AIBU to think that Nadia's cake was a bit pants

It just doesn't appear as professional as I was hoping for I guess. It looks wonky and the fondant icing looks badly done. I was so hoping for it to be amazing.

I do think the angle of the picture hasn't done it any favours. Could it just have been a wide angle lense or something.

I bet Queenie was thinking "What the fuck is this? I wanted an M&S caterpillar cake."

Agree with pp that Fances would have made a spectacular cake. Maybe they should've combined their respective talents?

Purple has always been a Royal colour, only the very wealthy could afford the dyes and so only royalty could wear purple robes etc.

I think Nadiya was always more about the flavours than the look... I think Nancy from 2014 would've made a more polished-looking cake, but she'd probably have said something blunt to Her Madge. (Probably something about the 'female royal'. )

It isn't just that it is wonky. It is that the boards between the cakes are showing. They are too thick. They also don't look as though they are resting on dowels. Which is why it is wonky. The upper layers need support.

You don't need to be a professional to know how to structure a cake properly, or how to buy the correct sized cake cards. Youtube can teach you anything. Unless it was on purpose...but then a greater separation would have looked better.

Here is the fruit cake that proved difficult. Just because you bake a cake doesn't mean you are "a decent baker". (The video is 1min20sec, its near the end.)

I like the purple, it's a very royal colour but the execution is awful. Why they didn't have Nadya bake it and someone else decorate it is beyond me. She won the great British bake off, not the great British decorate off. She can't be expected to put together a 3 tier wedding style cake, it's not easy! It was unfair for her to have been out in that position- I'm assuming someone clueless about such things asked her.

You wouldn't be able to see the dowels Liz and the boards between the cakes will be designed for that 'look'. They're just separating the tiers and adding a bit of extra height.

Each tier will be on its own thin board regardless of the dowel and spacer situation.

It looks unfinished to me.

It's actually one way you can pretty accurately identify a woman's nationality even before you've heard them speak. That and the style of their Abaya, or the way they wear it.

Oh Lordy, interested in this thread, I googled 'queens birthday cake nadia', happily looking at images of the wonky but lovely cake.

And then I stumbled on an image of some random text and all cakeyfied innocence, and it was an awful, really awful, racist vileness from some sick fucker (who is connected to UKIP it said).

I'm genuinely shocked, and I don't shock easily. The language, the ideas, the hatred.

When a lovely, gentle and talented cook is fair game for that foul and demeaning crap.

Sorry if I've interrupted the thread flow, I have deliberately been vague about it so not giving the foulness airtime/ attention. But I also wanted to say, it's not ok, and I stand right next to Nadia, against this hatred.

Sorry again, just so shocked at it all. And angry. And wanting to drown that contamination out with kind, respectful, inclusive, good natured cakery.

I hope she can avoid it.
