AIBU?

Who is BU- me or neighbour?

We get on well with our neighbours. We're not 'friends' as such but will always stop for a chat etc.

Yesterday I saw the woman at the corner shop and we walked home together having a chat.
On the way, she mentioned that I woke them up that morning with my hairdryer and, subtly, asked if I could not use the hairdryer early in the AM. With the way she asked she wasn't really asking for a response or even a conversation about it, just kind of mentioning it in passing I guess in the hope I'll change my routine IYSWIM. So, I didn't respond there and then.

I got home at told DH. He was really miffed about it and said she was very U and I should have told her to bugger off.

This hairdryer usage doesn't happen every day- 3 or 4 weekdays I shower at the gym so don't use a hairdryer at home. On the weekend, I either don't bother drying it or I'm doing it at about 10am.
So a couple of work days a week I do dry my hair at home and it's about 6am when I'm doing it- I recognise that this is v early for some!

I can't really dry my hair elsewhere in the house as the other 2 bedrooms are occupied by DCs and in the living room is the dog who's terrified of the hairdryer and will bark like a mad thing causing more noise.
DH said I'm mad for even considering sneaking around the house in the morning using the hairdryer somewhere inconvenient for me just to avoid inconveniencing the neighbours.

So, AIBU to be using the hairdryer at 6am a couple of days a week? Or is she BU to mention it?

I should say it's quite a powerful hairdryer and we have quite thin walls (we can hear their phone ringing, for example).

i would try and find a quieter hairdryer tbh.

Well if the walls are that thin I guess you probably want them to be considerate about noise? If you are up at 6 am you probably don't want them watching TV in bed at midnight as it would disturb you so I would be considerate if they are.

Well, I know this is crazy Alis but half the people responding probably DO live in different world. Bonkers I know! Some people don't commute or don't have long commutes, some people don't work 9-5. I get up around 6.15 but my semi is attached to a retired person's home. I don't think I have a right to make a load of noise in the morning because 'half the world' is already up.

I am genuinely stunned at the number of people that think drying your hair in your own bedroom is unreasonable. The op isn't blasting the radio or whisking up some meringues in an industrial food mixer she's drying her hair in her bedroom.
The op hears their phone should she ask them to stop people calling them? No because that would be odd. So is this. It's not every day either it's early yes but it's a work morning and the op has to be ready in time for work. It's unfortunate but buts part of living in such close quarters to others.

Tough luck I'm afraid. 5am would be different, but 6am is pretty standard wake up time.

I have a similar situation with my downstairs neighbors, I've quit my gym membership in place of a subscription work out at home thing. I must sound like an elephant coming through their ceiling, but that's just the unfortunate thing of living so close to people....

Well this is crazy long - but I don't work 9-5 either, bit of an assumption on your part.

I'm so glad my neighbours are normal.

Blimey. I use a hairdryer every other day at about 5.30am and I think I'd be a bit peeved if my ndn asked me not to. I don't have time to let it dry naturally and if I wash it the night before, it goes mental.

Personally, I don't think OP is being U at all. It's a couple of days, not exactly excessive.

You have really curly hair and you use a hairdryer?
Wow - mine would look like some mad frizz bomb if I tried to blow dry it and wasn't straightening it.
Wash, towel dry, frizz Eaze dream curl spray, scrunch and leave.

Wow mummypig14 no, stomping on their ceiling is NOT "just an unfortunate thing!"

This is where I start to wonder what planet some people live on.

Comparing it to vacuuming is a bit daft. That doesn't have to be done before the op leaves for work. Being clean and presentable does and I'm not saying this as someone demo has to be up and out for a commute to work.

YABU. Put it in a pony tail 2 days a week.

Glassofwineneeded · 02/03/2016 10:37

It's only twice a week! Continue with your routine, I am sure if they can hear the hairdryer then you can also hear them at times when you wish you couldn't!
It's part and parcel of living with adjoining walls!
A hairdryer will be quieter than your dog barking at that hour, quieter than the children crying too.

