

Baconyum · 10/05/2016 08:18

Thanks its not gone but is better.

Afraid to say family were among the worst!
