Aibu to think you don't put your tree up in November?

I've just seen my first Christmas tree post on Facebook. WTF! It's November.

It was hard to stop myself from putting a sarcastic pithy comment on their post. Trees should not be decorated until December, although it's OK in shops/restaurants once Hallowe'en is out of the way.

Anyway, it looks like a real one. I'll have the last laugh when all her needles fall off by the time I get mine up (the week before Christmas, like any sane person).

I love Christmas and my tree is going up next weekend. I know it's the first Sunday of advent but it does feel a bit early, so YANBU.

MTWTFSS · 29/11/2015 19:59

YABU, it is advent this weekend :)

Goingtobeawesome · 29/11/2015 19:59

Mines been up since July

Creiddylad · 29/11/2015 20:00

Amazed that so many people put their tree up so early.

When the kids were little we used to spend Christmas Eve putting up the tree, go to Christingle at church and then it would start to feel like Christmas.

Now we are a blended family and my kids will go to their DF for a week on the 23rd, I will put ours up when they have broken up from school, so they get a couple of days of it.

I do not feel remotely Christmassy, have not even thought about Christmas shopping, but as my kids are away, I may just get their presents in the post Christmas sales.

ProvisionallyAnxious · 29/11/2015 20:02

Yanbu. It's not a crime, of course not. However it is little bit daft and childish. I always think people who get over-excited about Christmas must live rather quiet lives with little going on.

Grin A quite life would be lovely, but sadly I don't think it's inextricably linked with one's level of Christmas-related excitement!

DH and I got our tree yesterday as we like to have it up throughout advent but I'm away for work most days this week so wouldn't have time to pick it up, and then DH is away next weekend. We did consider just leaving the tree bare until December 1st but decided that would just be miserable and it was nicer to do it when we weren't both knackered from work.

It's fecking dark up here (Scotland) so since we've moved up we've really gone for the whole Christmas as a season of light and warmth etc. The tree cheers things up a lot when night falls at c.4pm. Grin

atreya · 29/11/2015 20:02

It may be first Sunday of Advent but advent decs to me are candles, wreaths, calendars and nativity scenes (Jesus placed inside on 25th). Not trees, snowmen and baubles.

mrsjanedoe · 29/11/2015 20:03

YANBU

but the Christmas decorations are less annoying in November than they are in January (or February!)

There's such a hype about Christmas, but on the other hand internet hits on things like rightmove (for example) are at the highest on Christmas Day. It sounds like the day itself is a horrible disappointment for so many people.

I wonder how many people will find the time to post on mumsnet on Xmas day...

ProvisionallyAnxious · 29/11/2015 20:03

We also played Christmas carols whilst decorating it. [santa]

greeneyedgirl34 · 29/11/2015 20:04

I put mine up today. I normally waittil the 8th. But I'm going into hospital on Tuesday for a mastectomy. So I won't be physically able to do it after surgery.

reni2 · 29/11/2015 20:04

It is Advent Sunday.

I don't have it up, Christmas madness has hit me today. Cakes, mulled wine, carols.

whirlybird42 · 29/11/2015 20:06

Our neighbours have had their migraine inducing flashing window lights up for weeks.
We're moving house imminently so if it weren't for the dcs I wouldn't bother with any of it.

Goingtobeawesome · 29/11/2015 20:07

Greeneyedgirl34 - I hope your op goes well.

Tree not up yet, but a neighbour's is.

MardyBra · 29/11/2015 20:08

"It may be first Sunday of Advent but advent decs to me are candles, wreaths, calendars and nativity scenes (Jesus placed inside on 25th). Not trees, snowmen and baubles."

In my day we were lucky if we got a Blue Peter wire coat-hanger fire hazard.

I think it being the first day of Advent is a distraction. I very much doubt the people I know who've put their trees up are remotely aware (or care) about that.

About 2 weeks before, is about right.

We usually put ours up on 8th, but this year we'll be away. DS was sick yesterday, so we put it up together to cheer him up.

Only the tree, not the rest of the decorations, they can wait.

We take them down after 6th January.

Oh, and it's a great big plastic bastard that cost us €12 from a Chinese shop (anyone been to Spain will know what greatness they are Grin)

annielouise · 29/11/2015 20:11

I agree SwedishEdith - smiling at how everyone is grabbing on to it's Advent Sunday after one person said it. It's still November.

CombineBananaFister · 29/11/2015 20:12

Oh I remember having to do the coat hanger for school in the 80s Grin

annielouise · 29/11/2015 20:13

I have to laugh though as last year a house nearby me had a tree up on 23 February and I know for a fact that family have something to do with the local church - he's possibly the vicar or something. Non traditional lights too - blue.

MissBattleaxe · 29/11/2015 20:17

Mine are up and I am delighted. I couldn't give a tinselly glittery shit with tinkly bells on about whether people who do not live in my house approve or not.

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 29/11/2015 20:17

DH loves Christmas - me not so much - but we've always put ours up a week before Christmas even when DS was small. We take everything down on Twelfth Night. Last year we completed on the sale and purchase of our old/new house on 16th Dec and were moving long distance (from Wilts to West Mids, with half our removals not arriving till two days later) to an absolute wreck of a house so had a nasty feeling we might not get a tree up at all.

First thing we did was rush out to buy a mini decorated real tree in a pot so we'd have something, but in the end we made a huge effort and got two decent sized trees (one real) up and decorated on 23rd Grin......only for the real one to crash to the ground smashing loads of glass decs in the process!

This year we're slightly better organised, having made a good start on the house restoration process (another period moneypit!) and will go out to get tree(s) around 18th......

SanityClause · 29/11/2015 20:18

Talc, your description of your friend has me crying with laughter.

I love it when the tree goes up but not in November. Even next weekend feels a bit soon.

I did tut a bit at some FB tree shenanigans. I'm not really sure why people put pictures of their trees on FB anyway

Don't even get me started on pictures of present piles Hmm

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 29/11/2015 20:23

We put ours up today. Tis very pretty and festive.

sticks tongue out at Mardy and Maryz
