Shoes off house rule

BettyBi0 · 02/03/2016 16:11

So we have a shoes off rule in our house. Mainly because of the grubby London streets and dog poo everywhere locally plus a floor licking toddler.

Every time my parents visit I have to ask them to take their shoes off. EVERY Fing TIME! They act like its such a massive imposition.

AIBU or would you just shut up and put up?

I have the same shoes off rule.

My house my rules!

What about pets? They generally wear shoes. And they can't take their paws off.

What do they do?

Hmm. I always assume that shoes off houses will also have serviettes and lounges and settees and they eat sweet instead of pudding. It's all a bit laboured delicacy. I do it, but I judge people.

Notso · 02/03/2016 16:44

My Mum never takes her shoes off if she is just 'popping in'. She does if she is staying for a long time.
I don't mind taking shoes off at other people's houses but have been to a few where the floors were manky with pet hair, crumbs etc and because it was summer I had bare feet. It was a bit grim tbh.

Shoes off here

Chocolatteaddict1 · 02/03/2016 16:45

People walking on my carpet makes my teeth itch.

FIL still takes his work boots off and puts them on my fucking cream carpet instead of the door mat beside my carpet Angry

DurhamDurham · 02/03/2016 16:45

We don't wear shoes in the house, family and close friends know this and take their shoes off in the porch. People who haven't been before aren't asked to take them off but when I'm talking to them I do find my eyes wandering to their feet because it just looks so wrong to see shoes on in the house.
I always offer to take my shoes off in other people's houses. I also have a lovely selection of slippers and socks for my friends when they visit, the ones I got free form a v nice spa are especially popular Smile I've never had any negative comments but I obviously don't know what they're thinking, it's worth it though as my flooring always looks clean and rarely needs shampooing.

Shoes can be v dirty, even a small splodge of mud can make a nasty mess on a light carpet. Nothing anyone says will change my mind, I'm v definite on this one Grin

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2016 16:45

We have napkins, a living room, settees and pudding, and shoes off. Not sure what that says about us. Confused

ZedWoman · 02/03/2016 16:46

No pets here. Shoes in the house I could just about stand - not pets.

I always think it's a little rude to ask guests to remove their shoes as many people feel self conscious without shoes on for various reasons, for example a relative is missing a big toe nail and gets very embarrassed about it.

I automatically remove my shoes at other people's houses, unless thier carpet looks a bit unsavoury!

AveEldon · 02/03/2016 16:47

Shoes off normal for London imho
My parents bring their slippers

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 16:48

I always assume the shoes on houses are full of Jeremy Kyle types in trainers who don't wash either. Wink

Yearns for a drawing room and not a commen lounge darlings.Grin

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/03/2016 16:48

We are a shoes off house but never ask guests to do so. Most of them take the hint as we have a big shoe rack by the door. However, we have wooden floors so it's easy to clean up afterwards. The only exception would be stilettos as they could wreck the floor.

FigMango1 · 02/03/2016 16:48

My feet my rules

GrinI like that. Seriously though would people feel ok knowing that guests might be awkward or cold and still expect them to take it off?

PiperChapstick · 02/03/2016 16:50

Everything usual said. Carpets can be cleaned!

I find it's often people with pets who cringe at the thought of shoes but who do nothing about the dog plonking its arse on the carpet.

ZedWoman · 02/03/2016 16:51

When DS was about 3 he trod in a bit dog sh*t and then walked around the house with his shoes on for a while. I am partially sighted and literally had to crawl round the house on hands and kneess 'sniffing out' and removing the offending patches.

Sod that! It's shoes off from now on.

Before anyone says that chidren and adults are different, my dad once trod a massive dog sh*t into my sister's living room carpet. Luckily, her eyesight is worse than mine so she had every justification in making him clean it up!

PiperChapstick · 02/03/2016 16:51

fig that's another reason I hate taking shoes off - I get very cold feet and only wear socks if I have boots on (rare). TBH I leave early if forced to take shoes off - so people don't have my wonderful company but at least they have super-clean floors Grin

OnlyLovers · 02/03/2016 16:52

I'm a wimp about this. I personally always take my shoes off at home –it's not comfortable otherwise and you can't put your feet up on the sofa!

And I'm happy to take my shoes off in other people's houses and always choose my socks assuming I'll have to (no embarrassing holes, pair of socks to slip on if I'm wearing tights or have bare feet and might get cold).

But if people come to my house and ask if they need to take their shoes off, I cop out and say 'There's no rule; up to you.' Mercifully, most people do take them off. Grin

PiperChapstick · 02/03/2016 16:54

only I would so take that as a thinly veiled PA attempt to make me take my shoes off Grin

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/03/2016 16:54

We have a sitting room, sofa, napkins and puddings. We also have prayer mats as DH and the DC are muslim. In DH's culture nobody wears shoes in the house.

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2016 16:54

I find this 'issue' does not cause as much angst in RL as it does on MN. Grin

RockUnit · 02/03/2016 16:55

Shoes on here. I don't like taking my shoes off. I get cold feet and always seem to step on something hard or wet in the house, or stub my toe!

But if I go to a shoes-off house then yes, I'd take them off without complaining.

ItchyArmpits · 02/03/2016 16:55

YAabsolutelyNBU.

Some might say it's rude to ask guests to take their shoes off, well, it's blooming rude to walk around someone's clean house in your dirty shoes.
