Shoes off house rule

BettyBi0 · 02/03/2016 16:11

So we have a shoes off rule in our house. Mainly because of the grubby London streets and dog poo everywhere locally plus a floor licking toddler.

Every time my parents visit I have to ask them to take their shoes off. EVERY Fing TIME! They act like its such a massive imposition.

AIBU or would you just shut up and put up?

In my home country explaining shoes off as caring more about your floors than your guests would be laughed out loud at! It'd be exactly the same as to say that you wipe your bum because you are precious about your underpants! Of course not - it's basic hygiene.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/03/2016 18:20

Wiping your bum is a private matter and its exposure to everyone is a bit different to wearing shoes Confused. Not comparable.

cleaty · 06/03/2016 18:22

During the summer I wear sandals with no socks regularly. But would be expected to go barefoot?

Pyjamaramadrama · 06/03/2016 18:33

What I don't understand is the snobbery either way.

Those who wear shoes inside aren't dirty and those who do t aren't lower class wannabes.

What surprises me is that some see feet as almost private parts and going barefoot as exposing yourself somehow.

cleaty · 06/03/2016 18:34

Yes I do. Horrible to have bare feet in public. It feels like wearing a bikini in someone's house.

Pyjamaramadrama · 06/03/2016 18:42

Aren't sandals as bad then? Or is that different.

Hard floors are definitely the way to go then nobody needs to worry about correct shoe etiquette.

Pyjamaramadrama · 06/03/2016 18:49

Where do people stand on coasters?

Nodowntime · 06/03/2016 18:52

coasters are pointless clutter Grin

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2016 18:53

That's a whole other thread Pyjama but from other threads about coasters they are 'common' apparently.

You should not want or need to protect your furniture from marks and tea stains etc. i can't remember why.

Natsku · 06/03/2016 19:02

Where do people stand on coasters?

I only allow people to stand on coasters in the kitchen. With their shoes off, of course.

Pyjamaramadrama · 06/03/2016 19:05

Grin Natsku, bare feet on your coasters, how common.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/03/2016 19:06

Ah. But are they artisan coasters?

Nodowntime · 06/03/2016 19:06

Natsku Grin Grin

"What surprises me is that some see feet as almost private parts and going barefoot as exposing yourself somehow."

It's not that they're private exactly...I don't look at other people with no shoes on and go Shock OMG, they're naked!!! Rofl.

I just feel a bit, undressed, being somewhere other than my house with no shoes on, a bit like if I'd gone somewhere in pyjamas I suppose.

Natsku · 06/03/2016 19:11

Of course they're artisanal coasters, I wouldn't have any other kind.

I feel more comfortable everywhere if I have my shoes off tabulahrasa I tend to take them off anywhere I can.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/03/2016 19:29

"I don't look at other people with no shoes on and go shock OMG, they're naked!!!"

Me neither, but I am shocked at people wearing small sandals to work or exposing large parts of their feet without socks or tights. I have all sorts of bits of dry skin sticking out of my feet and being made to expose them would be horrific. Having said that my feet are too cold to go without socks most of the time so it would only happen in extreme circumstances.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/03/2016 19:31

"from other threads about coasters they are 'common' apparently."

I learnt that for the first time reading Watching the English by Kate Fox. She was arguing that they are bad gifts (too late for me!).

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2016 19:37

I am glad I didn't dream it Gwen can you remember why they were deemed common? I can't. Grin

TeenAndTween · 06/03/2016 19:39

a bit like if I'd gone somewhere in pyjamas I suppose.

But do you not do the school run in your pyjamas? Apparently people think that is fine. Smile

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2016 20:02

"But do you not do the school run in your pyjamas?"

No I do not, I occasionally put the bins out in them and feel exposed then...they're not exactly skimpy either, lol

Gabilan · 06/03/2016 20:08

I have a fine collection of coasters sent by charities who appear to think this will guilt me into setting up a DD with them. I don't, as only moving stopped WWF from nagging me after I set up a DD with them. Coasters are always useful for wedging wonky furniture.

Tiggeryoubastard · 06/03/2016 20:37

Or throwing vaguely in the direction (note; not at) of cats knocking things off the sideboard glares at Roger.

chilipepper20 · 06/03/2016 23:02

No one who is shoes off seems to care if people have to walk around bare foot in their house?

socks? if the weather is cold?

chilipepper20 · 06/03/2016 23:03

During the summer I wear sandals with no socks regularly. But would be expected to go barefoot?

yes. if it's a no shoes house, hopefully the floor is clean.

cleaty · 06/03/2016 23:10

Socks with sandals!
And I have had to walk barefoot in friends houses and went home with dirty feet. I think this is horrible.
