To think showering often isn't good for you

I very rarely have a shower at home (helps with the cleaning and water bill too), I go the the gym / pool most days so will just have a quick dry scrub and flannel wash in the morning and a shower after workout.

Just having this conversation with a friend and she usually showers 2-3 times a day. In the morning, after workout and before bed.

I thought this sounds a bit excessive tbh.

I dont think its great for your skin to shower too much, but I do have very sensitive skin and rarely wash my face or get it wet.

Three showers a day might not be bad for your skin but it's terrible for the environment.

Shower daily here, have done for the last 30 years or so. Twice if I exercise.
Showering or bathing rarely is minging. People seem to think they don't smell, but they just don't smell themselves.

TwistInMySobriety · 28/01/2016 18:22

Eh? Where did that come from gotta? No need to take it personally.

Plotter · 28/01/2016 18:51

Shower alternate mornings, additional showers if hot flushes or exercising. Alternate mornings baby wipes on pits and bits. I only ever wash my hair and face with clean water and fresh face cloth. I don't wear make up. This regime, with occasional Diprobase as a moisturiser has solved my seborric dermatitis and very dry skin.

UptownFunk00 · 28/01/2016 19:08

I shower probably 4 days a week with flannel/wet wipe washes on the days I don't shower. Wash my hair 2 or 3 times a week.

If I get mega dirty I'll shower twice in the same day but I have to be pretty filthy. When abroad I do it at least once a day, twice fairly often as the temperature is so hot.

It's not good to wash too much it destroys natural skin oils. I'm happy with the way I do it at the moment.

snowymountaintops · 28/01/2016 19:14

I suspect that wet wipes are probably far worse for your skin than water.

I shower eight times a day. Anyone who showers less smells bad, even if they don't think they do.

Well I'm sorry for your troubles gotta but objectively three showers a day is a bad choice for the environment. Of course you may feel in your case the benefits outweigh the cons and who am I to argue with you? I was just pointing out to all the frequent showerers that there is a downside to their habit which hadn't been pointed out yet on the thread.

ppeatfruit · 29/01/2016 09:14

I thought I mentioned that it's problem if there are drought conditions, How do you frequent showerers cope then and with the water rates?

Yougotta Have you looked at the Paul Mackenna self help books? they are great at helping with eating disorders.

TwistInMySobriety · 29/01/2016 10:48

You might have done ppeat, sorry. I was thinking more on a global scale, water scarcity being one of the biggest future threats to humanity.

ppeatfruit · 29/01/2016 11:04

Yes Twist there needs to be some way of collecting the excess in Britain and getting it to where it's needed Grin . Of course there won't be a problem when the Arctic has melted and we're all under the sea Sad

TwistInMySobriety · 29/01/2016 12:04

Indeed ppeat. Plus hot showers and more water treatment works = additional energy consumption.

ppeatfruit · 29/01/2016 12:09

Yup Twist It's odd that very few people even THINK about the environment.

TwistInMySobriety · 29/01/2016 12:25

There you go. I might be a bit smelly with my shower 5 days out of 7 but at least I get green bonus points Grin

paxillin · 29/01/2016 14:28

Do people who shower three times a day change clothes thrice daily, too? Must own an industrial sized washer-dryer.

I find a daily or twice daily shower as much relaxing, and to wash the day off, as to get clean. For those that don't shower every day, do your feet not sweat in socks/shoes? And how are you getting properly clean after going to the toilet, wiping with toilet paper is very ineffective compared to properly washing - in India people wash down below after going to the loo as a matter of course.

TwistInMySobriety · 29/01/2016 14:52

@ gotta nope, sorry. DH drives a hybrid, if that helps.

FFS gotta it's not a competition. I try to minimise my environmental impact where I can, which includes only showering as and when I need it, which is not every day. I don't sweat much, I don't smell bad. I occasionally travel by car and plane when not doing so would be massively inconvenient. Over-consuming resources is a bad thing, whether it's driving everywhere or taking unnecessary showers because you think if you don't you'll somehow smell bad. Raising awareness of environmental issues is important and I fail to see what's so controversial or ire-making about it. You said upthread you have MH reasons for showering so much, I said that's fine then. You clearly feel your consumption of those resources is justified, and I'm not going to argue with you on that.

Well you're wrong then. It's something that's very important to me and I think it's an issue worth raising on threads like this. And if you don't like it, well, tough.
