To feed them pasta with pesto?

My db, dsil, and two dn just turned up to spend the weekend.
I am exhausted after being up late last night, looking after my own kids all day, and getting the house ready for their arrival. I was going to order (and pay) for a takeaway for dinner.

Unfortunately it is a hours wait for the delivery and the children were hungry now, so I cooked some pasta and added pesto and cream. Apparently the children aren't used to this kind of food, their grandma who lives with them usually makes sure they eat better....... Hmm.
I can punch dsil right??! Confused

Did the DC not like pasta pesto, or was it just "not good enough"?

If "not good enough" then SIL WBVVU and twattish to say their grandma cooks better for them.

If they didn't like it, SIL still BVU, should have simply asked if they could have plain pasta instead.

Pasta pesto is a perfectly decent meal IMO. I wouldn't serve it for a special meal but as a quick option when people are hungry right now it's perfect, especially if (as I assume) you are going to be providing other meals over the weekend as well.

KP86 · 01/01/2016 19:36

Does SIL ever prepare her family's meals or does poor old Grandma do it all for her?

Floggingmolly · 01/01/2016 19:36

Why is it normally Granny's job to make sure the kids "eat better"??
Is your SIL used to having staff and has mistaken you for the housekeeper?

fuzzpig · 01/01/2016 19:37

So they ate it... they weren't even supposed to be there tonight... er hell no she was a rude madam

balletgirlmum · 01/01/2016 19:37

Dd wouldn't have eaten it but would have been perfectly happy with pasta & Philly or pasta & passata. She'd have just had the plain pasta if neither were available.

Ds would have eaten green pesto but not red. Pesto is really good for you.

fuzzpig · 01/01/2016 19:37

And even though I'm very excited about the new years takeaway we are about to eat, I could absolutely murder pesto pasta with cream now.

SevenSeconds · 01/01/2016 19:38

My DC love pasta pesto

GoringBit · 01/01/2016 19:38

I love pasta and pesto, simple and delicious. SIL is being twattish.

littlemermaid80 · 01/01/2016 19:38

So they turned up unannounced "as a surprise?" Then presumably she complained about the quality of the meal you had to get together?

YANBU. At all. She's rude.

By the way pesto with cream pasta is gorgeous. We eat it a lot (but I use creme fraiche)

chandelierswinging · 01/01/2016 19:40

Cream with the pesto you say? Mmmmmm. Will try that! Usually just stir the pesto in neat.

balletgirlmum · 01/01/2016 19:40

And as regards the takeaway I'd have phoned when we were half an hour away so it could be ordered (or offered to pay for pick it up en route.). No need to see the menu, they all serve similar depending whether it's chinese, Indian or chippy.

Pipbin · 01/01/2016 19:41

they weren't supposed to be arriving until tomorrow, but as grandma is on holiday they decided to come early as a surprise

What a shitty thing to do! What if you weren't in?
Have they come because Granny is away so they don't have anyone to cook for them?

expatinscotland · 01/01/2016 19:44

I'd have told her she was being rude, too.

Floggingmolly · 01/01/2016 19:45

Who the hell takes their entire family to unexpectedly stay the night as a surprise?

And then whinge about the level of service provided Hmm Do they have any social graces whatsoever?
They sound a bit half witted, tbh.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 01/01/2016 19:46

I've read the word Pesto on this thread so much that it now looks wrong Confused

OP, yanbu...she's an ungrateful twat

minipie · 01/01/2016 19:47

Shock just saw your update

they weren't even supposed to arrive till tomorrow? frankly they should be grateful for anything in that case! (of course good manners is to be grateful for anything whatever the circumstances but especially if you turn up unexpectedly!)

scarlets · 01/01/2016 19:47

I've never tried pasta pesto with creme fraiche. Sounds fab.

Aeroflotgirl · 01/01/2016 19:49

I would have told her not to be so rude, that given her some addresses of local B&B, who rocks up like that without asking to stay beforehand. Rude person.

Penfold007 · 01/01/2016 19:49

They turned up 24 hours early because grandma wasn't cooking!!!! SIL is taking the mick.

Blu · 01/01/2016 19:50

Ah, ok, I was going to say 'not exactly top hosting' but also 'very rude of SIL' until you said they were not expected til tomorrow.

If every home had a Cooking Grandma installed I am sure we could all produce kids meals and adults meals to order and with no notice .

MillionToOneChances · 01/01/2016 19:50

YANBU! Sounds like she wouldn't have a clue what to cook herself without grandma to sort t ut, hence the surprise extra night.

Thurlow · 01/01/2016 19:52

I thought pasta and pesto with either some frozen veg on the side or a few cucumber slices was just what everyone fed unexpected child visitors? That or beans on toast.

Both of which are delicious meals and infinitely healthier than most takeaway.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 01/01/2016 19:53

SIL came over the other day so fed DS and her DS filled pasta and sauce. She seemed happy at the time, I checked before I cooked it and yet when she got pissed later on got angry with me for giving him 'posh pasta' Hmm. Ffs!

sleeponeday · 01/01/2016 19:54

If you invite people with DC for the weekend, you find out what the DC like and buy it in in advance. And prep it so it's ready when they arrive. You don't wait until people who have travelled to see you are ratty and starving before you cobble something together and then snarl at how ungrateful they are because they are tried from the journey in unfamiliar surroundings and don't like it.

Op said they "just turned up" and there is no mention of the kids not liking it - just the SIL disapproving of it. Nor has the OP at any point mentioned "snarling". OP has since clarified that previous posters who got the idea that the sole issue was SIL's snittiness from her words did so correctly. Not sure where you got your interpretation from? Confused