Hairdryer fine. I don't even think vacuuming is that bad. Or making any other normal household noise - though no DIY til after 8am in my opinion.

YANBU, "wash and dry the night before" just doesn't work unless you have the right kind of hair for it. I for one wouldn't look very presentable or professional doing that.

People moaning about every bit of noise need to get over themselves. As a PP said, it's part and parcel of living in a terraced / semi-detached houses. If drying your hair in the kitchen / somewhere else that will disturb your neighbours less is an option, of course you should try to accomodate her. But if there isn't another workable solution for you, she'll have to suck it up and buy some earplugs.

Can you at least compromise by moving to the far side of your bedroom - so not against the wall?

Report
longdiling · 02/03/2016 10:40

I never said you did Alis Confused

I just pointed out that I don't see it as a valid argument. The neighbour who, by all accounts, is perfectly nice has pointed out, apparently also perfectly nicely, that she is being woken up by the hairdryer. So it's completely irrelevant whether half the world is awake then or not, the neighbour isn't!

If I lived next door to someone doing night shifts and my hoovering at 10am disturbed them I wouldn't think 'fuck you, most people are awake so it's my right to hoover!'. I would try and see if I could do something about it.

"6am is standard wake up time"

By that you mean it's your standard wake up time Laurie? It's not here.

"6am is standard wake up time"

Not in my world it's not.

OP, I'd just buy a quieter hairdryer that doesn't wake the neighbours or frighten the dog.

You are definitely not being unreasonable to dry your hair in your bedroom a few days a week. It was very unreasonable for your neighbour to suggest you stop! If you are very nice you could try a less powerful dryer but then you'd probably need to use it for twice as long so meh.

Oooh, wow, thanks for all the comments.

There's a real mix here. I have to say I was (and still am) leaning towards the posters who say it's a part of living in a semi-detached house and she needs to suck it up.

There's not really anywhere else to dry my hair in the house as I said in the OP and Rose I am against the far wall already (i.e. not the one joined on to theirs)

Also, a less powerful hairdryer would mean drying it for twice as long which I don't have time for in the morning. Also not entirely sure I'm willing to buy new stuff when I have perfectly serviceable stuff already just because it's inconvenient for my neighbour. That is U, I think!

I'm a naturally early riser (well not exactly naturally, but that's a different thread). If I wasn't I'd be woken by:

Neighbour 1 that has a diesel car and leaves for work at 0630.
Neighbour 2 whose dog barks a couple of times under my bedroom window at 0600.
Neighbour 3 (adjoining) who plugs in 'something' at 0600 every morning.
Neighbour 4 another diesel car at 0645.
Neighbour 5 who slams his front door after getting the milk in at about 0700.

I'd also be woken by the bin men who come at 0630 every second week and the paperboy and the milkman who comes to neighbors daily at 0630.

Adjoining (retired) neighbour turns his TV on at 0700 every morning - that's my queue to go and get a shower (and dry my hair!). He also watches TV in bed until about 11pm (loud enough for me to be able to tell what channel it is Smile.

This is a sleepy village 5 miles or so from a couple of major towns. All normal and inescapable noise.

If you're not up yourself until 7.30 or 8, 6 am is very early to be woken up. Especially when you have to get up later to go to work. When this happens to me it's 5.10 am and I wake up very grumpy and find it hard to wake up with my alarm later - but getting up that early is just ridiculous. Neighbour cannot help waking me and I can't help being disgruntled. Options are grin and bear it or wear ear plugs...

How long does your hair take to dry?

If I knew I was doing something unnecessary at such an early hour that was bothering my neighbours, I'd stop. It's just not worth the strained relationship.

Does your hair need to be washed every single morning? That's not good for it! Can't you wear a shower cap on those mornings? Or at least buy a quieter hairdryer?

As an aside; mummypig that is so inconsiderate! I can't believe some people have this attitude!
