She did look a bit like a bag lady.

A well-dressed bag lady

If you go against a dress code people WILL comment.
It's an occasion when everybody dresses up to the nines, men and woman.
There's a dress code.

So, if you rock up wearing a scruffy, unfeminine leather jacket and bulky scarf ensemble, then people are going to comment.
When I saw her, my immediate thought was ''wtf is she dressed like that''.
She was obviously trying to prove a point. What that was, God only knows.

Stephen Fry was only saying what most people were all thinking.

I'm not outraged at Stephen Fry's comment.

I think he is rude, not terribly funny, and raised an eyebrow when I heard him say it. I am a bit bored of hearing comments constantly about women's appearances when the purpose of an event is not to do with appearance but performance or skill.

This.

rosebiggs · 15/02/2016 17:28

Perhaps she didn't fancy squeezing herself into a dress as it must have been bloody freezing. I thought she looked fine. As a highly accomplished designer she presumably knows more about fashion than anyone on this thread.

hollowlegs · 15/02/2016 17:28

Laughing at all the people saying they see nothing wrong with how she was dressed.

I'd love to see their faces if for example, guests showed up at their weddings wearing jeans and trainers.
They'd be the first to complain when the photos looked shit.

Dress codes are there for a reason.

OP posts:
Narp · 15/02/2016 17:30

Nah, its because she looks her age, and has no make up on. Rather like Steven Fry

She was wearing hat she likes; what she feels comfortable in. She cares about how she looks - that's clear because she chose that scarf. An accessory

Helmetbymidnight · 15/02/2016 17:30

Um I think we must mix in very different circles op.

How on earth would what my guests wear make my photos look shit? I mean, how on earth is that possible?

(My Dad did wear trainers and jeans to my wedding)

Narp · 15/02/2016 17:30

what, not hat

If Steven Fry didn't have form for misogyny maybe I'd let him off. But he does

Narp · 15/02/2016 17:31

hollowlegs

Are we all the same? Do we all give a shit about how people look in wedding photos?

Nope.

rosebiggs · 15/02/2016 17:31

Had Kiera knightly, Emma Watson or another younger woman turned up in a leather jacket thrre would have been a different response.

hollowlegs · 15/02/2016 17:32

Well you're unusual if your dad wore scruffy clothes at your wedding.

At most weddings, the bride and groom want their guests to dress up.

Why is that I wonder? Confused

OP posts:
StillStayingClassySanDiego · 15/02/2016 17:32

Dress code there for a reason? her attire didn't prevent her from being admitted did it.

Perhaps she's doesn't ever dress up for these occasions and doesn't give a fuck.

LineyReborn · 15/02/2016 17:32

You have a nice chortle, OP.

Meanwhile the object of your derision can enjoy her BAFTA.

NotJanine · 15/02/2016 17:33

Her outfit would have been fine at my wedding. It's people that matter, not the clothes they wear!

Narp · 15/02/2016 17:33

She did dress up. Her version of dress up. It bears no relation to what she was there for

rosebiggs · 15/02/2016 17:35

Well done you op for having a better understanding of dress codes than a bafta winning designer.

Maudofallhopefulness · 15/02/2016 17:35

Guests at my wedding wore whatever they wanted. Some dressed up, some wore shorts or jeans. We all had a very lovely day and the photos show all my favourite people in the world looking happy.

whatevva · 15/02/2016 17:35

Well, I find Stephen Fry an irritating twat.

But.......

Having watched the clip, I think he did put the emphasis heavily on 'Only the best...' with the implication that she is well above dressing up.

She looked fine - certainly looked like she had taken a lot of care, especially with her hair. She obviously isn't a big dress person. That's for the actresses?

Owllady · 15/02/2016 17:36

The worst of it is, stephen went home and drowned some kittens

cleaty · 15/02/2016 17:36

I have had an award at a ceremony with an evening wear dress code. Everyone who got an award was very smart apart from one person. Nobody cared.

ginghamcricketbox · 15/02/2016 17:36

This just about sums the entire saga.

Floisme · 15/02/2016 17:37

No, wouldn't give a shit what anyone wore to my wedding. If they were all in jeans and trainers then I'd be the best dressed woman in the photos.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 15/02/2016 17:39

There was nothing wrong with what she wore, but it was quite funny that someone so celebrated for costume design, with 9 Oscar nominations, should turn up looking like she didn't give a damn. If she'd been collecting an award for sound design or something nobody would have mentioned it, but if I'd been in Fry's shoes I'd also have been sorely tempted to play on the ironic mismatch between her brilliant costume work for others and her lack of concern for her own appearance, especially if she was a mate. The important thing is that she's great at her job, which Fry said very clearly. Her scruffy appearance is trivial, and the people who are getting outraged on her behalf are playing the Daily Mail's game. It's fine for her to be scruffy and it's OK to point out that she's scruffy - neither is a moral sin unless you're the Daily Mail.

Owllady · 15/02/2016 17:40

Love the daily mash :o

fresta · 15/02/2016 17:42

In relation to the usually accepted formal dress of the average Bafta attendee she DID look like a bag lady!

If that's what she wanted to look like, then fine, she had every right to wear what she wanted. And Stephen Fry had every right to comment.

I'm sure the comment was taken the way he intended it anyway, someone who comes to the Baftas wearing what she did is obviously intending to make some sort of statement so she will be expecting comment. She is hardly likely to be offended and would most probably be most disappointed if no debate or comments ensued.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/02/2016 17:43

Did you get all your wedding guests to wear matching outfits?

Did you cry if your bridesmaids put on weight?!!

Did you make sure your disabled mate wasn't in any photos?

Just wondering. Im getting quite a strong idea about what's important to you - intelligence and individuality isn't, right?

Narp · 15/02/2016 17:44

Costume design isn't about making everyone look glamorous; it's about making their clothes suit their character. She chose clothes to suit her character. There's no irony there
