To feed them pasta with pesto?

My db, dsil, and two dn just turned up to spend the weekend.
I am exhausted after being up late last night, looking after my own kids all day, and getting the house ready for their arrival. I was going to order (and pay) for a takeaway for dinner.

Unfortunately it is a hours wait for the delivery and the children were hungry now, so I cooked some pasta and added pesto and cream. Apparently the children aren't used to this kind of food, their grandma who lives with them usually makes sure they eat better....... Hmm.
I can punch dsil right??! Confused

I now want spaghetti with green pesto, garlic boursin and roasted veg.

MillionToOneChances · 01/01/2016 23:48

I fed unexpectedly visiting children pasta with pesto (no cream) because it was all that was available. They didn't particularly like it, but I wasn't that bothered and nor was the mother who had informed me (not asked) I was feeding them. It's a perfectly normal emergency store-cupboard meal.

ephemeralfairy · 01/01/2016 23:58

YANBU on all counts OP. but I want to hear more tales of her twattishness

slightlyglitterpaned · 02/01/2016 00:08

I want to know where the owl bedding came from, it sounds great and DS loves owls.

OP, your SIL sounds like she needs something to complain about. Can I suggest that you do something harmless but attention drawing each day to keep her happily supplied? It might be easier to deal with if it's something you've chosen.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 02/01/2016 00:10

Would you consider a slice of bread a butter a healthy meal? As i can't see it has any less nutritional value than pasta and pesto

PrimalLass · 02/01/2016 00:17

I would think that pesto has more vitamins, fibre etc than butter.

My super-fussy DD (seriously fussy) lives on pasta pesto.

Inertia · 02/01/2016 00:53

Anyone who turns up unexpectedly a day early ought to be grateful that the bedding is ready and food is available! Your SIL seems to be labouring under the misapprehension that you are staff.

LittleBearPad · 02/01/2016 01:01

So her mums on holiday and she's come early to you. Would it be reasonable to assume this is so she doesn't have to cook for her children... I'm staggered she was so rude.

MarmaladeBasedProtectionRacket · 02/01/2016 01:12

they decided to come early as a surprise

perhaps you could encourage them to leave early too, SIL sounds an absolute pain. If I have invited someone I try and make nice meals they will enjoy, but if they arrive unexpectedly they can get what they're given or sort themselves out if they don't want what I have in. As for the bedding - perhaps they'd rather camp in your garden then?

A fair point, pasta and pesto doesn't have much vegetables or vitamins, however this was a one off, not every day. The children were complaining that they were hungry. This was a meal that they liked that stopped them being hungry.

Lj8893 · 02/01/2016 09:18

I love pasta and pesto, as does my 2 year old!

littlemermaid80 · 02/01/2016 09:53

My DH absolutely hates beans on toast. With a passion. We popped in to my nan's recently (unannounced, she lives alone and doesn't get out much), guess what she made us? Beans on toast. Guess what DH did? He ate it . Without a word of complaint.

Your SIL seems to be under the impression that it's ok to criticise things and complain in someone else's house, why is that? Has she always done it?
She sounds incredibly rude and ignorant tbh, to actually stand behind you while you're cooking and criticise?? No one I know would ever do that?!
Even if you dislike a dish or think your kids might dislike it, you don't make rude comments to your host especially if you've"turned up unannounced!" You just suck it up graciously!

I would have to have a discreet but firm word with her this weekend to be honest. She needs to respect your home and show some gratitude for the kindness you're giving them.

thebestfurchinchilla · 02/01/2016 10:36

I love pesto but don't have it very often now that my dd has a nut allergy so pine nuts are out! anyone heard of a nut free version?

Pipbin · 02/01/2016 11:26

Are you sure he's allergic to pine nuts?
I don't think that pine nuts are actual nuts.
I don't have a nut allergy though and am very happy to be set straight on this.

dementedpixie · 02/01/2016 11:30

Pine nuts are seeds so he may not be allergic to them if allergic to nuts

Paddingtonthebear · 02/01/2016 11:33

DSIL sounds like a dickhead. Does she even know what pesto is?

My toddler loves pesto and pasta. Won't touch fish fingers, chicken nuggets or any of the stuff lots of people assume are kid friendly dinners though.

Penfold007 · 02/01/2016 11:42

thebestfurchincilla I'm nut allergic and most ready made pesto contains cashew nuts as pine nuts are so expensive. I make my own with or without pine nuts and I vary the herbs. It also freezes well.

bruffin · 02/01/2016 12:03

yes pinenuts are not nuts. We have found a few pesto sauces that dont have tree nuts for ds, although he doesnt seem to be allergic to cashews, a lot of the recipes changed to walnuts in recent years.

Marzipanface · 02/01/2016 12:07

Yes you can have an allergy to pine nuts.

Gruntfuttock · 02/01/2016 12:14

"Yabu. Pesto is the work of the devil."

WTF? How do you work that out?

thebestfurchinchilla · 02/01/2016 12:23

Yes I could make my own but that was part of the appeal of it really, just opening a jar and stirring. We were advised to avoid all tree nuts(pine nuts were on that list) and peanuts(ground nut) even though her allergy was to hazelnuts, walnuts and pecans. Apparently the body sometimes can't distinguish between the proteins of each nut and reacts and also the risk of cross contamination in nut processing plants.

lionheart · 02/01/2016 12:33

You are going to have a long weekend and need more gin.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 02/01/2016 12:42

"Yabu. Pesto is the work of the devil."

WTF? How do you work that out

Presumably by tasting it and deciding it tastes rank.

MEgirl · 02/01/2016 13:47

Are you sure that it's the pine nuts. Most commercial pestos are made with cashews, something we discovered when the DTs developed a cashew allergy.

Pipbin · 02/01/2016 13:50

I can't understand why people are arguing about whether pesto is nice or nasty. Here's the thing: some people like different food to you. I love blue cheese, but I understand that some people don't.
