To be annoyed DH knows nothing about female anatomy

DH, to whom I've been married for 15 years, and with whom I've had 3 children, was astonished yesterday when I pointed out that a vulva includes 2 holes. I had to show him a diagram.

Aibu to find this really annoying? I mean I had noticed I did all the childbearing work but he clearly didn't bother to look at a single book or website about pregnancy or even pay attention in all those birth classes. I am still cross.

OP posts:

I have been teaching 7yo dd about the 3 holes, and also mentioned to my boys. I am going to check if dh knows now!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/05/2016 22:57

I knew this from biology but I understand why you might not know - that bit of biology can be embarrassing so it seems to be the bit that sinks in least. I'm 25 and I've never had cystitis or read a tampon booklet (I just worked it out myself, I think) and I've never say on the toilet and thought "Where does it feel like this pee is coming from?".

I guess it's one of those things that you don't know that you don't know. And I'd imagine that if you skipped the bit about where women pee from, you probably didn't pay too much attention to the bit about where the womb/bladder/kidneys are etc.

AdoraBell · 01/05/2016 22:58

Can't remember how old I was when I discovered this but it wasn't in my human biology classes at school. I was quite young, probably had a light bulb moment when I started using tampons, so mid teens?

As others have said OP the sexist attitude needs more tackling than ignorance about this aspect of anatomy.

When DDs were about 7 or 8 one of them asked me if a baby comes out of the vigina or the bum Grin

SilverBirchWithout · 01/05/2016 22:59

But surely when you pee you can feel it's not coming out of your vagina?

LondonStill83 · 01/05/2016 23:00

I didn't realize until I was about 26 and was told by a friend, who was equally shocked! Who knew?

LondonStill83 · 01/05/2016 23:01

Just has DH, he seemed to know.

"Two parts, isn't it? The sex part and the wee part?"

Had to agree.

Nickname No I haven't had children

I can honestly say I had never thought about it.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:02

I really don't think about where my piss comes from when I am on the toilet Grin

LovelyLungtch · 01/05/2016 23:03

These replies are the most astonishing thing i think I've ever read, anywhere. How can any NT woman think that wee is coming out of her vagina??! It's like thinking you can hear through your eyes!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:03

I had biology lessons at school but tbf if they taught us this, I wasn't listening!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:04

I didn't think I peed out of my vagina. I had never given it any thought!

SoupDragon · 01/05/2016 23:07

I take it you have never had children either?

Why would that make a difference? I don't recal urinating being covered during antenatal classes.

LouBlue1507 · 01/05/2016 23:08

Does it really matter? YABVU to get annoyed over something so pathetic!

228agreenend · 01/05/2016 23:08

I'm in the stupid camp as well, as I remember being quite surprised when I realised.

whois · 01/05/2016 23:09

I don't think you can blame him for not knowing something that a lot of women don't know!

If a woman thinks that she pisses out of her vagina, that's just crazy. Really, really, really stupid. How would you not know that about your own body???

228agreenend · 01/05/2016 23:10

I think in thought there were two holes, vagina and wee/pooh hole. Never did o-level biology. Also, never really thought about it that deeply.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:12

Nice. We have moved from stupid to really, really stupid Hmm

LovelyLungtch · 01/05/2016 23:15

Urinating wouldn't be covered in antenatal classes, it's got nothing to do with reproduction!! It's a different bodily system altogether!

SilverBirchWithout · 01/05/2016 23:16

A wee and poo hole is even worse. Have people not got any sensations or nerve endings 'down below' at all?
I do hope people know they have a clitoris?

NinaSimoneful · 01/05/2016 23:17

I still don't know who is telling us not to have sex?

LovelyLungtch · 01/05/2016 23:18

I'm laughing at the thought that you need O level biology to know this. Have you never looked at your own bodies? You know when you gush a bit when on your period, do you think that that feels like it's coming from the same place as wee does? It feels completely separate and different to me.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/05/2016 23:21

No of course not - we are thick aren't we Hmm

I did biology for one year at school. We may have covered it, we may not - I generally wasn't paying any attention as I hated science.

And I have never had any reason to give it any thought.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 01/05/2016 23:22

I've never had children but I've known since I was about 13 years old that I have a vagina and a urethra and they're not the same 'hole'. Hmm
Let's drop the assumption that women without children are ignorant.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/05/2016 23:23

I think it's quite clear that the sensation of urination isn't the same for everyone. Some women quite clearly can't detect the exact position of the outlet. If they were also never taught about the position of the urethra in relation to the vagina, it's understandable that they might have had a gap in their knowledge. That doesn't make them stupid.

It's interesting, but certainly not outrageous.
