I could maybe understand somebody starting out being pressured into it.But i dont buy the like of Rihanna being the puppet of the big bad man.As if grown woman dont have a say.And as for smoking and drinking as far as im aware they are legal for adults.

If you are after role models for your kids, look closer to home rather than than popstars.

frikadela01 · 08/02/2016 15:12

amarmai I don't actually see anyone attacking madonna. I see a thread started attacking Rihanna and people just questioning why she has so much hatred thrown at her yet madonna has arguably built her career on the same controversial themes yet is celebrated.

LovelyFriend · 08/02/2016 15:14

ah PrivetePike 'tis true

SirChenjin · 08/02/2016 15:18

it's really down to us as parents to be exerting more control over what our children watch and listen to

And the Govt to place ratings on music videos so that we can adjust our computer settings accordingly.

Thing is - when you have mainstream pop songs talking about whips and chains, and ripping asses in two and all sorts of other stuff you'd rather your 8 year old didn't hear on the car radio it becomes very difficult to exert the amount of control you'd like to because it's becoming more and more normalised.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/02/2016 15:23

Ah, SirChenjin, CDs are your friend Smile

I don't drive so I don't need to worry about the radio in the car but when the kids are with their Dad he puts it on and I've had my youngest (7) come home singing that bloody 'All About The Bass' nonsense. We also don't have any music channels on the TV, mostly because I'm 42 so therefore they stopped making decent music around 15 years ago.

What's this about a Nanny eating crackers?

Bring back Top of the Pops I say!
( cos there weren't half naked women gyrating on there then were there? except for Pans People/Legs & Co ) Grin

SirChenjin · 08/02/2016 15:26

Why on earth should we be forced to listen to CDs? Hmm If I want to listen to mainstream radio I should be able to without hearing some of the more extreme lyrics that are out there. I don't have music videos.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/02/2016 15:27

Hot Gossip! Good Lord, those dance routines and costumes...my eyes, my eyes!

Shock
SirChenjin · 08/02/2016 15:28

If the worst that Rihanna did was dance like Hot Gossip or Pans People we wouldn't be having this conversation.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/02/2016 15:30

Sorry SirChenjin, just realised my Smile must have come across as PA. It genuinely wasn't meant to be.

I like CDs (or my iPod, if I'm down with the kids) because there's no inane twaddle from the djs and I can brainwash my kids into listening to good music.

My was tongue in cheek about when they stopped making good music. Although I find myself mightily amused at my daughter thinking she's just 'discovered' Eminem, as if he's new.

SirChenjin · 08/02/2016 15:33

OK Smile

Awadebumbo · 08/02/2016 15:35

Is this the same hot gossip that regularly performed in lingerie and used S&M gear Chenin?
Because a quick Google image search has thrown up quite a few pictures where they seemed to be dressed like that.

gunting · 08/02/2016 15:36

I've never heard of hot gossip or pans people before.

Just googled. Wow.

Destinysdaughter · 08/02/2016 15:42

I have a massive girl crush on Rihanna and think her tattoos are really cool. I think over the years her nakedness has become more overt/frequent and I don't think she needs to do this to sell records and I wish she wouldn't, but I do think it's her own choice and np, she is not marketing herself at teenagers. Like others I get much more pissed off at male stars who have female dancers grinding all over them in hotpants. Jason Derulo pissed me off on Jonathsn Ross because he had both male and female dancers and the male dancers were fully dressed and doing amazing dancers and the equally talented females were in hotpants mainly grinding. There is nothing empowering about that at all.

Lottie2611 · 08/02/2016 15:56

She is absolutely shit live.
Just grinds her private parts. And I feel I do that better than her Winkthe weeknd is coming to uk and I really want to see him- but he's supporting act for her. I refuse to sit through another ten mins of that

gunting · 08/02/2016 16:01

Lottie it's worth going for the weeknd. I did the same when he supported drake a few years ago Grin

LordBrightside · 08/02/2016 16:14

I'm reading a lot of objection at portrayal of sexuality and sensuality associated with music.

Just what is the problem?

Awadebumbo · 08/02/2016 16:23

I think the perception of "Hyper/Agressive Sexuality" is what has so many people clutching their pearls, but it only happens to certain artist from what I can see.

dustarr73 · 08/02/2016 16:38

I bet if Adele went down that avenue it would be fair balls to her.But because its Rihanna people are very sniffy about it.

LordBrightside · 08/02/2016 16:51

"I think the perception of "Hyper/Agressive Sexuality" is what has so many people clutching their pearls".

Indeed. I just don't get it though, why are they so horrified by this entirely natural and positive aspect of human nature?

SirChenjin · 08/02/2016 17:06

Oh get lost - pearl clutching. Tsk.

It's more about not really believing that we're moving forward as a society when women are objectified - and continue to objectify themselves - in order to sell music. It contributes to the overall sexualisation and pornification of society which is so far removed from healthy relationships that's it's unrecognisable.

Shitting is entirely natural and positive aspect of human nature. Doesn't mean I want to see it used to sell music.

LordBrightside · 08/02/2016 17:09

But you are demanding we live in a world where all depiction of sexuality is "objectification". It's a load of nonsense, making sex dirty again by stealth. Only very sick people actually perceive other people as being objects and these people are in a tiny minority.

If women want to express their sexuality and sensuality, why shouldn't they? Why shouldn't any adult?

Puritanism dressed up as feminism is getting quite annoying now.
