To ask you to arbitrate on a dispute about laundry etiquette?

So, dh and I disagree. He is clearly wrong but thought I should put it to the Mumsnet jury because I'm putting off doing bedtime

So, you live in a house where the adult children wash their own clothes and one adult (for the sake of argument we'll call this adult Mrs Overall) is responsible for washing everything else that is in the laundry box including kids clothes and towels. Mrs O hangs out, sorts and folds and Mr Overall does putting away, leaving a pile for adult children of anything that has worked its way into the shared laundry box by mistake.

If you got up just before 10 after the school run and saw there was an open washing machine with about 4 unwashed items inside would you

a) Take no notice
b) Add your own items to the laundry and put it on running a half load
c) Ask the only adult in the house if they had finished with the machine because you want to do some laundry
d) Assume someone is using the machine and come back later if you want to do some washing yourself.

Just to reiterate dh is wrong. Some details have been changed to protect the feckless

If having asked the person they had nothing else to add then I would top it up and do a full load of my stuff and any general house bits.

E. Grab a bat as no one else in my house uses the washing machine so I'd assume I had an intruder.

I'd take it out and do my own washing.

Depends if the things in the machine match the load I want to put on. Lights, darks, delicates, or hot wash. If it does, I'd include them in the wash.

B or C, I suppose. C, really, if the owner of the clothes was within shouting distance.

(But then, an old flatmate once tore strips off me for taking her clean washing out of the machine so I could put on a load of my own . So my laundry etiquette may be sub-par.)

To drip some info be clear the four items in the machine are a pair of rinsed weed on kids pyjamas, a child's fleece and a pair of kids pants. The last two items are dry and have been placed on top of the rinse PJs.

The door has been left wide open. The door is never wide open due to the space being restricted.

If i had washing to do and it matches what was in the machine i'd chuck mine in and wash it. If it didnt match mine i'd ask the owner if they minded if i used the machine for a full load. If i had no washing i'd take no notice.

I'd do combo of C and B- C if the other person is in,
B if they are out and the stuff in the washer is the same load type that I'm just about to put on.

Gosh, I have no idea. I might do anyone one of those things, depending on the current laundry situation.
