All she seams to do is smoke, get shit tattoos, make sexist videos, get naked etc. Very glad to see her latest album is a flop

She's no P!nk. Who manages to quite often wear very little clothing indeed while remaining an outstandingly awesome role model to women/young girls everywhere.

The culture she represents isn't one I buy into, but in Rihanna's defence, she didn't ask to be a role model.

HelpfulChap · 08/02/2016 11:55

Not a fan of her music, image or 'message' what ever that might be.

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 11:56

I wonder if all the people critising female popstars on this thread, also are hating on all the MALE popstars who use scantily clad women and ruthlessly exploit female sexuality in their videos (usually while remaining fully clothed)?

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/02/2016 12:00

Trouble is, singers who wear little clothes (both male and female) don't exist in a vacuum. The wearing of little clothes is generally done to please the opposite sex (or same sex who are gay) and attract their gaze (and in this case, money). This traditionally, overwhelmingly, happens more with women dressing "sexy" for men. It can be empowering, but it's more likely to be acquiescing. It's terrible that women's bodies are policed in this way, and we can't win, but I don't think the way to change this viewpoint is to go "YEAH, everybody get naked, that's EMPOWERING!"

With adult eyes, I can view Miley in her bikini on a wrecking ball and go "meh, attention-seeking". With younger / teenage eyes, I worry that the message absorbed is "I have to be crazy and outrageous and semi-naked in order to be: attractive, worthy of male attention, accepted, and a cool woman". That's not a great message, and I worry for my DD growing up in a society where women are given screentime based on how "sexy" they are. Why does talent have to go hand-in-hand with visual appeal? Why does visual appeal = half-naked and licking DIY tools? Why do singers "revamp" themselves by getting "sexier"? These are the things that should change, for the entire generation of singers, male and female, who are wearing less, singing about sex constantly, and glorifying drug-taking. IMO.

HelpfulChap · 08/02/2016 12:01

I love female rock stars like Patty Smith, Siouxsie Sioux and Poly Styrene.

I do agree that the use of semi-naked dancers by various 'stars' is unnecessary. Luckily the sort of bands I like don't usually go down that route. They let the music speak for itself.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/02/2016 12:02

Lovely I asked that question earlier, but nobody deigned to answer.

Is this thing on?

CombineBananaFister · 08/02/2016 12:02

Agree with anchor about which bit is UBU and Nbu - its bad manners to revel in someones bad times but I'm with you in not celebrating all the overly sexual antics of singers to flog records no matter who it is.

I thought I was just getting on a bit tbh, but am genuinely shocked when I see some of the music videos of the younger lot - Araina Grande etc ?!? look so young and its all the open-mouthed, orgasm-faces and gyrating. The Anaconda video by Nicki Minaj is terrible. God, I sound like bloody Mary Whitehouse but I wouldn't let my DS watch it. I cringe at softplay/kids parties when I see 7yr olds copying it.

I'll get me pearls and cardi before anyone says Wink

gunting · 08/02/2016 12:03

I actually think that a lot of younger girls are rejecting the idea of miley Cyrus these days and her rubbish songs certainly aren't aimed at teenagers.

Taylor swift, Adele etc are much more popular.

Lol at people saying it hasn't flopped. Only no 1 in US and a few top 10 in other countries, when shes used to being number 1 in loads and selling loads for a long time. We will see, but I doubt it will go on to sell even a fraction of her previous albums, none of the other songs are that strong / good for commercial sucess. I'm not wishing ill on the girl, i doubt she will be needing the food bank anytime soon.

About male pop stars that use naked women, yes I hope their brand flops too. I notice Ziane is using naked women opening their legs in his video.

Yes, I am Wink

I feel pretty old most days, just shaking my fist at the TV.

The culture she represents isn't one I buy into, but in Rihanna's defence, she didn't ask to be a role model.

Yep. I am not crazy about this 'role model' business. There's something so broken about a society making demands of its celebrities in this way.

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 12:08

Number 1 in the US is pretty much all that really counts for a US artist. The rest is gravy.

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 12:11

and you are talking about an album that was released digitally 10 days ago and physically 3 days ago!

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 12:13

just shaking my fist at the TV.

but why have it on the TV in the first place?

I don't like to see it, so I don't play music videos - and just like fucking magic, I don't see it.

mpje · 08/02/2016 12:14

Does anyone buy anything phisically thesedays?

I would of thought certifications are what they care about? No use having a no 1 that sinks like a stone.

OP posts:
Sallystyle · 08/02/2016 12:14

She is number 4 in the iTunes chart.

Is that a flop?

Debuts at number 7 in the UK charts.

Not great, but not really a flop is it?

I used to quite like her, now I don't. Sick of all the half naked women in music videos to be honest and the men who exploit them. Thankfully my girl's like Taylor Swift who is one of the better role models.

mpje · 08/02/2016 12:17

For her I'd say its a flop.

Then again her RC has had little faith in this project and pushed it back years. So it may of been a sucess for them.

just shaking my fist at the TV.

We don't have MTV or similar. She pops up every now and again regardless.

gunting · 08/02/2016 12:24

I wouldn't class that as a flop

Sorry if that pisses on your parade, OP. Confused

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 12:25

"Anti's first full week of sales (124,000) was likely tempered by the album's previous availability as a free download, supported by Samsung. It was given away beginning on Jan. 27 in a limited quantity and generated 1.47 million downloads globally in less than 15 hours. Those gratis downloads did not count toward the charts or Nielsen Music's sales figures."

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 12:27

I wonder how artists 8th albums usually perform?

Actually I wonder how many recording artists actually release 8 albums?

shoeaddict83 · 08/02/2016 12:29

Youd say its a flop? So thats a statement of fact then is it from a voice of the music industry?!!

Number one on billboard which is biggest chart in the world, sold 1 MILLION copies on its first day, only her previous album topped the US charts, no others before it did.

And its a flop??
I dont like her particularly either, or what she promotes to kids who listen to her, but how you can say her album is a flop with those figures im confused!!

Awadebumbo · 08/02/2016 12:31

Because the hate is strong!

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 12:33

its only her 2nd album to ever reach US #1!
