It just doesn't appear as professional as I was hoping for I guess. It looks wonky and the fondant icing looks badly done. I was so hoping for it to be amazing.

It didn't look very appetising mauve is such a horrible sickly colour

But marmalade cake is absolutely delicious and I am sure it tastes good

How very mean you all are, I feel saddened reading this. Let's hope Nadia doesn't use this site, she'd be gutted

And you know 'she'd be gutted', do you? Confused

She's made a cake. An very public cake for the Queen.

Just like any other adult, I'm sure she'll be aware that it will attract opinions/criticism/praise.

Unless of course you know her personally and then I take it all back.

WorraLiberty · 22/04/2016 10:33

In fact if she does use this site, she may well be more annoyed at the repeated misspelling of her name Grin Cake

KinkyAfro · 22/04/2016 10:35

If it were me Worra, I'd be gutted as I'm sure a lot of people would be. She didn't ask to do it, she was asked and she's hardly likely to say no to the Queen. Bet she wishes she had now

EponasWildDaughter · 22/04/2016 10:35

I'm not surprised she didn't try any there and then in front of the cameras.

Supposing she really didn't like it the taste? Choked on a bit? Dropped it down her dress? Found a hard bit? All media disasters.

This woman is well known for never creating any negative for the media to get hold of and she's been doing it for 70 odd years - (it's just not worth the risk for a bit of cake) - and this is how she does it: Walk slowly, sit down carefully with your knees shut, smile occasionally, nod gratefully, hand everything slowly to a royal aide, wear gloves, wear predictable pleasant clothes, don't eat or drink anything in front of the cameras and keep your hems weighted Grin

I thought the cake looked very amateur. And i would have thought Nadia wouldn't have wanted that. Odd.

EponasWildDaughter · 22/04/2016 10:37

NadiYa. Sorry Nadiya.

Stratter5 · 22/04/2016 10:39

It looks lovely. She won an amateur baking competition, she's not professionally trained. And I bet it tastes amazing, flavours were her strong point.

WorraLiberty · 22/04/2016 10:39

Fair enough but she's a professional woman. Since winning Bake Off she's become a household name and had tons of work.

None of us know her here, but I'd rather assume that she can take the criticism as well as the praise.

After all, none of it is personal. People here are talking about her work and not her as a person.

Although having said that, lots of people have said how much they like her before giving their opinion on the cake.

I'm not sure Delia or Nigella would have had the same amount of personal praise Grin

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 22/04/2016 10:42

Quite frankly I'd be gutted to have done a substandard job to start with.

Worrying about any criticism would be secondary to that.

Cleo1303 · 22/04/2016 10:48

It looks terrible. The icing looks as though she has bought the single packets of coloured ready made icing from Sainsbury's and just rolled them out. The WI ladies have come up with some stunning cakes in the past and this is such a disappointment.

Alidoll · 22/04/2016 10:54

Can't say I was all that impressed and definitely did not have any "wow" factor.

Minimilist design, fondant badly applied and just plain boring. I get it had to be easy to cut but still, would have expected it to be a little bit more "professional" looking given it was going to be seen by millions of people and discussed on forums like this lol!

gotthemoononastick · 22/04/2016 10:55

Regardless, one does not eat cake with one's eyes, ever!

I bet the sharp orangey, bitter marmaladeish, fluffy spongeiness must have tasted bloody divine! DROOL...

NoPointSoup · 22/04/2016 11:07

I know it sounds patronising, in some ways, but I think it's brilliant Nadya made a slightly wonky cake for the Queen. They could have got some amazing professional cake decorator to make something perfect, but instead they got an excellent example of a real British subject- Muslim, Mum, brilliant smiley, unassuming, lovely person doing her best! Still a million times better than most of us could do. Go Nadya!!

NickiFury · 22/04/2016 11:08

I think it looks great. It's better than I could ever do if I spent a year trying.

StealthPolarBear · 22/04/2016 11:53

Totley agree no point.

caker · 22/04/2016 11:54

I thought it looks unfinished, as if they ran out of time. It just had icing rolled over it, that's just the base layer of decorating! A missed opportunity.

AntiqueSinger · 22/04/2016 13:22

You ABU and extremely nit picky at best. She's only human. If the Queen desired a more professional cake there was hardly a dearth of professional bakers to choose from. Nadiya was selected precisely so that the Queen coulkd continue to present her 'close to the common people' image. Which she rather undone by refusing to so much as nibble it.

I'd be more critical of that.

Treeroot · 22/04/2016 13:24

Speaking generally here, but I find it a bit depressing that people from reality shows get these big jobs so easily, when people who have trained for years and work day in day out perfecting their skills get overlooked.

MadameDePompom · 22/04/2016 13:33

Pah. The cake was fine. Queenie will be offered umpteen cakes to cut over the coming days.

And I like that the cake looked a bit home made.

AnnieNoMouse · 22/04/2016 13:34

I like the cake - it looks a lot better in the Telegraph clip than it does in the first photo in this thread.

StealthPolarBear · 22/04/2016 13:38

Wouldn't someone have had to test the cake first in case the republicans had got to nadiya? Or don't they do the test thing any more?

scrumptiouscrumpets · 22/04/2016 14:22

Just like any other adult, I'm sure she'll be aware that it will attract opinions/criticism/praise.

It's pretty much impossible not to take criticism about something you've produced, be it a book, a work of art, music or a cake, to heart. You may know it's nothing about you personally, but it's still hurtful. I do think Nadiya would be hurt by the amount of people saying the cake looked awful, I don't know how anyone can say she wouldn't give a shit what people think.

Susiesoap7 · 22/04/2016 14:24

Definitely pants!!!

barleysugar · 22/04/2016 14:36

Why is it called a drizzle cake? It's filled with vanilla buttercream- surely, technically it's an orange sandwich cake? Drizzle cake is a loaf cake with citrus syrup poured on while it's hot. And not generally smothered in violet fondant.
