To think summer is a miserable time for fat people?

HackerFucker22 · 06/05/2016 14:31

Caveat by saying immediately I am a good 2st (actually closer to 3st!!) overweight so this isn't a fat bashing thread.

First few proper sunny days and I am frantically trying to find weather appropriate clothes that don't make me look like a whale.

I am hot and sweaty

I am stressed as I have 3 weddings need 2 outfits and I can't find a damn thing.

I went out to buy some new tops today and came back with baggy, shapeless t-shirts.

I am dreading the next few months.

Nothing to add apart from - thanks for starting this OP - another reason I love being able to turn to MN, finding I am not alone.

archedeyebrow.com/ is a good blog for plus size fashion. She manages to look very stylish.

fullerfigurefullerbust.com/ is also handy for tips on bigger clothes.

There are loads of big fashion blogs but I like those two as they are UK based so you can actually buy the clothes without a two week shipping wait.

missisbluesky · 07/05/2016 19:07

Personally I think they look crap on skinny people. I think the healthier women suits them better.

How disgusting to insinuate that slim women are unhealthy.

Yes. Last summer I couldn't fit into my favourite linen trousers & I felt miserable & ashamed. I went to Slimming World & have lost 2 stone & just had the same trousers taken in by inches. I don't feel I look any different - I'm pretty tall - but I feel comfortable in my own skin, finally, for the first time in years.

MintJulip · 07/05/2016 19:19

Mint I know, and then do all the hard work to lose it and put it on again. It's properly insane when you think about it. I love being thin, it's amazing! But for some reason I just love food too much

I know so much more about myself and food now, than when I lost weight in the past.

I really feel If I can loose it again, ( I have never had so much weight to loose and have never struggled for so many years trying to loose it) I can keep it off.

I know I can fast really easily now. I know about 5:2 and low carb....and I know how much I can push myself in excersise. I also have the added help of medication too.

Callaird · 07/05/2016 19:42

I'm clinically obese, I love the summer and have got to the stage where I just don't care what people think of me.

I hate myself for being over weight but I have friends who like me for who I am and never judge and anyone who does judge has nothing better to do with their life! I'm pretty damn sure that I could find something to judge them about but cannot be bothered to waste the energy!

Wear what you want, put on a smile and don't hear the judgy comments!

(I started to pile on the weight when my boyfriend died, although I was always 'chubby'. I really cannot summon up the motivation or will power to even try to lose weight, even though I say every Sunday night, tomorrow my life begins again (I don't want a new life, I just want my old one back!))

AuroraBora · 07/05/2016 19:43

I'm not plus size but hate feeling sticky too Sad I'm getting increasingly frustrated that the shops are full of scratchy, cheap-but-overpriced polyester.

I've made it my mission this year to only buy natural fabrics and I'm hoping that'll make a difference to my sweatiness!

fishybits · 07/05/2016 19:51

Sandy Andy according to the website they're 7% lycra.

All I know is that they are soft, unrestrictive, don't make me sweat and let me wear a skirt.

I do wear knickers underneath them and found the "shorts" length long enough. The knee length ones show if you have a split in a knee length skirt.

I'm a size 20 now but even as a size 8, I still had bloody chub rub and absolutely nothing else works reliably enough for long enough and I never, ever want to have blisters the size of 50 pence pieces between my thighs again. Worse than childbirth almost

hazeyjane · 07/05/2016 19:52

Missis - fat people can be unhealthy, slim people can be unhealthy.

This thread is a really friendly good natured non judgemental whinge about not knowing what to wear when it is hot - whether fat, thin or anything in between. The only thing that marring it, like a little drop of poison, are a couple of posters, including you - I don't know why, it is a very sour thing to do.

Anyway, as I say, on the whole this thread is great - thankyou the rest of you!

SandyAndy · 07/05/2016 21:30

Thanks for that info fishy I have ordered a 3 pack, they're not cheap are they, but I don't mind if it helps.
Also, today we did a BBQ for MILs birthday, and I got so hot in my jeans I went and put on my........
MAXI DRESS!Grin Boy was it floaty and comfy, and looked good too if I say so myself!
Just need those shorts to arrive now, so I can float around minus the chub rubSmile

SandyAndy · 07/05/2016 21:36

Also, what hazeyjane said Smile

ladymariner · 07/05/2016 23:22

Bought a gorgeous maxi dress in Wallis today.....just saying!!! Grin

I finally lost enough weight last summer to brave showing my arms and calves. Normally I'm so crippled with self loathing and low self esteem that I would be miserable all summer, but I was eating healthily and exercising and enjoying my life enough to get down to a dress size 12. I'm 5'7 and an hour glass with a biggish bust and I felt great Grin

Then I got pregnant in July and am Being induced tomorrow so will be nice and fat again for this heatwave Sad I have put three stone on with this pregnancy and am really sad to think that this is another summer that I will be sweaty and ashamed.

