AIBU to think that Nadia's cake was a bit pants

It just doesn't appear as professional as I was hoping for I guess. It looks wonky and the fondant icing looks badly done. I was so hoping for it to be amazing.

Because she drizzled it with orange syrup.

brandystrumpet · 22/04/2016 18:33

It looks like a stack of hat boxes rather than a cake, where's the decoration? I think they should have had another one from a top professional chef on standby.

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/04/2016 18:40

I was a little surprised at the decoration. A bit too modern and minimalist for the Queen's 90th birthday surely? But I don't get the criticism of the orange flavour and marmalade filling - sounds sufficiently interesting and delicious to me.

What makes me sad is that Nadiya went to all that bother but presumably the Queen never had any intention of eating any. I doubt the cake even went back to Windsor.

Floggingmolly · 22/04/2016 19:06

I'm sure it tasted amazing. But that wasn't really the point, was it? It was all about the appearance, and she'd probably already been advised that the Queen wouldn't be partaking. She could have decorated the cake tins themselves and gotten away with it.
If ever a situation called for style over substance, this was it...

formerbabe · 22/04/2016 19:09

I think Nadia is fab but that cake was a disappointment for me. The icing looks too amateur and the top tier is crying out for a topper of some sort...maybe some flowers or candles...

It looks sickly; too much icing I think.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 22/04/2016 23:16

What's the whole point if the queen doesn't even taste it??

green18 · 22/04/2016 23:32

Poor Nadia. What an awful pressure to be put under. It did look wonky. I bet she stressed and worried over that and the queen didn't even eat it! Waste of time.

I couldn't agree more Molly. In fact, the mind boggles as to why they chose her to make a decorated cake that won't even be eaten. Very odd.

green18 · 23/04/2016 08:42

I love the sound of orange drizzle flavour. I just hope all the minions in the back room got to tuck in.

StealthPolarBear · 23/04/2016 09:29

Yes I seriously hope it was eaten. I'd be so angry to think if a cake like that going to waste.
(Although just icing for me thanks :))

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 23/04/2016 09:44

I'm no royalist plus a bake off hata but I think getting Nadiya to do the cake was cuuuuute

I like that there's that sort of home madey vibe going on, rather than a snooty French feller doing it. With a pointy tache and a TEAM

Course someone will eat it. They'll give it to some local kiddies and have a lovely party

As for reading this thread-after some of the stuff in the PRESS about Nadiya-let alone the below the line frothers and racists-I'd be very surprised if she reads anything about herself ever

Sad
LagunaBubbles · 23/04/2016 10:05

I didn't like it, but yes I'm sure it tastes amazing - but what actually happened to it? Did anyone actually eat any? I love decorating cakes and I'm not perfect by any manner of means but I did notice the tops of the stripes weren't cut straight which is odd - using something like a pizza cutter would have solved that.

debbiedidit · 23/04/2016 10:07

It was NOT wonky. The photographer used a fisheye lens and I think it was really shitty of the daily mail to use those photos, although I'm not surprised. Angry

I would have put the gold flowers all the way round though but maybe she ran out of time.

I hope she's not a MNetter, this isn't a very nice thread.

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 23/04/2016 12:57

Actually I think people on this thread have been the opposite of mean.

And racist?

Why if someone non-white is criticised is racism levelled? I can't see how racism will ever stop if liberals keep on dragging it out on every occasion.

For my part, I can't see WHY she was picked to make a decorated cake when she's NOT a cake decorator and as a cake decorator myself I can see far more problems with its appearance than simply wonkiness.

Surely part of equality means taking criticism as well as praise without crying racist? I didn't think about her colour, although if I'd have been asked I would have known that she wasn't white I suppose despite not watching GBBO, she was all over the news. But I'd know that in the same way that I noticed she was a woman. If the cake maker was white and a non-white person said the cake was badly executed, would you call that racism Muddha? I'm asking that as a genuine question.

I didn't read a single post that I would have called racist and I believe I read them all.

I'd suggest those calling out racism at every turn are the ones with the problem.

Reebs123 · 23/04/2016 13:20

People can be so cruel especially the media. The cake was not wonky but media used that photo. People can't just say "well done" but have to have their say. She's not a professional cake decorator!

PirateSmile · 23/04/2016 13:30

Maybe weatherwax she was chosen as she's the most famous and popular cake maker in the UK at the moment? With respect, had you or any other less well known cake maker been used people could be justified in asking the question, why.

clam · 23/04/2016 13:30

My friend is not professional either, but her cakes would have knocked that one into a cocked hat. Apparently, she should have used a spirit level, and the fondant was too thin, which is why you can see the filling from the outsides.

PirateSmile · 23/04/2016 13:35

The cake wasn't wonky. If you look at the photo on Nadiya's twitter feed you'll see it was perfectly straight. The photograph was taken in such a way so as to make it appear wonky. I can only speculate why the press would want the public to think she fucked it up.

clam · 23/04/2016 13:38

Do you mean it looked straight if viewed only from the front? Surely, it needs to look straight from all angles, if it wants to avoid the label of 'wonky?'

But that wasn't the only issue. You can see the line of where the layers of filling are on the gold tier, and those vertical stripes aren't straight either. Or is that a trick of the camera too?

PirateSmile · 23/04/2016 13:40

It wasn't wonky from any angle, despite it appearing so on a photograph. Nadia did use a spirit level. It's how the photograph was taken.

clam · 23/04/2016 13:48

And the stripes? And thin fondant?

clam · 23/04/2016 13:53

If that was a weird lens, then how come the people aren't wonky too?
