AIBU to think that Nadia's cake was a bit pants

It just doesn't appear as professional as I was hoping for I guess. It looks wonky and the fondant icing looks badly done. I was so hoping for it to be amazing.

In fact, the only footage I've seen of the queen ingesting anything, is of her drinking a toast.

Has anyone seen this footage of her refusing to toast Obama until the national anthem was over lol

debbiedidit · 23/04/2016 17:01

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/04/21/queen-presented-with-home-made-birthday-cake-by-bake-off-winner/

There is a video here of how it really looked.

Fisheye lenses only distort part of the photo which is why the people didn't look wonky.

WakeUpFast · 23/04/2016 17:11

The Queen is 90 years old. I don't know many 90 year olds who have a sweet tooth.

Clarkgriswoldforever · 23/04/2016 17:15

Oh no Felicity I couldn't watch that. Blush cringe. Poor Obama

FelicityR313 · 23/04/2016 17:20

Clarkgriswoldforever I know. Poor guy notices nobody else has raised their glasses and puts it down and you can see him going 'Bollocks, I've done it again' hah

PirateSmile · 23/04/2016 18:01

He really messed up the toast but the Queen appears to have done everything she could to make him feel better about it. She tells him his words are 'very kind' then races to pick up her glass the second the music stops. Perhaps this is why he likes her so much?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 23/04/2016 18:30

debbie agree re fisheye! The image is stretched. The image in the OP, showing the wonkiness, is from a 90 degree angle to the angle in the video though, showing that the cake is leaning backwards (if the 'front' is the angle in the video).
I do agree that it's nice that Nadiya was chosen to do it though, I think pretty much everyone in the country loves her! But to the PP saying none of us could do better or make their living from cakes... Speak for yourself!!!!

jollyfrenchy · 23/04/2016 19:07

Yeah, looks rubbish to me. I heard a woman interviewed on the radio who'd made cakes for the queen before and she talked about edible diamante and all sorts, sounded gorgeous. I could have made this boring cake. Stripes and dead plain icing? Yawn. The cake I made for my daughter's 8th birthday was more glamorous looking.

hollyisalovelyname · 23/04/2016 19:08

Wakeupfast you haven't met my gran so.
She'd live on clove drops and a fondant iced bread with sultanas called a fruit duck Smile

SurferJet · 23/04/2016 19:09

Bit dull looking I agree. Poor Queen.

FelicityR313 · 23/04/2016 19:11

PirateSmile - you can see her looking at the glass and thinking will I tell him to put it down or what lol.
It's a funny clip. I'm sure Obama will never make the same mistake again.
You can see Camilla and Prince Phillip trying not to laugh too.

Fwiw - I think this is a very unkind thread. Sour grapes anyone?

Nadiya has had one of the highest honours in the land as a baker, and more power to her.

StealthPolarBear · 23/04/2016 19:20

She didn't drink in that clip though did she? Just raised it, grinned and put it down then whipped up her weighted skirts and shouted "who's for the conga, bagsie leading"

FearOfFlying · 23/04/2016 19:26

My dh read me a list of the dear queenie's drinking habits last night, shared by queenie's own cousin (apparently.) I was surprised:

According to Margaret Rhodes, the Queen's cousin, HM's alcohol intake never varies. She takes a gin and Dubonnet before lunch, with a slice of lemon and a lot of ice. She will take wine with lunch and a dry Martini and a glass of champagne in the evening. That comes to 6 units per day, which would make Her Majesty a binge drinker by government standards.

Queenie's a lush. (I approve) Grin

VanessaBet · 23/04/2016 19:27

I could have made her a lovely anti-gravity cake with my new kit from Lakeland. Loads of sweeties and chocolate icing. I'm not a big fan of fondant icing and it's really hard to work with!

StealthPolarBear · 23/04/2016 19:33

That's brilliant Vanessa :o

VanessaBet · 23/04/2016 21:39

Thanks! Easy peasy though and no real skill required!

LagunaBubbles · 23/04/2016 21:52

Felicity sour grapes about what? Confused

And as to "I'd like to see anyone here do any better" comment there is a nice thread in the cake section where people have showed off their work - there are 100s of photos of cakes that I think personally are better.

iMogster · 25/04/2016 09:59

The Queen was happy that it was not fruit cake as this is difficult for her to cut. I think the cake didn't look special enough for the Queen's 90th birthday.
