To feed them pasta with pesto?

My db, dsil, and two dn just turned up to spend the weekend.
I am exhausted after being up late last night, looking after my own kids all day, and getting the house ready for their arrival. I was going to order (and pay) for a takeaway for dinner.

Unfortunately it is a hours wait for the delivery and the children were hungry now, so I cooked some pasta and added pesto and cream. Apparently the children aren't used to this kind of food, their grandma who lives with them usually makes sure they eat better....... Hmm.
I can punch dsil right??! Confused

Thanks OP I just had this for dinner after your post!

If they weren't expected until tomorrow don't get me started on people doing this! I don't think they can moan if you haven't been shopping etc. She would have been happy with take away but not pesto pasta? It's just poor manners.

Enjoy your gin Wink

Needtoprotect16 · 01/01/2016 19:58

Pasta and pesto is good. I d throw in a vegetable (peppers or broccoli) if they d eat it. Not sure I understand the problem

Potterwolfie · 01/01/2016 19:58

Past, pesto and peas sometimes with cream cheese or cream, and ham, sometimes salmon if I have some left over is one of our standby/quick teas; your DSIL is the unreasonable one!

Yambabe · 01/01/2016 19:59

Not only CAN you punch SIL, in this particular case I think YW only BU id you didn't!

It's New Years Day ffs, you can't exactly just nip to the shop for something can you? Sounds like they didn't bring anything with them either.....

Apart from anything else if the kids are 4 and 8 it wouldn't have done them any harm to wait an hour for their takeaway. I assume your own kids were OK to wait!

girlguide123 · 01/01/2016 20:01

pesto pasta with peas is the food of the gods. YANBU.

waitingforsomething · 01/01/2016 20:02

No way are you being unreasonable- they turned up a day early what were you meant to do?
Pasta pesto is totally adequate- I would have done the same or fish fingers in a situation like this.
Your sil is very rude.

Jibberjabberjooo · 01/01/2016 20:02

Pasta, pesto and cheese is one my favourites.

MudCity · 01/01/2016 20:05

Duckbilled...you didn't do anything wrong...don't beat yourself up about it. Your SIL is being rude and ungrateful. That is all there is to it. I'd be happy being served pasta and pesto at any time. Or a pizza. Or a jacket potato and salad. Or soup and bread.

Just because people are visiting doesn't mean you have to stand on ceremony....they can eat whatever you would eat. You go to stay with people because you want to see them and spend time with them, not for the standard of catering. If that is crucial, then maybe next time they can stay in a hotel.

Pipbin · 01/01/2016 20:13

snarl at how ungrateful they are because they are tried from the journey in unfamiliar surroundings and don't like it.

But they did like it. The children liked it and ate it, it was their mother who got pissy.

WitchWay · 01/01/2016 20:16

My only criticism would be that it might look a bit uninteresting. When I've fed children pasta & pesto/cream I chop up some tomato, pepper, cucumber &/or pepper to vary the colour / texture a bit.

Even if they don't eat the salady bits I think it looks more appealing and healthier for the critics

WitchWay · 01/01/2016 20:17

But as they ate it anyway there wasn't really a problem

duckbilled · 01/01/2016 20:19

Children fed, bathed and in bed. Now to have that gin!

Dsil's mother lives with them and from what I have seen does all the cooking.
My brother basically told her to be grateful anyone was being fed as he was under the impression that we knew they were coming today. She has calmed down about the food now and is moaning that the bedding for one of the children is too gender specific.... Give me strength!
Smile and nod to get through this weekend I think!

"gender specific bedding" - blimey Grin

cheer BTW - wine here, still haven't eating as DH is pissing about

WitchWay · 01/01/2016 20:21

*eaten not eating - that'll be the wine Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2016 20:23

Ungrateful bitch.

Enjoy that gin.

I love pesto.

Wombat87 · 01/01/2016 20:26

Pesto with pasta is my absolute favourite. Punch her, kick em out, I'm coming over!!

SingingSamosa · 01/01/2016 20:28

I'd have perhaps added something to the pasta/pesto* but as a quick standby to get them fed, there's nothing wrong with it and making comments like that as a guest in someone's house is outrageously rude!

*my store cupboard standby for my kids is pasta, pesto, a tin of mackerel and broccoli. They all love it and it's nice and healthy. Only takes literally 5 mins to cook too, with quick cook pasta (I just mix the mackerel in cold). Visiting kids often like it too, despite their parents telling me they wouldn't!

Boosiehs · 01/01/2016 20:30

Jeebus! Your SIL would get a smack in the kipper if I were you!

Deep breath OP, and more gin.

Pipbin · 01/01/2016 20:30

So he thought they were coming today but she knew it was a surprise.
Gender specific bedding? How much of it do you think you could ram up her arse?

Aeroflotgirl · 01/01/2016 20:44

Bloody hell, tell her to book a hotel.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/01/2016 20:45

Blimey she has almost zero social skills or understanding or basic etiquette.

Who the hell turns up early and then moans about, well anything?!

Make yourself a gin, a fuck off gin and offer the sanctimonious baggage tap water.

AcrossthePond55 · 01/01/2016 20:48

but as grandma is on holiday they decided to come early as a surprise

Nice. If they'd shown up at mine a day early 'as a surprise' they would have gotten PB&J.

I really dislike guests that show up early thinking it's a 'nice surprise', unless they show up with a takeaway or have already eaten.

TheSkiingGardener · 01/01/2016 20:49

Can we play bingo with what will be the next thing to upset your SIL.

I hope none of your towels are pink or blue, that might suggest who they are for.

HanYOLO · 01/01/2016 20:56

Of course you shouldn't have made something different.

It's a perfectly acceptable impromptu kids (and indeed adults) supper. In fact in our house with a dollop of cream and some broccoli (and maybe a smidgen of pecorino) it is devoured and pronounced to be the food of the gods.

Also acceptable: Egg on toast; beans on toast; egg, chips and beans; ham and cheese toastie.

Pico2 · 01/01/2016 20:56

Is the gender specific bedding the 'right gender' for the child? I know it doesn't matter, but I'm curious as to what type of twat she is. It's either 'how dare you stereotype my child' or 'he'll catch the gay'.
