She did look a bit like a bag lady.

A well-dressed bag lady

If you go against a dress code people WILL comment.
It's an occasion when everybody dresses up to the nines, men and woman.
There's a dress code.

So, if you rock up wearing a scruffy, unfeminine leather jacket and bulky scarf ensemble, then people are going to comment.
When I saw her, my immediate thought was ''wtf is she dressed like that''.
She was obviously trying to prove a point. What that was, God only knows.

Stephen Fry was only saying what most people were all thinking.

Isn't there a bit of a tradition of being rude to recipients of awards by hosts at these daft shindigs? I find it pretty hard to get excited about -
What anyone was wearing
What Steven Fry says about anything.

LineyReborn · 15/02/2016 16:45

She can wear what she fucking well likes and be incredibly successful. As she, in fact, proved.

Which is a bit of a triumph, actually.

WileHallion · 15/02/2016 16:48

Mad Max: Fury Road was fucking fantastic and she thoroughly deserves all the awards she gets. The costumes were brilliant.

velourvoyageur · 15/02/2016 16:48

what the fuck do you mean by 'unfeminine' Hmm so bizarre

GoringBit · 15/02/2016 16:49

Behooven, from the Guardian...

Fry was also criticised on Twitter for his Eddie Redmayne introduction: “He has been a man trapped in his own body, a woman trapped in a man’s body and, if I had my way, a man trapped in my basement.”

I know it's a joke, but yuck. Admittedly I think Stephen Fry is massively irritating, so I maybe IABU to find it grim.

Maudofallhopefulness · 15/02/2016 16:50

Maybe she felt comfortable in her clothes not awkward.

Stephen Fry may be mates with her but even it it was just matey banter, he insulted her very publicly. Surely he should realise the wider implications that others will hear that and be shocked and offended. It was rude.

If he'd said it in the bar, she might have felt better placed to say 'fuck off you fat, pompous cunt' and that would be more like banter. On stage, just insulting.

HaveIGotAClue · 15/02/2016 16:51

Ok, having read the link, it was clearly a joke. He intended it as a joke, she took it as joke. The audience took it as a joke.

Some people have senses of humour, some don't.

Kudos to her for going against the grain.

hollowlegs · 15/02/2016 16:51

She can wear what she fucking well likes and be incredibly successful. As she, in fact, proved.

Liney, I disagree,
the great Sir Sidney Pottier wasn't even AT the awards and yet he managed to scrub up for the occasion when they filmed him with his family.
The guy's nearly 90 ffs.
Now that's style for you.

What's her excuse?

DonkeyOaty · 15/02/2016 16:52

Woman wears clothes not deemed suitable by host therefore is alikened to a bag lady.

Woman wears clothes not deemed "feminine" enough by OP who agrees with host

Give your head a wobble OP

Behooven · 15/02/2016 16:52

Thanks Goring
Wow near the knuckle.

NotJanine · 15/02/2016 16:53

I thought it was more rock chick than bag lady. Fabulous!

Is she going to be at the Oscars?

LineyReborn · 15/02/2016 16:53

What, you disagree that she's successful? She just won a BAFTA.

PerspicaciaTick · 15/02/2016 16:54

Go on then OP - tell us what she should have worn instead. Preferably with a link to a picture of someone of a similar age/body shape wearing said outfit.

WileHallion · 15/02/2016 16:54

Janine yes she's up for the Oscar.

I have a feeling Sandy Powell will get it for 'Carol' though,I hope I'm wrong.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/02/2016 16:56

She was more stylishly dressed than Fry's child husband that's for sure. Grim.

hollowlegs · 15/02/2016 16:56

thought it was more rock chick than bag lady. Fabulous!

That wasn't rock chick

more like fell-into-a-skip-chick

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 15/02/2016 16:57

hollow now you're just being a goady fucker.

DonkeyOaty · 15/02/2016 16:58

But she's not a successful woman unless she dresses to conform to your expectations? Amiright?

TooAswellAlso · 15/02/2016 16:58

Nope, I watching at home and didn't notice her clothes.

I did notice SFs remark though and was shocked and thought arsehole.

Same as I noticed rebel Wilson referring to a black person as chocolate and being shocked and thought twat.

And then I switched it off.

hollowlegs · 15/02/2016 16:59

Perspicacia,

Well,
Bulky leather jacket would have to go for a start.
If you're short, then you don't want to be wearing a huge bulky scarf.

You asked for an example.
Judy Dench is 'of a certain age and shape' and she manages to look well turned out at these things.

OP posts:
ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 15/02/2016 17:00

I thought Fry knew her and it was an 'in joke' between them?

catsinthecraddle · 15/02/2016 17:00

I can't help finding it really annoying when famous people try to make a statement by dressing down to a black tie event/ very formal event.

It's silly. If you don't want to go, by all means, don't. If you turn up, make an effort. Nothing to do with being feminine, look at the state of Jamie Oliver when he received his MBE (2003).

gooseberryroolz · 15/02/2016 17:01

Even if she had collected her award in artfully stapled potato sack, it would still have been rude for the host of the event to comment disparagingly from the stage, on mic and on camera.

If he wants to 'josh' he can do it backstage. His professionalism evaporated years ago, it seems. A great shame Sad (I still have a soft spot for ABOFAL though)

TattyDevine · 15/02/2016 17:01

We get that you don't like the outfit, OP.

I would have chosen something different myself.

But why does it really matter what she wore? She won a BAFTA for her talented work.

All over the papers are best and worst dressed pictures, all women. Nothing about their achievements, very little about what they were up for and what they won.

It's bizarre. It's an awards evening. For receiving awards. She won and award, she received it. That is ALL she had to do. And she did it well.
