To make her pay for my stuff?

I'm room sharing with a co-worker I don't really know for my firm's annual skiing weekend. Went to bed reasonably early last night in order to get some more skiing time today while my roommate apparently opted to participate in the traditional piss up around town.

I slept like a baby and did not hear her come in. Woke up this morning to find the entire bathroom covered in vomit - including several specks on and around the stuff I'd left in the bathroom (moisturiser, hairbrush, some makeup). Had to invite myself to guest-shower in my boss's bathroom because it's just that disgusting!

AIBU to bin my stuff and ask her to pay for it?

E-mailed her again this morning but got no response, so I rang her after lunch.

She was noticeably miffed at being asked but agreed to PayPal me the money after I pointed out that excessive consumption of alcohol at social events technically violates company policy (nobody actually cares, though).

Well, tough luck!

Well done magical, I think I would have been a coward and not pursued it if it was me and she'd ignored 2 emails! She has no right to be miffed, she threw up on your stuff!

expatinscotland · 15/03/2016 15:18

What a cheeky biatch she is! Miffed after leaving the place such a state? Cow. I hope she pays up sharpish. She doesn't and I'd go to her supervisor.

coconutpie · 15/03/2016 15:20

She's got some nerve. I would bill her for the moisturiser and serum too - she replaces everything and the full cost of it.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 15/03/2016 15:23

Way to go Magical - hope you get your money back soon.

Puppymouse · 15/03/2016 15:28

I had hoped reading the thread she would get in touch but to ignore two emails and then sound miffed she's clearly either embarrassed to the point of unreasonableness or she's just a twat.

I admire your persistence OP!

SirChenjin · 15/03/2016 17:05

Well.done you! Cheeky mare - she obviously doesn't think there's anything wrong with puking on other people's stuff, leaving it for them to clean up and not apologising profusely. She deserves to be charged to replace the items.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 15/03/2016 17:11

I think she's just a twat! but well done for standing your ground Magical.

Next year make sure you puke in her ski boots Grin

MatildaTheCat · 15/03/2016 17:13

Definitely replace the whole lot without any further delay and send her the entire receipt. Refusing to reply to your emails and then having the cheek to sound miffed is beyond rude.

Buy nice stuff. Offer her the vomit stained remains if she gets arsey.

For those saying what's it got to do with HR ... If it's a trip provided by work then employment case law in the uk is apparently clear, what happens is the concern of the company. Someone I used to work with got fired because of something he said (after too much booze) at a work event. He discovered he had no grounds to appeal this decision as it did not count as being 'in his own time'. The OP has also confirmed that her company have a written policy about not getting drunk at company events.

Evidently much of the case law is related to sackings after Xmas parties ....

Why does this not surprise me?

I'm not taking this to HR either way. She might not be quite as nice as she initially seemed but that would be too much. She doesn't deserve that, we've all got stupidly drunk at company dos.

FWIW, as a graduate schemer during my first year at the firm I once got so plastered that my boss had to carry me back to my room as I had fallen fast asleep at a bar. It was well worth his while: there has been absolutely nothing I wouldn't do for the man ever since and it's been years! He laughs about it - I'm still mortified! Blush

ETA: I've learned my lesson - hence the reason I don't take part in the piss-ups after events anymore.

Has she paid up yet?

MagicalHamSandwich · 17/03/2016 19:28

Yes, actually, she has. Sent me an email to confirm, too. Still sounds a bit miffed but made no fuss in the end.

Who cares if she's miffed? Silly moo she is. Hope she's learned to reign it in more when she's in a work setting. I'm just glad you got the money.

SuperFlyHigh · 17/03/2016 19:55

Agree with expat 100%.

Lesson to all that God forbid if this happens to any of us or similar to stand our ground!

flubdub · 17/03/2016 22:48

Not being funny - yeah it's really gross and I would be mad too.
But I probably wouldn't say anything (unless in a passive aggressive jokey way), and I'd boil/dishwasher what I could, and bin the rest.
But if the brushes or moisturiser were expensive, I'd probably say "hey you owe me new moisturiser! This is gross you dirty moo!"

KittenOfWoe · 24/03/2016 00:39

Good, should think so too!!
Miffed how?! Can't believe she's got the brass!

BeaLola · 24/03/2016 01:02

Slightly off thread but I would not want to share with someone I don't know. I wouldn't want them listening to my snoring, talking in my sleep etc in fact bad enough sharing with someone you do know - I know it's a company provided trip but I wouldn't go. Never in my past jobs when we used to go away a lot for team building , training etc have We ever had to share thank god ! Bad enough being on an event when close work friends fiancée of longstanding started shagging someone he met that night at dinner whilst she was at home and found out by calling him to chat and said person answered hotel phone .... He dumped fiancée , got engaged after a week and married after 3 months to new woman - the fallout at work was not good - he was a twat though and she certainly had a lucky escape.

SoThatHappened · 24/03/2016 01:49

Jesus that is spectacular.

Ive been so drunk I couldnt stand up as I was too dizzy and had to lie on my friends lounge floor absolutely paralytic.

When the time came, I was still able to walk to the bathroom and use the toilet to be sick in.

good you didnt back down!
