Aibu to think you don't put your tree up in November?

I've just seen my first Christmas tree post on Facebook. WTF! It's November.

It was hard to stop myself from putting a sarcastic pithy comment on their post. Trees should not be decorated until December, although it's OK in shops/restaurants once Hallowe'en is out of the way.

Anyway, it looks like a real one. I'll have the last laugh when all her needles fall off by the time I get mine up (the week before Christmas, like any sane person).

YANBU. It should be made a criminal offence even to mention Christmas before December.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 29/11/2015 20:27

Actually putting decorations up because it's advent is the exact opposite of what religious folks do. Churches tend to make things a bit less ornate by covering up the gaudy bits and putting plainer clothes on or no cloths on the altar during advent. Then they go all out for Christmas in a similar fashion to Lent and Easter.

Put up your decorations because you want to but don't pretend it's some special advent thing cos it's not really.

I have no religion any more but I love the twinkly lights and greenery and general cheeriness at what would otherwise be a pretty miserable time of year. But I like it to be special and putting it all up only to take it down on 27th December because it's been up for 6 weeks and you're bored is just a bit, I dunno what but it's not for me. Mine stay up until 12th night and I always feel it's a bit bare once they're down.

Im with Mardy. Some folks are doing Christmas wrong

AdoraBell · 29/11/2015 20:31

YADNBU Mardy, but could I persuade my teenager? Could I fuck. it's in the corner of the lounge as I typeHmm

MyCatColin · 29/11/2015 20:31

AnnieLouise are you sure that they actually put it up the 23rd of February and not just left it up from christmas?

Another neighbour of mine didn't take her tree and decorations down until Late March/ early April, a couple of years ago!

OhBigHairyBollocks · 29/11/2015 20:32

We put ours up yesterday. I was going to wait til Tuesday but I'm 8 months pregnant and needed DH to do the top with DD (because I bought a fucking massive tree this year and I LOVE IT Grin )

I'm on maternity leave too and this Xmas is going to be extra special for DD before she hates me for bringing another baby into her world

IWasHereBeforeTheHack · 29/11/2015 20:33

I'm with Moving: no tree until nearly Christmas otherwise the needles fall off, and take it and the decorations all down on Twelfth Night.

I'm a bit sad about how Christmas seems to have taken over the whole of December these days: children get over-excited waiting for December, rather than waiting for Christmas itself. And as for Christmas Eve boxes ....sheesh, glad mine aren't wee any more.

I'm not religious and am more inclined to celebrate the solstice, which is just before Christmas Day, so either way November is way too early for me.

But then I'm getting old and when I die another old custom will also die

Libitina · 29/11/2015 20:35

Local chav estate that I drive through on the way home has had several houses fully blinged up for a couple of weeks now.

annielouise · 29/11/2015 20:35

MyCatColin - yes they'd had it up since Christmas, so two months after that, not put it up from 23 February.

AlpacaPicnic · 29/11/2015 20:35

I put my shelf decorations, advent calendars and Christmas pictures up today. My Christmas bedding went on yesterday.
I love Christmas, and sparkly shit, and seeing it makes me happy.
I do it for me, and me alone.

I also bought a new festive teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. I'll put my little bedroom tree up before I go to bed.

EdithWeston · 29/11/2015 20:37

It's not grabbing at Advent Sinday.

It simply is Advent Sunday, the start of Advent, and therefore open season for doing Christmassy stuff. Including decorating. Or starting Christmas threads in AIBU not the topic. It's all ok now.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/11/2015 20:44

Ours are up, dd was really down and putting the Decs up really cheered her up. I like them up on, or near, the 1st and down on the 31st, start the new year with a fresh, clean home.

Real tree, saw the bottom off, drill an inch deep and water, then it won't drop.

MyCatColin · 29/11/2015 20:48

Ha ha Annie, I did wonder!!!
I thought it was a bit weird to take it down after Christmas only to put it up in February then leave it up until the following Christmas......I couldn't work it out!

rosy71 · 29/11/2015 20:48

I've seen a couple of trees today. I can't understand why anyone would put the tree up in November - far too early. When I was a child, we put the tree up at the beginning of the school holidays, so 19th-ish. Now we usually get one the week before, so about 1/2 way through December. We keep it up till 4/5/6th January.

I find it very sad when people take the tree down on Boxing Day. That's only the start of the Christmas period really.

DisappointedOne · 29/11/2015 20:58

Except that trees aren't actually anything to do with advent or christianity.

reni2 · 29/11/2015 21:01

I'm wearing my Christmas jumper Blush

BikeGeek · 29/11/2015 21:02

It only bothers me in so much as it gets hard to find a real tree from 20th December onwards, although the flipside of that is we've had trees for free or very very cheaply the last few years

"Except that trees aren't actually anything to do with advent or christianity."

Doesn't matter though, in a hodge podge of festival where everyone nicks the best bits. Plenty of Christmas trees in churches starting today.

Though if you're hardline of a particular religion, you might have stricter rules. Established Church of England really doesn't seem to care.

HackerFucker22 · 29/11/2015 21:05

The fake one went up in the kids room today, not yet decorated though as I forgot to pick the lights up from Argos today.

Normally we wouldn't do it so early but fuck it.

Real tree we'll get in 2 weeks for the living room

stopfaffing · 29/11/2015 21:05

Well I got the decs in from the garage yesterday intending to wait until Tuesday 1st December, but boredom and bad weather today meant that I put them up today Grin. I like to live dangerously and, judging from neighbours windows I am not the only one, hehehe.

Everytimeref · 29/11/2015 21:05

As children the Christmas decorations went up the Saturday before and when I had children I followed the same traditions, however, my sons birthday is the 20th Dec so after a few years we decided the decorations wouldnt go up until after his birthday.
I love Christmas. Happily watch all the christmas movies etc but decorations in Nov not for me.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/11/2015 21:06

Ours went up last night . Meh. We have lots of children in and out (childminding) so generally put it up at the start of December and the way dates have landed this weekend is easier than next. It's not a quick job with 2 trees, various lights and decorations etc to put up

Alconleigh · 29/11/2015 21:07

I'm 39. No one except total weirdos who we all commented about put them up before about 18 Dec when I was a kid. They just didn't. And the reason is that all the shit in the shops didn't appear till mid November. Festival creep is Rubbish. And I love Christmas!

OublietteBravo · 29/11/2015 21:09

We accidentally left an artificial one up after Christmas 2013, and it didn't get taken down again until January 2015 Blush

DH was keen to get a Christmas tree this weekend, but we've not found the time - so next weekend it is.

MissBattleaxe · 29/11/2015 21:11

There's so much bad stuff on the news recently, I think putting up trees and glittery shit up in November is a nice happy thing. It's not a crime, it doesn't hurt and everything looks pretty. If it makes the people doing it happy, I honestly can't see that it's even worth gaining a frown line over it.

As to whether it is or isn't Advent- nobody needs to justify it so you don't need to nit pick about whether that's what Advent means or whether the person doing it is even religious. It doesn't matter.

I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and enjoys whatever their own family traditions are without getting snarky if the traditions of other families differ.

Put them early, put them up late, there's no law and no right or wrong. It is a custom that is changing organically and culturally and I don't think there is a right or wrong anymore.
