To be annoyed DH knows nothing about female anatomy

DH, to whom I've been married for 15 years, and with whom I've had 3 children, was astonished yesterday when I pointed out that a vulva includes 2 holes. I had to show him a diagram.

Aibu to find this really annoying? I mean I had noticed I did all the childbearing work but he clearly didn't bother to look at a single book or website about pregnancy or even pay attention in all those birth classes. I am still cross.

My DP though that women do a 'period wee' and asked how many I had had, as I mentioned I was having a bad time of the month and kept leaking. He must have thought I was wetting myself! Confused

buckingfrolicks · 01/05/2016 23:24

I too am aghast that women don't know this. How can we expect men to know in that case? But it speaks volumes about our education system to be honest that in a supposedly civilised nation so many women are so out of touch with their own bodies.

LovelyLungtch · 01/05/2016 23:24

If lots of women don't know something as basic as this, what the hell else don't people know?? I'm not a particularly smart person but good grief.

cleaty · 01/05/2016 23:27

I did O level biology, I do not remember covering this. Although it may be now.

DeadGood · 01/05/2016 23:28

Just... Wow

LovelyLungtch · 01/05/2016 23:28

Ok yes shatners I think you have it - the sensation of weeing must be vastly different for different people, so it doesn't necessarily feel like a seperate hole. So therefore, if you never really think about things like that, an assumption is made that it all comes from the same place. That makes sense.

NameChangeMum456 · 01/05/2016 23:29

Totally found all the different places myself without biology lessons, I like to explore, plus I checked it out a lot when I was having piercings done way back when. Plus I have bladder issues and have been catheterized and cystoscoped so you sort of learn it then whether you want to or not.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:30

why are people being so arsey to those who didn't know? I'm sure we all have in depth knowledge about stuff that others don't.

LovelyLungtch · 01/05/2016 23:30

But why would you need O level biology to know what happens when you go to the loo?!

NinaSimoneful · 01/05/2016 23:30

I still don't know who is telling us not to pee after sex.

sykadelic · 01/05/2016 23:32

I have no idea how I knew this, doubt it was biology class or exploration. I think it's just one of those things that some people "know".

However, like most things in life, unless it's something you actually think about it's understandable that some people might not know. The excuse "surely you know about your own bodies" argument only stands if you know everything about the human body (that food moves by peristalsis, the purpose of the uvula, how many teeth you have, the blood brain barrier, muscle groups, number of bones in the body, etc etc) and I highly doubt that the majority of lay people do.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:32

Peeing/periods etc are just things that happen - I am all for learning new stuff but how my body works is of no particular interest to me.

NinaSimoneful · 01/05/2016 23:35

YvaineStormhold Who is it that's telling us to wee after sex??!

Sallystyle · 01/05/2016 23:36

I cant feel any difference between where my pee and where my period comes out of. I know my anatomy but I can't feel the difference.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:39

Now I think about it I don't actually feel anything when my period comes out

Ickythumpsmum · 01/05/2016 23:40

Cunty don't know if you're still checking the thread, but your keyboard diagram is brilliant. Made my night Wink
I can feel that pee comes out a different hole, but I don't think people are thick not to know otherwise.

Pootle40 · 01/05/2016 23:41

OMG. I can't believe it. They feel as different as doing a poo.

Sallystyle · 01/05/2016 23:45

No they really don't pootle not to me and I've known my anatomy for a very long time. It feels exactly the same to me.

Smidge001 · 01/05/2016 23:45

Nina you're supposed to wee (before and) after sex to reduce chance of cystitis. I think fairly common knowledge? Just google how to reduce risk of cystitis and I think you'll find it's recommended by most medical professionals.

kickassangel · 01/05/2016 23:46

Whenever you look at a diagram about that part of a woman's body it clearly shows the different holes.

Times you may have seen such a digram: biology lessons, tampon leaflet, health leaflet about cystitis, pregnancy book etc.

Plus, well, yes, it definitely feels like an obviously different place to me.

I can see how someone may not have noticed/thought about it, but it seems that a certain amount of willfully not paying attention, e.g. not listening in school, must have taken place.

Tessabelle74 · 01/05/2016 23:47

If he knows where the "best bit" is down there I'd laugh it off but if he's unaware of that either I'd be signing him up for a gcse in biologyShock

SovietKitsch · 01/05/2016 23:49

HOW?! Could a woman not know she had three holes?!! I knew, quite literally, by the time I was about three - cos my mum told me. I am bamboozled by the idea you could get to adult hood without realising Confused

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:50

kickass

Lack of listening/interest in biology
Don't use tampons
Never had cystitis
Never given birth

Like most school kids I only paid attention to what subjects interested me. Biology wasn't one of them.

SilverBirchWithout · 01/05/2016 23:50

Nina it's something that you are advised (by Drs, self-help leaflets, other women) if you are prone to cystitis.

InspRemorse · 01/05/2016 23:51

The use of the word cross on mumsnet really really makes me cringe.

To be fair I think you're getting pissy over nothing, if he was shit hot about how vaginas work no doubt you'd all be branding him a pervert.
