Can someone explain Matthew Wright's issue with MN?

Apparently this is home to some of the "most illiterate.... harridans" online. That's the comment he's just made on this morning's show. Is it intended to be tongue in cheek and I've just not got the joke? or does he genuinely think this site is a pile of shit despite the fact that threads topics on here are often fished for topical discussion on his show.

OP posts:
kennypppppppp · 14/04/2016 22:51

is he the producer of the programme or is he told what to say though? if he gets free talking things from reading this then good luck to him.

some of the posts on here can be so rude though. i remember the rude ones as it's literally (to me) strangers being horrid to people that they don't know. which i guess is what this place and twitter can be like (i.e. opposite of facebook where your name pops up) i'm technically illiterate

I should say that I'm not the person he tweeted but someone who observed the argument at the time.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 14/04/2016 23:07

Yabu for watching - it's spring ! Get out in the fresh air and don't sweat the small stuff

herecomethepotatoes · 15/04/2016 02:10

@Janehair - that's not disablist. Do you understand what it means? Would the same message have been racist is he'd written it to an Asian?

JaneHair · 15/04/2016 07:06

I'm a disabled woman myself, as well as a parent, so yes I do know what disablist means. So don't be so bloody rude - you have no idea what my life is like. You didn't see the whole conversation or how nasty he was to us all. I've asked for that post to be removed now because of the screenshots, but I stand by my words.

herecomethepotatoes · 15/04/2016 07:14

Calm down a little Jane. If you post a screen shot that doesn't even slightly back up what you've accused someone of, you should expect to be questioned without getting so shirty.

You didn't see the whole conversation or how nasty he was to us all.

You're right and the 'evidence' you posted doesn't support your claim whatsoever.

you have no idea what my life is like

Irrelevant to this situation.

herecomethepotatoes · 15/04/2016 07:24

and having read the full conversations it seems that @mumsmissions got angry because he didn't address their point on his television show. None of the people in that twitter spat came out of it looking good.

TheNaze73 · 15/04/2016 07:26

Matthew Wright is entitled to his opinion. It was broadbrush & crass but, the OTT reaction the OP has got to this thread, kind of backs up, what he was saying

SouthWestmom · 15/04/2016 07:26

The conversation is all still there on Twitter. To be fair he does seem to become rude really quickly having not really engaged with the issue.

MattDillonsPants · 15/04/2016 07:43

Boogers

" I didn't know that about him and his wife having IVF, though it might explain, though not excuse, some of the caustic shit that spews from his mouth about parents, particularly mothers" why would you think that his having IVF has to do with him spewing caustic shit??

Justmeagain78 · 15/04/2016 07:46

I love his show - during my maternity leave it was the only thing that kept me sane - the rest of daytime tv was mindless and patronising. I'm not a fan of his presenting style - I find he talks over the callers too much and doesn't allow their views to be heard properly. He's often quite rude too. However, I still watch because I enjoy the panel discussion parts and it's a good show for keeping up to date with what's going on.

I think he's just making a joke and we shouldn't take it too seriously. He uses our threads for his show so he obviously doesn't think we are that dull. The term harridan is a bit sexist but he has had a lot of slating on here and that's how he tends to respond to criticism - quite aggressively. I have found Mumsnet comforting, reassuring, interesting and hilarious and full of intelligent discussion but I have also witnessed bullying behaviour (and bad spelling!) on here so I think if others have got a bad impression we can't be too offended.

Let's take it as the joke it is intended to be - perhaps we should all descend on his show wearing "illiterate harridan" t-shirts and show him how intelligent and articulate we all really are!

OccamsRazorSharpner · 15/04/2016 07:50

who?

MsJamieFraser · 15/04/2016 07:51

I don't know why people on here give him the time of day.

GreenishMe · 15/04/2016 07:58

He's an ineffectual little man - who cares what he says/thinks/does?

RonaldMcDonald · 15/04/2016 08:20

I like him

I think his show is the only daytime tv worth watching before The Daily Politics.

He has interesting panellists plus whomever Channel 5 lump him with and he usually treats even the worst of those with patience.

He was in a domestically abusive relationship where he was the victim and he speaks about that in a way that is helpful for other male victims. I applaud him for his honesty.

Sometimes (often) the things that he says about breeders - their self absorption and lack of awareness, I wholeheartedly agree with. I say this as a multiple breeder.
I have a PhD but often happily talk rubbish on mn. I think he is joking about the standard of literacy on here but I am happy for him to hold and form whatever opinion he feels appropriate

harryhausen · 15/04/2016 09:17

I like him.

He does always play devils advocate. He often spouts an (uncomfortable) counter argument to his panel for interest. I think he's intelligent and a great 'hack' (sorry if that offends MN). He does speak sarcastically at times. I've seen him be rude to people who are rude to him on the phone. I've seen him shout down and cut off people who spout racism. I find his programme interesting.

And yes, it's great to follow on to The Daily Politics afterwards on BBC2. It's like reading the tabloids on telly and then moving on to the serious papers Grin

BTW, I bet he posts here. Any guesses?

BillSykesDog · 15/04/2016 10:06

I think a lot of it is devil's advocate too. I have to say I enjoy the show. It's interesting. And I know Mumsnetters moan about the researchers coming on here for ideas, but doesn't it make MN more relevant in popular culture and also mean that they are covering topics that are of interest to the demographic on here i.e. mother's of children who are a bit more likely to be home watching TV at that time in the morning?

gandalf456 · 15/04/2016 10:09

I sometimes watch his show. Blush

Maybe some of us are.

But I don't know what that makes his viewers (Channel 5, daytime TV????) or his readership? (Doesn't he have a column in The Mirror??)

The80sweregreat · 15/04/2016 10:16

He nicks topics mentioned on here - I did used to watch a few years ago but was fed up with him doing this and being horrible to people that ring up, he hates anyone who disagrees with him. The constant ads too, listen to the radio now instead ( without any ads in them)
mind you, he mentioned the 'penis beaker' episode once on a media type programme on in the evening ( not his one in the morning) and that got me looking , so I guess I have him to thank for that that I found this forum at all.
that's a shock that he does want children - not judging, but he does have a very dim of view of us ' breeders of consumers' as he used to call us and often said he couldn't see the appeal of having a child! I guess his second wife, who is a bit younger than him I think, has talked him round. good luck to her though!

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/04/2016 10:29

BTW, I bet he posts here. Any guesses?

Hmmm, well I'd say you Wink, but I doubt he's as well versed on germs and science-y what-nots* as you.

*technical term

NNalreadyinuse · 15/04/2016 10:36

Years ago the name Matthew Wright was generally followed by the word cunt, on MN. Might explain why he hates us. Or it might be a chicken and egg situation and we hate him because he hates us.

Either way, he is a former tabloid journalist, so I wouldn't give too much weight to his criticism - people in glass houses etc.

I am irritated by him calling us illiterate and ignorant. I phoned his show once and he agreed with me, so if I am ignorant, then he is too!

He is rude to people who disagree with him, but I do think there is something quite likeable about him, sonlong as one's expectations are not too high.

The lovely Kevin O' Sullivan is on in a minute, doing the telly review. He is lush and I so would worth putting up with MW for Wink
