All she seams to do is smoke, get shit tattoos, make sexist videos, get naked etc. Very glad to see her latest album is a flop

Lightbulbon · 08/02/2016 18:50

This thread is pretty much what racist misogyny looks like (if I was trying to explain it to someone).

Awadebumbo · 08/02/2016 18:50

But why is it Rhianna and Beyoncé in particular are held to a different standard. Miley doesn't get half the vitriol those two get on here or in the main stream media. And I've never seen a thread about her or Katy Perry or Arianna Grande along the same topics.
Funny also that Beyoncé breaks the Internet celebrating being a black female and on here crickets.

CarbonEmittingPenguin · 08/02/2016 18:56

Awadebumbo If you were to say the actual reason why it'd probably be deleted or shouted down.... too bad.

Iggi999 · 08/02/2016 18:58

Carbon what a weird response to me Confused
You posted that TS has videos as bad as R's but doesn't get criticised. I asked for examples (one would do) of this as I have seen a frankly horrific video by R and have possibly not seen one by TS that is equally bad.
Of course there is racism in music but that doesn't mean I have to like videos promoting violence against women, no matter who the artist.

Vixxfacee · 08/02/2016 18:58

This is mn though. What do you expect? Hmm

Highsteaks · 08/02/2016 19:00

Everyone is always going on about how grim Miley Cyrus is. And how talentless and desperate Cheryl Cole is. And look at the shit Britney got when her record company paraded her weird 'sexy virgin' thing all over the place. And I remember when Christina Aguilera brought out 'Dirrty' everyone (including my 20 year old self) was pretty Hmm

Highsteaks · 08/02/2016 19:08

The only two major female artists I can think of who haven't sold sex to records are Taylor Swift and Adele.

Taylor Swift was a very talented teenager who came in via the wholesome country route, and didn't hit the mainstream until she was well into her twenties and already had a head on her shoulders. She also seems to have a very wealthy but grounded family who I imagine would put a stop to any suggestions of derobing immediately.

And Adele is just so talented and has such charisma that she could perform in a bin bag and no one would care.

As someone said above, all this sexiness doesn't happen in vacuum - it is part of a very misogynist industry where basically women are told they have to get their kit off to have any hope.of achieving their dreams..

Men, dont seem to be subject to the same thing, hence the likes of Ed Sheeran, James Bay, 1D and both Justins remaining fully clothes most of the time.

lostoldlogin2 · 08/02/2016 19:24

Awadebumbo and Vixxface - I'll say it.

The OP and the other "pearl clutchers" on this thread are making a hell of a lot more complaints about black female artists than white.
Rihanna is a spectacular success story, as is Beyonce. Racist twats will be happy when they flop because they don't like seeing black women doing well. They will find myriad excuses why white artists get a pass for EXACTLY THE SAME THING "Lady Gaga is artistic" "Madonna did lots of other things in her videos than sex " (and she used some lovely burning cross imagery in "Like a Prayer " - of course actually they get a pass because they are white.

Its casual, unconscious racism. Its hating Rihanna and Beyonce and finding every possible excuse to do so other than "because they are black women and I don't actually like black women very much" -most of them if accused of this would say "but I'm very left wing and have a token black friend or 2 so of course I'm not a racist"

Boring and a load of bollocks. I see it all . the. time.

Rihanna having a US No 1 album isn't a flop - its a success. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. Stop trying to drag black women down.

anonymousnosides · 08/02/2016 19:25

I saw that dumb ass girl Miley Cyrus (once) and vowed never to listen or watch her music EVER again. It's easy - just change the channel.

Why don't you all do the same everytime Rihanna or Beyonce or any black female (who sings and drops their booty like it's hot).
That way your High blood pressure will stay normal.

AppleSetsSail · 08/02/2016 19:26

But why is it Rhianna and Beyoncé in particular are held to a different standard. Miley doesn't get half the vitriol those two get on here or in the main stream media. And I've never seen a thread about her or Katy Perry or Arianna Grande along the same topics.

