To be annoyed DH knows nothing about female anatomy

DH, to whom I've been married for 15 years, and with whom I've had 3 children, was astonished yesterday when I pointed out that a vulva includes 2 holes. I had to show him a diagram.

Aibu to find this really annoying? I mean I had noticed I did all the childbearing work but he clearly didn't bother to look at a single book or website about pregnancy or even pay attention in all those birth classes. I am still cross.

Yes I knew to wipe front to back (guessed it was so as not to get shit in your bits) but how would that indicate there was a third hole?

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2016 00:28

"My body is going to work the same whether I am aware of every individual function or not. Therefore it isn't essential. Nor is it interesting."

I think knowing the basics about your own body is at least very useful, if not quite essential. If you have a health problem you need to know how to ask a doctor about it or read up about it and that's more difficult to do if you don't know which body part is involved.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 00:28

I knew women had a vagina.

I didn't know they didn't piss out of it.

Feel free to think I'm a troll though, won't you...

MattDillonsPants · 02/05/2016 00:29

Canyou I doubt it's about not wanting to learn but about not having the opportunity.

I certainly had no opportunity until I had children and took more interest in my anatomy.

Don't be so bloody uppity and use your imagination. Not all women are taught by their parents as kids and not all people attend good schools.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 02/05/2016 00:29

soviet. What's that go to do with anything. Hardly matters if there's one hole or two for that bit of advice?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 00:30

Matt the boys used to make flamethrowers out of the gas taps Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 00:31

Extra I wondered that but then I'm stupid apparently so of course I would

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 00:34

It was the urethra I wasn't aware of...

Quite how my posts have been interpreted to imply I didn't know I had a vagina is beyond me...

SovietKitsch · 02/05/2016 00:34

Yes latte I suppose that's fair - it wouldn't necessarily indicate that - but I suppose I'd been told wee hole, baby hole, poo hole, so it all made sense. I suppose what I can't compute, is that If you can explain it to a pre-schooler, how there an possibly be adult women who don't know.

There's bound to be something of this nature I don't know, I just don't know I don't know....Grin

MattDillonsPants · 02/05/2016 00:35

Livia Ah! Yes....happy memories! Grin Bloody awful my school. No chance to learn anything. We had one good teacher capable of engaging us all...the art teacher.

I'll never forget him and what a sanctuary his classes were.

He used to put music on....The Police or The Boomtown Rats...whatever he thought we'd like....he'd tell us who it was and then say "Now...paint a picture about this song...whatever comes into your mind!"

We loved him.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 00:35

Because nobody explained it to us as children? Is that really so difficult to get your head round?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 00:36

Matt Grin Education in the 70s and 80s was great wasn't it Grin

SovietKitsch · 02/05/2016 00:39

It would appear so! Wink

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 00:40

Some of this is really making me laugh! extrahotlatte I definitely wasn't excusing the sexism I just was thinking he might not be expected to have covered that in biology lessons where he went to school, unlike posters who were at UK school.

My point about antenatal classes was that I remember all the pictures and diagrams of uterus and cervix etc, and I remember at the time that he was confused and didn't know what we were looking at because he had never heard of a cervix and I remember explaining. I guess urethras figured in the pictures though I can't really remember. It must surely have been clear that there wasn't a bladder at the top of the vagina though!!

I personally think that husbands should make the effort to understand the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth on their wives' bodies. They don't have to do it themselves but they should find out what's going on. So I was surprised that he had derived such limited understanding.

Anyway, as I said, there are other issues of sexism, I'm not concluding he's sexist because he doesn't know about anatomy. I just wondered whether other women found this particular thing sexist.

In fact the only subjects I bothered about were Latin and Commerce because I found them relatively stress free and I was a lazy mare Grin

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 02/05/2016 00:42

Livia. I did know. I think I had a lightbulb moment when using a tampon, but without that I could well imagine getting this far without that knowledge. I agree, it's not interesting and until you need to know, it makes feck all difference to your life. When you do need to know, someone or Dr Google will tell you.

Siverbirch bMy vaginal opening & my urethra are very close and neatly tucked away (my urethra doesn't look like 'a hole' either) so no, when wiping I would never know the wee wasn't coming out of my vagina if I had that alone to go on.

There's just no need for the faux shock horror that some people didn't know this.

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 00:42

livia people get huffy and self important on threads, don't worry about it! Someone further up said they found people saying they were 'cross' on Mumsnet really annoying Confused.

Just asked my partner. He had no idea. I'd sent him to google to look it up.

Laughing quite a lot now.

Back in my day, men didn't know where to find a clitoris, so I guess there's been some progress...

SilverBirchWithout · 02/05/2016 00:44

You see I don't think children usually need it explained.

All small children are fascinated by wee and poo and where it comes out from. At some stage girls learn they have a vagina as well. Someone must have either said to these people where it is or they have discovered themselves from exploring their own bodies.

Any woman who has had a sexual experience with her vagina by touching herself or someone else touching her wil be able to feel sensations in a different place to where she wees from. You simply don't need to be told that fact in biology or by another person.

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 00:45

I also don't think you would necessarily notice the urethra opening in your own body: it's quite tiny. I would have thought you'd notice that wee comes out much further up than the vagina though.

So can anyone answer my question re tampons?

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 00:46

I am going to check with my sons what they know later. That will disgust them I'm sure Wink

MattDillonsPants · 02/05/2016 00:47

Lovely what was it? I can't find it.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 02/05/2016 00:47

I knew as quite a little kid where wee came out of because I watched it and discussed it in depth with my friends.
Was possibly a bit more surprised to find out there was another hole in the middle because initially all you need to know is you pee out of one and poo out of the other. The bit in between was just the bit in between.

But yup to me they are both totally different and quite far apart.

I think it is far less surprisingly that women's functions are separate than that men's are not, the whole wee cum same tube thing but sperm and fluid coming from separate places vas deferens and prostate thing, that is some complicated plumbing they got going on.

However for a sexually active straight dp not to know is the most surprising thing of all. What are they doing down there? Are they aware of foreplay? Have the never looked??Shock

My dp is far more au fait with my bits than I am (praise the lordGrin)
