To think showering often isn't good for you

I very rarely have a shower at home (helps with the cleaning and water bill too), I go the the gym / pool most days so will just have a quick dry scrub and flannel wash in the morning and a shower after workout.

Just having this conversation with a friend and she usually showers 2-3 times a day. In the morning, after workout and before bed.

I thought this sounds a bit excessive tbh.

I dont think its great for your skin to shower too much, but I do have very sensitive skin and rarely wash my face or get it wet.

I find a quick shower I feel cleaner and it's quicker than a flannel wash. Wetwipes do sod all to make me feel cleaner/smell less. Daily showers here

ClarissaBell · 26/01/2016 11:47

I'm always agog at these threads. I shower every morning and I have a bath in the evening and my skin is just fine. I think people should shower once a day at least and anything less is pretty disgusting but hey, we're all different. Just don't stand too close to me : )

seafoodeatit · 26/01/2016 11:52

I agree that 3 times is excessive (unless you're on holiday thanks to hot weather, salt water and sand but that's what outdoor showers are for!).

I do shower every day before bed because I get a bit sweaty doing the school run and it helps me feel sleepy at night.

GXmummy · 26/01/2016 11:53

ClarrissaBell I agree! My skin does have a tendency to get dry, but I use oil/moisturiser. I would really not like the idea of anything less than twice a day

ppeatfruit · 26/01/2016 11:53

I hate wet wipes too.

DefinatelyAfatb0tt0medGirl · 26/01/2016 11:59

I shower once a day and have a "bits & pits" wash at night. I only wash my hair once a week but use a dry shampoo in between. My hair is falling out and I can't wash it often.

WonderingAspie · 26/01/2016 12:05

Well I'm always agog at the amount people wash. I think twice a day showering/bathing is excessive unless you have got particularly grubby or sweaty.

specialsubject · 26/01/2016 12:05

she won't dissolve. Skin is much tougher than the beauty-babble would have you believe.

JessicasRabbit · 26/01/2016 12:06

Clarissa, good for you that you have great skin. Some of us have to avoid exacerbating skin conditions (even common ones like eczema). I shower every other day and I'm certainly not 'disgusting'. Since switching from daily to every other day showering I no longer need prescription-only eczema cream to prevent skin infection. Still can't use any moisturisers tho.

Showering more than once a day is excessive imo.

glitterbomb80 · 26/01/2016 12:12

I've been without a shower in my home for the past two weeks due to bathroom renovations, so I've been reduced to showering every other day at the pool or the yoga studio. I'm also 39 weeks pregnant.

It's been bloody horrible, I am a two showers a day person (at minimum) and can't handle the unclean feeling, even with frequent wet wiping. I should be able to have a bath tonight, if the renovation gods are kind, and I am counting down the seconds.

Tamponlady · 26/01/2016 12:14

If your a woman especially when on your period you need to shower every day and was your lady garden

Vaginas stink if there not washed daily especially in the summer yuk

ToesAndFingersCrossed · 26/01/2016 12:15

I have eczema so showering every day would be horrendous. I keep the smelliest bits clean with daily washing, and shower every 2/3 days depending on the weather. DH is similar, although he doesn't have eczema since shacking up with me and realising I don't wash every day he hasn't either and it's really helped his oily skin!

As a result, we use way less water than your average household, so it really annoys me we can't get a water meter! I guess once the baby arrives we'll be using tons so I should be greatful.

serin · 26/01/2016 12:22

Oh OP, sorry to be blunt but I don't want to get into a pool with someone who has only had a "dry scrub", which is why I generally avoid heated swimming pools now.

BuggersMuddle · 26/01/2016 12:23

I tend to shower in the morning and otherwise only after a workout.

I don't take long showers or wash my hair daily. Nor do I use excessive amounts of soap. Post-workout tends to be more of a 'rinse the sweat off', unless it was a really long workout.

I have dry skin, so I couldn't spend ages in a hot bath daily or take long, very hot showers.

OTOH I imagine for most adults, at least once a day is the minimum. We're all different though and other people will be more / less active or change their clothes / nightwear / bed linen more or less frequently, all of which might impact what they think is needed (like I can understand why some people shower at night rather than the morning, but surely that requires daily, clean PJs).

ClarissaBell · 26/01/2016 12:27

These threads always being out the great unwashed Grin

diddl · 26/01/2016 12:29

Do you not have to shower at the pool before getting in?

Otherwise getting in without is a bit yucky!

As for 3 showers a day being bad for you, well it's not something I do, but unless you have dry skin or another contraindication I would have thought that it's OK.

Depending on the temp of the water & the wash products you use.

Gobbolino6 · 26/01/2016 12:30

I shower every morning, I just feel grim if I don't, though it's probably all in my head. If I go to the gym I go first thing.

I shower before bed too if I've got sweaty, probably only once a week though.

Twinkie1 · 26/01/2016 12:41

I shower 2 or 3 times a day due to needing one to wake me up then after exercise which I'll do sometimes twice a day.

My skin is fine.

I'd think someone who had a flannel wash in the sink a bit grotty.

MackerelOfFact · 26/01/2016 12:47

Hygiene threads on MN always end in people trying to call everyone else gross or bonkers.

I shower most mornings and every evening before bed, I don't sleep in knickers but put on clean PJs and change my sheets every 2-3 weeks.

According to MN, I should apparently just shower in the morning, wear my daytime knickers to bed, and change my bedsheets every week instead. Grin

It's swings and roundabouts really!

CrystalMcPistol · 26/01/2016 12:48

My favourite hygiene threads are the shoes on indoors V shoes off indoors. They're always so very reasonable and never get ridiculously heated.

MercyPlease · 26/01/2016 13:01

I suppose you just go with what suits your skin and hygiene needs.

I shower every morning and bathe every night. i use body lotion after my evening bath.

Skin is fine.

ppeatfruit · 26/01/2016 13:24

Toesandfingers If you add seasalt to yr bathwater it is a great help to eczema, in fact I almost cured ds's with quite warm softened water and seasalt. It's lovely for hair too.

ToElleWithIt · 26/01/2016 13:32

I shower twice a day and 3 times if I go to the gym at lunch time. I don't have any skin problems. I find standing in the shower relaxing in and of itself. I also like feeling clean and fresh both before heading to work and when I get home. I think YABU to think it isn't good for you. I'll agree it isn't essential, but it isn't damaging unless you have some sort of skin condition.

What is a dry scrub?

Bexster93 · 26/01/2016 13:45

three times a day Shock . Everyone is different so I guess it's what is right for you

banff82 · 26/01/2016 14:33

I shower twice a day - morning after dog walk/before work and again in the evening after run/gym/climbing. I don't wash my hair every time, just after running or gym. My skin is never dry, I use a spray-on moisturiser which takes seconds to apply. The thought of not having at least one shower a day makes me shudder, I wouldn't feel clean. A flannel wash really isn't the same.