Miley doesn't get vitriol? I suppose you think the same of Lindsay Lohan? She's a cautionary tale.

Beyonce is considered an icon as far as I can tell. Admittedly I'm not that clued in but she seems to command quite a lot of respect, along with the criticism for being scantily clad.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/02/2016 19:41

I am well aware that Miley Cyrus is very famous and beloved by teenage girls, but I give her no thought whatsoever because she's irrelevant to me. Couldn't name a single of hers. Adéle is terribly dull. Katy Perry sings about as well as I do live so clearly caught a lucky break somewhere.

Rihanna (and Beyoncé) are both artists I listened to in my teens/early 20's. Haven't been a fan of some of their more recent music because it has been overly sexual, but threads about them will catch my eye because they have been relevant to me. It isn't, for me, about race.

I do find the "not a good role model" argument boring. They're singers, surely role models should start at home?

CarbonEmittingPenguin · 08/02/2016 19:45

lostoldlogin2 Yes and a million time yes.

CauliflowerBalti · 08/02/2016 19:57

This made me laugh...

CauliflowerBalti I know, as did this:

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/02/2016 20:46

Rihanna is not a victim - she is a very astute woman who knows her own mind and chooses just how far she wants to go. Of course, if she had the talent of many other female singers who don't use sex to sell their music then she probably wouldn't find it too hard to keep her clothes on. The sooner this type of vacuous pop music fucks off to the far side of fuck the better

And she can take Miley with her.

LordBrightside · 08/02/2016 21:39

"If you don't see anything wrong with the objectification of women in order to sell music then - which has nothing to do with expressing themselves and everything to do with shifting stock for the record companies - then we'll have to agree to differ."

Rihanna is a multi-millionaire. She does as she pleases.

Is any consensual sexual depiction of an adult "objectification"? It seems so. If not, please tell me what is and what isn't.

LordBrightside · 08/02/2016 21:43

"As someone said above, all this sexiness doesn't happen in vacuum - it is part of a very misogynist industry where basically women are told they have to get their kit off to have any hope.of achieving their dreams.."

Yet, you mention Adele and Taylor Swift. What about Emeli Sande? Or the countless other examples? Don't the fit the narrative?

lostoldlogin2 · 08/02/2016 22:05

yes yes to emeli sande....and......erykah badu?

Oops - guess they got forgotten about next to adele ad other white artists.....

Gummydrops · 08/02/2016 22:27

I donteven like Rihanna but if we are comparing Miley is far worse. She was a huge huge Disney star, her entire fan base were children. She openly smokes weeds openly says she takes harder drugs. Is constantly taking part in pornographic seedy photo shoots and is forever naked on social media and her perfomances are disgusting. In her concerts she rides a nig fake penis, smokes weed on stage and is always half naked. she no way receives the same level of vitriol Rihanna does. The double standards annoy me.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/02/2016 22:32

Is it because no one in their right mind takes Miley seriously? I certainly don't.

I can't take Taylor Swift as anything more than a petulant little girl either because of her continuous moaning about the latest failed relationship in her songs.

If we're going to talk about black female singers who are known for their musical integrity can I offer Whitney? Aretha?

It's not an either/or situation really.

Gummydrops · 08/02/2016 22:41

Miley and Taylor are taken seriously, they make milions of dollars and sell out concerts. Taylor outsold every female artist last year,so you need to be worried about them. Whitney and Aretha Franklin are huge stars however its sad that you are unable to name Black counterparts of the Miley and Taylor generation.

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 22:52

You should all go check out Beyonces awesome new video/song Formation. A masterclass in how to say something important and look insanely fierce as you do it.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/02/2016 22:55

I mentioned Whitney and Aretha precisely because I thought other singers aside from Beyonce and Rihanna were asked for.

Clearly, Rihanna and Beyonce are the most serious counterparts to Miley and Taylor but musically Rihanna and Beyonce shit all over Miley and Taylor. Nick Minaj is huge at the moment too.

I'm not sure why I should be 'worried' about Taylor Swift, unless she's planning on coming round to my house or something Confused
