AIBU to judge people on their teeth?

Met a guy on Saturday night who just called me. I refused a date because he has a couple of missing teeth. Okay so maybe I'm shallow but it matters to me.

Why do people kid themselvesi that if teeth are gone at the back it doesn't notice? It does and it makes me cringe. So do rotting, or neglected teeth.

If you want to date, sort it out. Take out a loan if you have to!

My teeth are awful due to an eating disorder. I am so self conscious about them and I only got half way down this thread before I cried.

To everyone posting about how unattractive etc it is, can you not think of how upsetting that probably is for some people to read? I bet you wouldn't say it so blatantly about a squint or being overweight

CantWaitForWarmWeather · 25/01/2016 10:42
Shock

My mum lost most of her teeth in her 20s. She did everything she should to look after them but it seems genetics weren't on her side. Imagine that, in your 20s!

It affected her confidence immensely. People like you wouldn't have helped.

Luckily after years of persisting, she got dental implants on the NHS Smile It has changed her life.

Birdsgottafly · 25/01/2016 10:43

""If they were front teeth and he has clearly neglected his personal hygiene and caring for his teeth then that would matter to me. ""

You wouldn't be able to tell that, unless you were a dentist and did a Oral examination, odd thing to do on a first date, but each to their own.

""The NHS provides almost free dental care ""

Unless you're very lucky, they tend to remove teeth rather than try to save them, the dentures aren't great (I've had them) and it's easier to eat without dentures, for a lot of people.

If your 'working poor', then you have to pay for your treatment, which at starting at hundreds and going into thousands, means that some people can't, or have to wait a couple of years, causing more damage.

I've been quoted 2k for what I need outside of the U.K., i couldn't even consider getting it done here.

Jibberjabberjooo · 25/01/2016 10:44

I have to admit I do have a bit of a thing about teeth. I would find bad teeth a turn off. I'm not sure how you can tell teeth are missing at the back though.

BluePancakes · 25/01/2016 10:45

UntilTheCowsComeHome I have a similar story to you.

I have a gap at the left canine because I had a milk tooth that hadn't come out as the adult tooth never came down. It eventually got extracted after I had DD2 because it had become wobbly in pregnancy. I was given the option of a crown I think it is called but there was no way I wanted them to destroy the perfectly healthy tooth next door, to put a fake tooth on top, so I said no.

My teeth are white, perfectly straight, and I've never had a single filling, but I do have a visible gap. If you [general 'you' or OP Wink ] have a problem, then that is indeed your problem and you can go fuck yourself for all I care.

MadamCroquette · 25/01/2016 10:46

I wouldn't judge missing teeth, I'd think the person had an accident or something, and it's really expensive to get teeth fixed.

But I have talked to people with green teeth that look like they have moss on them and that is offputting. I did think "You MUST know you have green teeth and you should clean them or see a dentist?" But then I thought "Maybe it's something you can't do anything about, or you would have." Would not want to date someone with green teeth though, I admit.

LineyReborn · 25/01/2016 10:46

Exasperated you need a referral to an orthodontist, yes. My DC was referred by her dentist to the maxillo-facial dept at our local hospital, and they did all the necessary work on the NHS. PM me if you like.

shoeaddict83 · 25/01/2016 10:47

Lonny possibly. If you google Tetracycline it says it should not be given to children with developing teeth as it stains adult ones, it an antibiotic although im not certain what i was being treated for. I now have veneers the same as you but only through the generosity of my parents after 3 decades of self-consciousness and nasty comments from people exactly like the OP which hugely knocked my confidence.

MrsJayy · 25/01/2016 10:48

I read that Rylan clark paid 25k for his teeth no normal person could afford that

figureofspeech · 25/01/2016 10:49

My teeth are awf because I had horrific acid reflux for 15 years which wore down my enamel. What a shallow and narrow minded comment to make. There's a million reasons why people have terrible teeth & it's not always down to poor dental hygiene.

Jibberjabberjooo · 25/01/2016 10:49

Rylan's teeth are ridiculous though.

Well of course you're not U! I can see why a few people with bad teeth/partners with bad teeth would get huffy about your OP, but that's their problem.

I used to have very yellow teeth, apparently it was an issue with a certain kind of baby formula. I'm well aware (was made painfully aware) that people don't like to look at yellow teeth, so I got them fixed. Teeth are very easily fixed, and most dentists offer payment plans.

And ultimately someone should be allowed to disregard anyone as a potential partner for any reason. That's not awful, it's sensible.

'Judge people on how they behave. That's the only thing that really matters.'

Not really. I wouldn't go on a second date with someone I wasn't physically attracted to.

ThePrinceofParties · 25/01/2016 10:53

i have awful teeth, as a result of my parents having a pretty laissez faire attitude to dental hygiene when I was young, and it taking me until about 25 to change my own attitudes

my teeth are now well looked after, so not stained, but are very wonky and heavily filled. I also have a gap, after losing a tooth. I spent many hours (and £££) at the dentist having two different bridges fitted, both of which caused so many subsequent difficulties to the surrounding teeth that I now prefer the gap. it's not always so easy to "sort it out".

MrsJayy · 25/01/2016 10:53

They are blinding sooo white Grin

CrystalMcPistol · 25/01/2016 10:53

Rylan's teeth are bloody ridiculous. That celeb trend for horse teeth is so unattractive.

shutupandshop · 25/01/2016 10:54

I think he had a lucky escape.

ifonly4 · 25/01/2016 10:56

Fair enough it's obviously a major thing to you, but the chap is happy being himself or perhaps hasn't got loads of extra money to do something about his missing teeth.

I don't think anyone is perfect - most of us could probably do something to improve ourselves, me - a nice hair style I guess, others different clothes, improve complexion or loose weight. It doesn't stop most of us having relationships, having friends or going out to work as there are a lot who can see past that.

I'd rather end up with someone who has a couple of imperfections, but who I can trust, relax with, have fun and work through what life throws at us.

^^

This and Chloe from towie.

I was watching a top of the pops duo thing from 60/70/80 last night. People looked much more natural and actually acted more naturally. Much prefer it. Perfect pah.

CozyLinusBlanket · 25/01/2016 10:57

If you are going to be triggered by a 'bad teeth' thread, if it's going to make you cry - don't click on it, instead of reading it, crying, and then telling the OP she's awful.

I'm fat. I read plenty of threads about how awful that is. I am also aware that many people won't consider a fat partner. That's how it is. I'm not going to wail about how unfair and awful people are, and how they should be alone forever if they won't lower their standards to suit me...

Griphook · 25/01/2016 10:58

can someone explain what is wrong with sentence?
I couldn't work it out

I care about how my mouth looks!
But not about spelling or grammar - everyone has priorities, OP.

MercedesDR · 25/01/2016 10:59

Why spend out on designer clothes or an expensive haircut, but not your teeth? I'd sacrifice both for as long as needed, if I have another back tooth break.

I don't have access to unlimited funds. I have my priorities right. A couple of visits to the dentist a year, cost no more than a few nights out.

OP posts:
CozyLinusBlanket · 25/01/2016 11:02

And I agree OP. It took me 18 months to pay for my perfect teeth and they were worth every penny. We all have our own priorities, and that doesn't make us any better or worse than anyone else.