FourForYouGlenCoco · 08/05/2016 09:09

Have read this whole thread over the last couple of days and it makes me so sad to think that people aren't wearing what they want for fear of being judged! Please, please just put on whatever makes you feel comfortable and happy, and forget what anyone thinks - especially people who are clearly judgy shitbags anyway! The vast majority of people are too busy worrying about what they look like to worry about anyone else - I'm slim & I have never judged anyone on their clothes - am always too busy fretting about my self harm scars (arms are covered in em!) and hoping no one judges me! It took me years and years to wear short sleeves. Everyone has things they don't like about themselves, but life really is too short to let it stop you living and enjoying yourself.

Back to the topic - I normally love summer, the hotter the better, but am currently 28w pregnant and boy am I feeling it! All my normal lovely cool summer clothes are packed away and I'm struggling not to melt. Seen people mentioning harem pants which sound like an AMAZING idea - where can I get some?!
I don't think heat tolerance is just down to weight either, as evidenced by the many skinny people on this thread who can't stand summer. My 3yo DD is a hot dog and always has been. Last few days she's been a miserable little wotsit and permanently bright red and sweaty. She keeps moaning that it's too hot - don't think summer is going to be her favourite season!

sportinguista · 08/05/2016 09:22

Not massive but bigger than I should be, especially being a shortie. I'm not too bad in the heat. I tend to put calf length leggings or cycling shorts underneath dresses. I also live in vintage style sundresses, which I find suit fuller figures way better than some modern styles. I personally cannot wear maxi dresses as they all seem to be way too long for me (5') and they seem to balloon out. I wear skater style skirts which with leggings or shorts keep me nice and cool with a good airflow up round the nether regions! Grin. I am desparately tryijng to shift half a stone before we go on holiday (6 weeks) but not sure I'll manage!

It's not so much to do with weight in terms of heat tolerance but the individual, for example I've suffered with heat bumps on my ankles and wrists since I was a child and very slim. DH is from a hot climate so actively loves the sun but does get very sweaty and he is super slim. DS seems to cope fine and has inherited none of my intolerance to high heat.

Wetbankhols · 08/05/2016 09:53

AIBU to tell you I've actually managed to stick to a diet?! Shock

ok, it's for four days, but that's four days more than I've managed since 2014

AllThingsNautical · 08/05/2016 11:36

Twll, don't be ashamed of your body this summer when it has produced a lovely baby! Be proud of what it's achieved, get some comfortable and cool clothes and enjoy the nice weather with your scrumptious newborn Flowers.

MissOpheliaBalls · 08/05/2016 12:44

Twll please don't be ashamed about your weight. You've just had a baby, be proud that you're up and dressed ! The year I had my first child, the fashion was leggings and big tshirts. My bum could have been mistaken for one of Jupiter's moons and my legs (not my best feature) looked like those smoked hams hanging in the butchers ! When I was pregnant, my Mum made me a tartan 'frock' with Peter Pan collar - it was my 'smart' outfit until on an outing to a local hotel, an old bloke 'whispered' to his companion after I passed - "Well there's a ship in full sail". I could have died !

I know how difficult it is loosing weight and keeping it off - I've been a size 20 to a size 10; I've finally in the last few years decided that I'm going to like myself as I am - life is just too damn short - and unbelievably my weight has stablised. I'm a size 14. I'm going to wear a bikini this year because I really don't care if you think I'm fat or not !! Grin

sleepwhenidie · 08/05/2016 13:10

Take a look at 'I heart my body' Facebook page, there's a great video posted the other day about summer dressing.

Nadia Abouhlson also worth checking out

Sorry, that link isn't to Nadia A...this one is

superwormissuperstrong · 08/05/2016 13:44

Sides in and waves hello - some fab ideas here.
I have a different problem in the heat and not sure if there are any solutions. Normally I have nice feet and ankles and look nice in sandals or flip flops but when the weather gets hot they become ugly swollen cankles. At night I sleep with them raised on pillows, give them a bit of an upward massage and that helps them subside but is there anything else - particularly so I can have a nice ankle on the odd occasion I want to be out in the evening?

FurryDogMother · 08/05/2016 14:48

I used to suffer from chub rub back in the 70s - and the only thing I could find at the time which helped was talc! I still remember the misery of it - but the funny thing is, although I weighed about 3 stone less back then, my thighs no longer rub - maybe they've just sagged enough not to!

I deal with summer by wearing sleeveless tunics over either thin cotton shirts and a maxi (oh noes!) skirt, or over a maxi (oh the horror!) dress - I have 6 cheap jersey ones with 3/4 sleeves I bought from Amazon a while back, in different colours. The sleeveless tunics also work with leggings of all lengths, and shorter skirts. My favourite is the C64 from Caroline Ann (available on both Amazon and eBay). I've had mine for 3 years now (have 4 of them in black, grey, brown and a navy with flowers on it) and they're just so easy to wear. I don't have a waist to emphasise, so I just hide it :)

The older I get, the less I give a toss what other people think of the way I dress - I'm currently rocking a kind of Steampunk/Goth mashup style - at almost 57 :) If people don't like it, sod 'em, they don't have to wear it!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 08/05/2016 18:06

I just got someof these trousers in next

They may not be the most fashion forward thing ever but I think they look ok, they're cool and comfy.
