I think we're due a name change. Just looked at Relationships and 3 out of the 4 top threads are by men.

Mumsnet is fine. I hardly ever look at the Relationships topic.

I used to spend a lot of time in Relationships - but so much crap has gone on there recently - you literally can't believe a thing you read.

I come on here for a bit of light relief and a laugh in between working - and it's finally dawned on me that is not the place to find it.

So I'm venturing forth into other areas and I'm liking it! Who knew there was a whole section on ebay? I didn't!

You are not wrong Fontella, hide the right topics and MN can be a nicer experience. I recently unhid AIBU topic, still pondering whether it was a mistake.

Hennifer · 08/03/2016 10:20

I post on several male dominated sites. I expect to have to fit in with the general ethos and feel of the site, the way people address one another etc.

Try talking like you would on MN on the PPRuNe for example. It wouldn't work. Not because they are men, or unfeeling bastards or anything, but because it wouldn't fit in.

And by fit in I don't mean 'talk like a bird', I mean use the site like the rest of us - understand the gist, the dynamic.

Not sure there is an english word for it but the Germans have it with 'sich unterhalten'.

Seeyounearertime · 08/03/2016 10:21

I don't know how you tell peoples sex from their username?

I will say i usually enjoy a topic that starts:
"I am a man..."

They usually go well. Grin

Mumsnet is just a name - it could be called the igloo for all I care.

There is nothing wrong with men coming to get advice from women is there?

Fontella · 08/03/2016 10:22

How do you hide topics Sparklingbrook? That's a new one on me.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 10:22

I have my 'male perspective here' options covered. I have a father, a brother, a husband and two teenage DSs.

mithy · 08/03/2016 10:23

A healthy dose of cynicism is essential on MN, mixed with a warped sense of humour and the hide of a rhinoceros.

Time to waste is also useful.

Nothing at all, however if men started to make up a significant proportion of the population here, it would no longer be asking advice from women. It would be asking advice from some women and some other blokes.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 10:25

Fontella go to Customise, scroll to the bottom and you will see 'Ignore topics in Active Conversations' then click where it says 'go here' and you can move your topics from unhidden to hidden individually.

Hidden topic threads won't appear in your active but unfortunately it doesn't wipe them from Trending.

DadDadDad

You're male? Shock

PurpleDaisies · 08/03/2016 10:25

There are all sorts of good boards fontella. Arts and crafts and small pets are my favourites. Can you tell what my hobbies are?!

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 10:26

Disclaimer-I am on the trusty laptop so not sure how to do it on the phone.

Hennifer · 08/03/2016 10:26

Thanks Sparklingbrook!

The Litter Tray is a nice topic. Smile Sleb Twaddle also quite underused but fun.

Anything that starts "hello ladies" normally goes the same way. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 10:28

'Hello ladies'

Fontella · 08/03/2016 10:32

There's one over there calling them all 'girls'. That's going down well as you can imagine!

Folkgirl pulled up a male poster using "girls", which was amusing.

OP posts:
NickiFury · 08/03/2016 10:36

I don't think you're wrong to suspect that usual. And they always come in swathes; with some well meaning nick name, with "Dad" somewhere in it. That's what's happening at he moment anyway and I don't believe a word of any of them. Happens quite regularly, like a mini campaign every couple of months.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 10:38

Jeffrey didn't help the males on MN reputation much.

Hennifer · 08/03/2016 10:40

I think Jeff wa in a class of his own tbh. I don't think of him as a bloke. Just a big loser. Most of the men on here seem genuinely nice.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 08/03/2016 10:40

Exactly, Nicki and Usual.
There are a few male dominated forums that regularly send thier users over here to either wind people up or to 'prove' that everyone who posts here is a man hater.
Then they do a lot of back slapping over on their own forum while they laugh at the responses on MN.

There's been a definite influx over the past few weeks which seems to have (Hopefully) peaked in the last couple of days.
