Shoes off house rule

So we have a shoes off rule in our house. Mainly because of the grubby London streets and dog poo everywhere locally plus a floor licking toddler.

Every time my parents visit I have to ask them to take their shoes off. EVERY Fing TIME! They act like its such a massive imposition.

AIBU or would you just shut up and put up?

Personally I think it's massive control freakery, weird carpet love, and desire to see guests sit there with freezing tootsies.

Actually we have this rule too, and any kids that visits have to do it, but we let it pass for the adults. Not that any adults come in our house.
I think that its not the end of the world and in our case they (parents) only come twice a year so if they want to keep their footwear on then so be it.
But then I break the rule myself when DH isn't around so I'm probably not the person to comment on this...

It's rude to ask guests to remove their shoes.

I guess it's your choice but I would rather people feel more comfortable.
I actually hate taking my shoes off and would feel very conscious and cold doing so. My friends does this and her place is freezing and I just feel miserable sitting there with frozen feet and my odd socks.

HATE being asked to take my shoes off! I do of course, but it's ridiculous IMO

You would have to remind me too. Its not something I'd naturally do but if you asked then I would obviously but I won't remember what everyone's rules are regarding shoe wearing.

I can't understand why they want to keep outdoor shoes on inside! Different for non family but all my family and in laws leave shoes at the door.

I find it utterly disgusting that people wear shoes in the house.

I hate shoes in house! In my house the front door opens directly into the living room and I have a baby and toddler (and dog poo phobia - I have a dog though). I don't think it's rude at all

it is the done thing in Scandinavia (not that that makes Ikea a source of style - at all)
I always take my shoes off when visiting anywhere with carpeted floors - if hard floors/tiles I also agree to do so if asked. When you consider what shoes/boots may have trodden in it is nice not to have that spread over the house.
The only exceptions when I have visitors is for children and dogs - adults follow my house my rules.

So do some people sit with their shoes on the whole time then? Even in your own house? I can't imagine sitting all evening in my mucky winter boots. Everywhere I have been has been shoes off, my whole life. I must run in really uncultured circles.

Totally reasonable request! I always ask people to take their shoes off, we live on a lane that is just mud, no concrete or anything so most shoes end up caked in mud during winter months. I would still ask even if we didn't live here though. My parents came round a few weeks ago and they actually refused to take their shoes off, I was quite speechless given how strict they used to be with me growing up! So I told them to wait in the hall :)

Your house your rules! Plus who want's to walk in someones muddy/wet foot prints be it on carpet or on wood flooring? Ew!

Although if it's your parents, I suppose you could ask them to bring slippers.

My DD has a baby and this rule. We know this, so always take slippers with us. It's really not a big deal!

shoes are outdoor wear. can't believe people find it ruder to remove shoes than the find it rude to mess up someone laminate with heels or carpets with dirt.

No shoes in my house. If people don't take the hint when they lots of shoes by the door and take them off, I ask them to take them off.
My mum bring a pair of little roll-up slippers that fit in her handbag because she doesn't like to be barefoot or just in socks for some strange reason

I ask people to remove their shoes, but I have slippers available if people want them.

We have a no shoes rule too. I can't understand why you would wear shoes indoors and traipse all the crap from outside in?

Shoes off here too. Everyone just does, and I always ask when visiting whether they want me to.

Why do they think they don't have to?
