I'd like to allay any concerns that anyone might have about my work ethic firstly. No one has ever complained about it in any job I've had. I realise that people have to work. I just find it depressing that I will likely have to continue working into my sixties and beyond. I'm 42 and would gladly retire tomorrow if I could. I also don't like how a person's place in society is defined by their job ahead of anything else. Do any MNers feel similarly?

What an excellent result, LadyM! Xmas Smile

StealthPolarBear · 04/12/2015 17:34

I don't think it all happened today...did it?

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 04/12/2015 19:32

Yep all happened before 12 this morning. When I make my mind up I just do things & hope for the best, thankfully it worked out well.

To be honest I was on the verge if a breakdown, I've has two panic attacks this week, that was the last straw I just couldn't face another 12 hr shift in that place.

I am on the sofa cuddling my kids & feeling so happy that for the guest time in ages I am with them on a weekend. I start back at work on Monday morning after having spent an hour catching up with my old work colleagues & owner of the business over coffee, just like old times.

I don't hate my job exactly, its OK, I get on well with my colleagues and it pays the bills. What I begrudge is getting up at 5.30 every day, going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark, not seeing enough of dh or dc, working hard to pay for the boss's helicopter 😕 and STILL being stuck in a house that's too small but can't afford to move. At 43 I would definitely retire now if had a lottery win and by fuck I would never get bored. (Although christian louboutin would triple his income)

lorelei9 · 04/12/2015 23:12

Okie, do you know I never even thought what I would buy if I won the Lottery...! Well, a bigger flat...and I'd take cabs instead of public transport...but actual stuff didn't occur to me because the prospect of never working again seems so exciting I've not thought that far beyond it, lol!

felinewonderful · 06/12/2015 22:07

I only work 2 days a week and that feels like too much to me. Work gets in the way, I would be much happier without it. I also dislike how people seem defined by their job/profession as if it is the most important thing about a person.

LynetteScavo · 06/12/2015 22:20

I really font like going to work, and it's not because I don't like my job - I can't think of one I'd like much more. I didn't like going to school either.

However, I bloody loved being a SAHP.

I'm always a bit bemused when people say they love their job.

Tywinlannister · 06/12/2015 22:21

YANBU.

People say things like "you should find something you love and are good at and make that your job!"

Well I do sometimes. I am very crafty and make bespoke items - not the usual things you get on those FB selling pages - I make a lot of cult items in various textiles you wouldn't normally find them in and you cannot buy in shops type things. I love it, I could do it everyday... Until someone says "Tywin, could you make me a xxx and I'll pay you (insert huge amount here)"

And then it becomes work and the very life of me is slowly sapped out through my eyes. Even if the money is well worth it, I begin to loathe the thing I love. I probably make one item a year now for people I really like.

Given the option I would spend my days with my babies, travelling or studying. Much more worth while than work and keeps you "busy".

banff82 · 06/12/2015 23:45

I don't love my job, I adore it. I also have hobbies that I really love, and we travel a lot, but even if I won the lottery I would still do pro-bono work; I already do this for charities in the UK and abroad when I can. I find it fascinating, challenging and stimulating, sometimes heartbreaking but always worthwhile. It was my childhood dream and I can't imagine doing anything else or not doing it. I'm a vet.

DP also has his dream job; he is self employed and is very successful in his field. If/when we have young children we're in a position that I could stop working if I wanted to, but I honestly can't imagine ever doing that. I will probably go down to 3 days and DP will work his schedule around that so at least one of us is always at home. I know we're lucky to be able to do that in terms of flexibility and finances.

LynetteScavo · 07/12/2015 07:13

I think having to get up and go to work is one of the worst parts of working. I'd love to take the kids to school and then do my own thing.

I would actually prefer to be 1950s house wife than go to work.

DurhamDurham · 07/12/2015 08:05

So would I LynetteScavo but I'd never dare admit it in real life as family, friends and work colleagues think I love my job and working life style. I'd love to be a 'housewife'.

There I've said it, I'll get my coat Grin

Marynary · 07/12/2015 09:11

Although I used to like my job, I hate it nowadays and would happily resign if I could afford it. It's good that so many people on this thread love their job. I wonder how many of them are over 40 and work in the public sector though. My guess is not that many! I would love to get a different job but due to my age/family ties/health it is almost impossible.

ScottishBarbie · 07/12/2015 13:18

I'm just about to start a new job after a long period of being a SAHM, which I adored and loved having time to write, sell stuff on eBay, do some freelance work etc (but sadly isn't bringing in quite enough money).

What really irks me about now returning to work, is that I've been unable to get a job in my old profession/at my pre-kids level and have had to take a job on half the money. So I'm going to be doing something I don't want to do, for less money than I used to make 15 years ago...yes, I totally agree with you OP!

Redskyatnight01 · 07/12/2015 14:19

YANBU.

I love having free time to do my hobbies, see friends, socialise, walk the dog, relax, read a book etc. I never have enough free time. I do my hobby 4 nights a week after work which means not getting home til 7.30- then have to have a shower, cook dinner, sort stuff out for work the next day and then do it all again.

I LOVE the weekends!! I have an expensive and time consuming hobby (horses) and honestly, if I won the lottery hell YES would I quit my job and just play ponies, shop and socialise all day.

We're only here once, it's sad that someone else gets to dictate how we spend our time for the majority of our lives.
