To think showering often isn't good for you

I very rarely have a shower at home (helps with the cleaning and water bill too), I go the the gym / pool most days so will just have a quick dry scrub and flannel wash in the morning and a shower after workout.

Just having this conversation with a friend and she usually showers 2-3 times a day. In the morning, after workout and before bed.

I thought this sounds a bit excessive tbh.

I dont think its great for your skin to shower too much, but I do have very sensitive skin and rarely wash my face or get it wet.

I shower every day, sometimes 2-3 times depending on my working day (I support SEN and PMLD children in a hydro pool) so shower with a moisurising shower gel every time I finish a session. The chlorine dries my skin more than a shower. I only wash my hair twice a week though. If I skip a shower I feel minging.

I would say once a day is reasonable. I was brought up with a bath every sunday and rarely showered/bathed through the week, just a wash at the sink, so as soon as I 'grew up' and moved from home, showers were a daily occurence x

KinkyAfro · 27/01/2016 17:05

Once a day minimum, more in the summer months. I don't feel clean otherwise and I can't imagine putting clean clothes on an unshowered body

irretating · 27/01/2016 18:16

Vaginas stink if there not washed daily especially in the summer yuk

They shouldn't do unless you have an infection. Perhaps you ought to go see your GP.

SkiptonLass2 · 27/01/2016 18:41

If you're using a public pool you should be showering beforehand- there's really no excuse not to

I see these threads often and there's always a proportion of people who are insistent they don't smell. From my experience this is just not true - the smell of stale hair and unwashed body is really noticeable on everyone I've ever known who says this! But of course being British you never say anything...

Unless you've got a skin condition you need a shower every day. Two a day isn't abnormal if you've been excercising.

Liska · 27/01/2016 18:52

"Vaginas stink if there not washed daily especially in the summer yuk" No they really shouldn't. An unpleasant vaginal smell is definitely a sign that you should see a doctor (unless you're talking about post sex, in which case yes. PU.)

moopymoodle · 27/01/2016 20:55

Liska. Anywhere you pee out of that gets warm in clothing etc isn't going to smell great if it isn't cleaned on a daily basis. That's like saying arm pits would be magically fresh if not cleaned daily! Vaginas have allsorts of fluids-pee, sweat, discharge, TOTM.

makemineasnowball · 27/01/2016 21:02

What's a "dry scrub" when it's at home??

alphabettyspaghetty · 27/01/2016 21:29

I shower daily due to psoriasis. Anything more than that is horrific anything less is even worse. I'm at a happy medium.

YohY · 27/01/2016 22:30

At least once a day twice if I e worked out which I do every day anyway

I find the time to moisturise after every shower it's so important. The problem is the lack of moisturising. I don't know how you can shower with out it! I always go for good quality moisturer tooogmftrn the body shop dos range and can easily get through 1-2 a month

Moisturising everyday actually protects the skin against premature ageing too

carabos · 27/01/2016 23:02

Given that a shower takes 5 min max, I can't see how doing a "bits n pits", "flannel wash" or "dry scrub" whatever the hell that is saves much time tbh.

I shower before dressing in the morning and again at some point before bed. I would have a third shower if I felt I needed it without a second thought. Can't remember the last time I had a bath. Sleep naked and change bedding once a week. Never, ever swim in a public swimming pool.

Three times a day is way way too much. All that soap is stripping the natural oils from her skin. Everyone is going bonkers with anti bacterial this and antibacterial that, antibacterials kill off the good bacteria as well a the bad Unless you have some sort of medically diagnosed problem then you don't need to use antibacterial anything. The average person only needs to shower every second day. you can just have a rinse off in plain water if you are feeling sweaty . I used to suffer from eczema until I stopped using soap, I use a skin cleaner for sensitive skin & no more problems. Hot water also drys out your skin . People get into a backlash cycle where they use soap & hot water, which drys and irritates skin, which requires the slathering of creams which in turn makes your skin greasy which attracts dust and irritants and round and round it goes. You don't need to use anything but warm water on your lady bits & soap free cleanser on everything else. I suffered teenage acne & then adult acne I used every lotion ,potion & cream on my face and spent a fortune over the years, when I swapped to cleaning my face with just a microfire cloth and warm water, the acne went away. New studies have shown that using antiperspirant at night before bed is more effective than using it in the morning.

CallieG · 28/01/2016 04:19

Vaginas are self cleaning and should not have any odour. If you have a bad odour then you need to see a DR. That "Fishy" after sex smell is actually the smell of the semen not your vaginal secretions.

The modern obsession with making sure that everything is always perfumed & scented to mask the natural smells of the human body, yes you should shower after going to the gym and heavy sweaty work but if the mot strenuous thing you have done all day is hang out some washing & cook dinner then you don't need a shower.

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/01/2016 04:24

It may not be necessary for my skin to be washed every day, but it's certainly necessary for my sense of wellbeing to have at least one shower a day, if not two - in summer, after exercise, etc.

I may only need to shower every other day, but I want to shower at least once a day.

'Body washes' are grim. Unless by 'body wash' you mean getting into a shower (or bath) and washing your body.

If you mean wiping yourself down with a wet cloth, then disabilities aside, I don't understand why you wouldn't just get in the shower (or bath), and actually get clean.

CallieG · 28/01/2016 04:30

Why would you need to shower before getting into a public pool? Public pools use chlorine to kill all bacteria that may get in the water the natural oils off human skin are not dangerous. Modern filtration systems deal with all contaminants & sunblock residue.

murphys · 28/01/2016 06:26

I could tell you that if I didn't shower/bath twice a day I wouldn't be all that pleasant to be around....

I live in a hot country and don't sit in an office all day for my job. I am out and about in the heat in and out the car.

Sometimes it is 3 times, just one in the middle to cool off.....

My skin is fine. If you shower once a week or ten times a day, doesn't really matter to me. You just have to do what fits in with your lifestyle...

Iggi999 · 28/01/2016 06:31

I don't pee in my vagina.

Iggi999 · 28/01/2016 06:33

I only have time to mumsnet over my breakfast today as I have forgone a shower.

P1nkP0ppy · 28/01/2016 06:42

It isn't showering that causes dry skin etc, it's having the water too hot and using cheap/too much shower gel.
Soap is less harsh and rinses off easily, many gels are less skin-friendly.

Those who say they don't smell are used to their body odour, others may beg to differ!

imwithspud · 28/01/2016 06:48

3 times a day is excessive. I usually shower every other day, more often if needed.

BoboChic · 28/01/2016 06:51

Three small showers a day would drive me insane - I prefer one big bath where I get properly clean. But three small showers is fine, if you can be bothered.

LynetteScavo · 28/01/2016 06:52

Having a shower feels really nice though...it's not just about hygiene a shower straight after work washes the stress of the day away, then if you went to a gym class you might want to shower before bed. I sometimes have a really quick shower in the morning. But I do love a shower so sometimes completely loose track of time Grin

Showers are cheap and easy way of relaxing IMO.

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/01/2016 06:57

Yes ^^ this.

megletthesecond · 28/01/2016 07:07

3 times a day is a bit much, but some people really do sweat a lot.

Twice a day isn't too bad if you go to the gym.

I'm always amazed by people who say they don't shower every day.

What do you do, just stay still all day so you don't sweat? Even if I don't do any exercise, I still have to walk to work and back and then to the shops and then get stressed and sweaty whilst I'm at work (even though I am at my desk).

And when I wake up in the morning I am always really sweaty Blush and must shower before work.
