To feed them pasta with pesto?

My db, dsil, and two dn just turned up to spend the weekend.
I am exhausted after being up late last night, looking after my own kids all day, and getting the house ready for their arrival. I was going to order (and pay) for a takeaway for dinner.

Unfortunately it is a hours wait for the delivery and the children were hungry now, so I cooked some pasta and added pesto and cream. Apparently the children aren't used to this kind of food, their grandma who lives with them usually makes sure they eat better....... Hmm.
I can punch dsil right??! Confused

How rude of her! I would feed them pesto pasta all fucking weekend now!
What did your brother say to her? I hope he had words with her about her manners.

DancingDuck · 01/01/2016 19:09

Lots of people on here must make lousy hosts. If you invite people with DC for the weekend, you find out what the DC like and buy it in in advance. And prep it so it's ready when they arrive. You don't wait until people who have travelled to see you are ratty and starving before you cobble something together and then snarl at how ungrateful they are because they are tried from the journey in unfamiliar surroundings and don't like it.

Sunnyshores · 01/01/2016 19:12

It doesnt matter what you fed them, or whether it was last minute or you;d been researching it for days - your sil was bloody rude. Try it again for breakfast!!

mouldycheesefan · 01/01/2016 19:13

I would have a meal ready for arriving guests it does sound a bit crap to be honest arriving with tired kids after a journey and the host scrabbling for food

Wolpertinger · 01/01/2016 19:13

So SIL doesn't usually ever cater for her kids but feels happy to say you do it badly Hmm

Shame she didn't pack granny isn't it Grin

MudCity · 01/01/2016 19:14

Pasta and pesto is fine. A takeaway is also fine. Your DB and DSiL should have given their children food on the journey to ensure they weren't hungry on arrival. Their nutritional needs are not your responsibility.

Janeymoo50 · 01/01/2016 19:16

Does "just turned up" mean they were not expected??

SecretNutellaFix · 01/01/2016 19:18

There were dinner plans- but you can't order a takeaway until the people eating are present. What if there is a delay and they don't arrive until half an hour after the food does?

Why didn't she provide snacks for the journey, thus meaning you didn't need to feed them immediately? How old are the children by the way?

PaulAnkaTheDog · 01/01/2016 19:19

With cream? I've never had it that way. Does it make it taste even better?

tictactoad · 01/01/2016 19:19

Pesto is the snot of the devil in my book but if they ate it without complaint SIL should just STFU.

She sounds like a lazy caaah TBH. Does she turn all their foddering over to others?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 01/01/2016 19:20

Dancing duck the op was going to buy a take away which she couldn't order until they'd arrived to look at the menu it's not her fault the take away wasn't delivering for an hour. There was no point cooking a major meal when they were planning a take away as a treat for the whole family.

As for pasta and pesto this exactly what my step dad cooked for me my mum and sister the day I arrived at theirs for Christmas. It was gorgeous and more than enough. So no YDDNBU.

Pipbin · 01/01/2016 19:20

I'm a bit Hmm at all the people laying into the OP.
She didn't have anything planned as she was expecting to be able to order in a takeaway. Also, I expect that there are a few other able bodied adults in the house who can cook too.

So people do get a bit Martha Stewart about house guests.
Really OP you should have been cooking from the moment you got up this morning. I do hope you have put fresh flowers in their room and a display of soaps and other guest toiletries.

expatinscotland · 01/01/2016 19:21

I'd have gone in and collected the takeaway.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 01/01/2016 19:21

Me either paul but I presume the cream was to make it milder for the kids!

80schild · 01/01/2016 19:22

It's a quick healthy meal - they can take or leave it IMO.

Toraleistripe · 01/01/2016 19:22

Did they eat it? My kids love it. I stir in baby tomatoes, chopped ham and mozzarella to jazz it up. Serve with salad or steamed brocolli. It's fine as a meal.

Groovee · 01/01/2016 19:23

I'd have made plain pasta as pesto isn't to everyone's liking. My SIL makes comments like these too. I ignore her now.

tanyadm · 01/01/2016 19:25

Pesto pasta is one of my favourite things in the entire world. YANBU.

BastardGoDarkly · 01/01/2016 19:26

Omg. I've just had this! Only this time I did mushrooms in garlic with philly stirred in, in the middle. Was flaming gorgeous.

But normally id just have pesto.

Bollocks to her. Yes, you can punch her

Did the kids eat it?

dementedpixie · 01/01/2016 19:26

Pesto is horrible. We often order takeaways to be collected as it is quicker

honeyroar · 01/01/2016 19:27

Just tell her they'll eat it if they're hungry, unless they're really faddy brats. Tell her you don't have a live in grandma-unpaid chef here. Then walk away and drink the remainder of the alcohol in the house!

DyslexicScientist · 01/01/2016 19:29

I make fresh pesto from herbs in the garden and good quality olive oil, not generic veg. Its uber quick really.

AyeAmarok · 01/01/2016 19:29

Sounds delicious. I'll have it if they don't want it!

duckbilled · 01/01/2016 19:33

Seems to be a mix of responses, maybe I should of made something else but it was all I had to hand to make immediately. The children are 8 and 4, and they seem to have enjoyed it!
The reason I wasn't as prepared is that they weren't supposed to be arriving until tomorrow, but as grandma is on holiday they decided to come early as a surprise Hmm. I will be out food shopping on the morning, going to invite dsil shopping so she purchase anything above my basic meal ideas Grin.
I really need a gin......

So long as the DCs like it and will eat it then I don't see a problem Confused.

What takeaway were you planning to have? How could that have been considered "better" food?
