Shoes off house rule

BettyBi0 · 02/03/2016 16:11

So we have a shoes off rule in our house. Mainly because of the grubby London streets and dog poo everywhere locally plus a floor licking toddler.

Every time my parents visit I have to ask them to take their shoes off. EVERY Fing TIME! They act like its such a massive imposition.

AIBU or would you just shut up and put up?

I always ask when I go to anyone's home.

In our home, we are shoes off and slippers on family. We have indoor slippers and a separate set of shoes for the back garden

We ask everyone to take off their shoes. We have guest 'slippers' in case anyone wants them.

If I were you I honestly would buy them a pair of slippers each (a £3 job off ebay!) and have them by the door for them.

Those who wear shoes at home, do you put them on in the morning as part of getting dressed?
We never wear shoes in the house and I take mine off when I'm visiting other people.
I don't ask people to when they visit me as its all hard flooring downstairs but of they were to need to go upstairs for any reason I would ask them to.

I wouldn't dream of asking a guest in my home to remove their shoes, if they want to that's fine , my house is clean and warm but adults look a bit silly padding around in bare feet in someone else's house, nor would I walk mud through someone else's house, I'd either change my shoes in the car if they were muddy or give them a good wipe on the doormat, would anyone seriously ask a grown professional like. Doctor or policeman to remove their shoes before entering their home? They would look mental!!!

I don't wear shoes in my own house but that's a comfort thing rather than a clean thing.

Op, do your parents keep their shoes on at home?

When my parents used to visit for the day they brought their slippers with them.

As long as you have a basket of artisanal slippers Grin

We have a shoes off rule for us and the DC and DC's friends who come round. My parents always take their slippers with them when they visit! If it was someone I didn't know very well, I wouldn't ask them to take their shoes off. YANBU to ask your parents to.

Shoes off in carpeted houses.
If you don't like to have nothing on your feet, then take a spare pair of socks or slippers with you when you visit people.

As a family we are shoes off. But i dont ask other people to take them off, i assume they wipe then though.

My neighbour is obsessed with shoes off. With everyone. doesnt even use the front door either so no chance of accidentally standing on carpet.

When i go to friends with new carpet / weird ass rules i take my slippers or bedsocks as my feet are always cold and my toes would go white.

We're relaxed about it, generally take them off but if I'm just popping into the house and going straight back out (which happens all the time), I might walk through with them on, the pavements are pretty clean here. As for guests, most do take them off, but if they don't I wouldn't dream of asking them to as that would be far ruder IMO.

YABU. Dear god, here come the 'guest slippers'. I take mine off or ask, but I would never demand it of a guest or that they wear guest slippers.

Yanbu. We have a no shoe rule because i dont want to mop the floors or hire a carpet cleaner all the time. Isn't it uncomfortable to sit around in shoes all the time? We relax it for people who aren't staying long of course.
My mother seemed to like scrubbing carpets by hand all the time so we were allowed to wear shoes in the house. Then she bought cream carpets and put these wierd plastic carpet covers down permanently. Bizarre!

Not bothered at all here. Unless someone had shoes caked in mud. I do have dogs though, so can't be too fussy.

My shoes, my roolz, don't ya know.

I do tend to suffer from very cold feet, one of the reasons I often don't remove shoes in my own house. Literally, they turn to blocks of ice. I use microwaveable slippers to take the edge off, but usually all that happens is my blocks of ice feet cooling the slippers off very rapidly.

We have the same rule in our house, the PILs have it in their house as well. Every single time they come to our house they refuse to take their shoes off. Therefore we don't take our shoes of when we go to their house, this offends them because they want to keep their carpets clean. Apparently shoes don't get wooden floors dirty so they don't need to take them off at our house!
This is one reason why I never invite them. One of many

YANBU, they are!
Quite why anyone would let someone into their house wearing dirty shoes is beyond me, outside is dirty!
How do you get comfortable with your shoes still on anyway?

It's become natural now for everyone that comes in our house to take their shoes off, even my Dad who is a cantacerous (sp?) old git. The in laws actually bring their slippers which is an interesting look when they are all dolled up for Christmas dinner lol.

Those who wear shoes at home, do you put them on in the morning as part of getting dressed?

I do. I tried the shoes off thing when I first moved to Sweden. Then I broke my toe on a packing crate and the shoes went back on. We were invited to a party once. How bloody weird was it to be dressed up in my best frock and to leave my gorgeous expensive perfectly matched shoes on the porch while I wandered through the beer spills and cake crumbs in my stockinged feet. I'm living amongst savages. Wink

I do not want to wear slippers that dozens of other sweaty feet have been in.

No to guest slippers.

Popcorn here. Maybe wine later.

We have a no shoes rule. I just tell people to bring their slippers with them then they won't have cold feet and they know that they'll be expected to take their shoes off.

I get that some people find it rude, but why should I pay to have my carpets cleaned because people are continually traipsing dirty shoes through my house and no matter what you may think, you do bring dirt in.
