But I've never seen a spin off or flounce off site flourish.

IME they either die off really fast due to too little fresh blood, or implode with in fighting over whose (new) ball it is anyway

The (initially really quite successful) spin off from iVillage I flounced with imploded with such bitter, twisted nastiness that I can't even look at an eazyboard forum without shuddering.
