Aibu to think you don't put your tree up in November?

I've just seen my first Christmas tree post on Facebook. WTF! It's November.

It was hard to stop myself from putting a sarcastic pithy comment on their post. Trees should not be decorated until December, although it's OK in shops/restaurants once Hallowe'en is out of the way.

Anyway, it looks like a real one. I'll have the last laugh when all her needles fall off by the time I get mine up (the week before Christmas, like any sane person).

Daisy I don't see how someone decorating their own house has an impact on other people.

We don't decorate our house early but it doesn't actually annoy me that others do.

Daisysbear · 30/11/2015 16:14

It doesn't actually annoy me either if a couple of people I know put up their trees in November.

But the whole thing of Christmas being pushed on us earlier and earlier does. So I think discussing people putting their decorations up early and how it feeds into all that, is very different from actually commenting on it to the person involved.
The former is just generally discussing a newish phenomenon, the other is sticking your nose in where it's not wanted.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 30/11/2015 16:16

When I put mine up tends to depend on what I'm doing for Christmas: if I'm going to be away with family it goes up a bit earlier than if I'm at home. Usually mid December, sometimes a bit later.

Some stuff came out yesterday (advent candles, advent nativity stable, Christmas scented candles etc). The more heavy duty decorating gets done when the tree goes up.

It all comes down at twelfth night, regardless of when it went up. We don't have a real tree.

SauvignonBlanche · 30/11/2015 16:24

I don't see how someone decorating their own house has an impact on other people.

It could be argued that it nomalises the celebrating of Xmas Grin before we've had Grin or even Halloween Grin.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 30/11/2015 16:29

(Not derailing, but a PS. What is the Grin funny little hat please)?

ProvisionallyAnxious · 30/11/2015 16:30

Christmas being pushed on us earlier and earlier does.

But, advent calendars etc start being opened on 1st Dec. I don't think Xmas decorations at the start of Dec is part of the trend of Xmas starting earlier and earlier. And two days before the start of Dec is an issue of convenience, not radically diluting the enjoyment of Xmas!

I agree that Xmas trees at the start of Dec etc is too early and I did mutter at Tescos for their tree being up as soon as Halloween was over. But I don't think it's too early to see the season (in terms of the lovely lights and colours and decorations and mulled wine) as starting tomorrow.

SauvignonBlanche · 30/11/2015 16:30

Saying that, I'm looking forward to getting the Advent calanders out tonight and have made DH promise to stop at a big Lidl on the way back from my hospital appointment tomorrow so I can look at festive treats.

I don't think I'd be as excited if I'd been doing all this since August. Hmm

ProvisionallyAnxious · 30/11/2015 16:30

Sorry, I meant Xmas trees at the start of Nov = too early!

SauvignonBlanche · 30/11/2015 16:32

Not derailing, but a PS. What is the tbgrin funny little hat

It's St Andrews Day, the patron saint of Scotland. Smile

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 30/11/2015 16:38

Thank you, SB. I never would have guessed from that little emoticon! Upon closer inspection (after your explanation)!! think it must be a tam o'shanter with little red sideburns? Confused
It all makes sense now Smile

Daisysbear · 30/11/2015 17:01

Oh I dunno. Christmas used to start slowly around the beginning of Dec with advent calendars, letters to santa and the decorations appearing in the shops. Then it would build gradually and hit its exciting climax on Christmas Day.
Now it seems to start on 1 November in the shops, by end Nov some people have their decorations all up and by Christmas Day you feel like the build up has come and gone.

Radiatorvalves · 30/11/2015 17:08

We had our work Christmas Party last week - 27th November. Bonkers. Although it was quite good and they didn't play any Xmas music.

I was saying how daft it was to a colleague and she said her tree had been up since October. I did my gold fish impersonation at that point.

Our tree is going up next weekend which is early for me.

Utterlyclueless · 30/11/2015 17:12

October is definitely too early

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 30/11/2015 17:19

Ours is up. Not bothered what anyone thinks about it.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 30/11/2015 17:28

Aibu to think you don't put your tree up in November

yes clearly as all seven of them (stealth boast) are plainly up and have been for a while so thinking otherwise may be problematic - unless you are a particularly interesting and twisty thinker

you may however think it unreasonable that I should put them up -
or want to
however this year I think deteriorative tolerance should be practised by all !
with a ho ho ho...and don’t forget I'm armed Biscuit

firesidechat · 30/11/2015 19:38

My grown up daughter did hers a week ago. No children to excuse this dreadful behaviour. Grin

My other daughter did hers yesterday, but does have a 2 year old.

My husband is determined to hold out till December or I would have been tempted to join in.

Sallystyle · 30/11/2015 19:50

Im drinking baileys (well alai's equivalent) cause it's nearly Xmas!

oobedobe · 30/11/2015 20:07

YANBU

Each to their own (disclaimer), but my OWN opinion is have some patience, show some restraint and wait until mid-Dec! Then it is much more magical with Christmas just around the corner...

Also if I put mine up that early the kids would be expecting Christmas soon, it would be torture for them to be made wait another 5/6 weeks for ACTUAL Christmas Day!!

Wagglebees · 30/11/2015 20:19

665 I need to know more about your seven trees. Where are they all? Are they big or small? Are you secretly Snow White? [santa]

Higge · 30/11/2015 20:22

It makes me smile that people are so enthusiastic, they are like big kids. I always want the decs down on Boxing day because I am bored with Christmas - it all looks so out of place, like a bad hangover, but I'm forced to delay this till 2nd Jan.

Wagglebees · 30/11/2015 20:49

Those who I know who put them up early aren't doing it out of enthusiasm but quite the opposite. They see it as another chore that they want to get out of the way asap. Probably why they take them down really early too. Not saying everyone feels that way but it's a popular reason I think.

I took the tree etc down the day before NY Eve for the first time last year. I've always loathed New Year for some reason and the slightly dried up dropping tree didn't help. It really made a difference, like it was a fresh start rather than dragging the previous year into the new one. Or something. I felt better about it anyway.

Katedotness1963 · 30/11/2015 20:52

I want the tree down before the New Year because I like to give the house an in depth cleaning before the new year arrives. Then fill the fridge, buy the booze and relax.

EmmaWoodlouse · 01/12/2015 10:31

DH would ideally like to put a tree up on the first of December and leave it up till Twelfth Night.

I would ideally like to put it up on Christmas Eve (if at all) and have it down by DS1's birthday on the third of January. Our tree has ugly plastic "feet" and looks rubbish when it hasn't got presents under it.

In practice we'll probably put it up next weekend, or if I'm really lucky, the weekend after. When it comes down varies - I usually got my way about DS's birthday when he was young enough for birthday parties at home but now I sometimes put up with it until Twelfth Night. DS1 is coming home to us after a term away though, so it might be possible to big up his birthday a bit more than usual.

However we do it, I do think having a tree up before December is pretty silly. If it's Advent, I can sort of see the point of it even though I wouldn't want to do it myself. If it's not even Advent I'd rather not be reminded of anything Christmassy, thank you - it drags on enough as it is.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 01/12/2015 18:26

I need to know more about your seven trees

I stuff them all in a wardrobe and then occasionally hurl myself in, shouting "Narnia here I come !"

In reality - i don’t think you’d really even notice them that much - and its not even a huge house. I suffer from S.A.D. and really like the twinkling lights, so most rooms downstairs have at least one tree - really just for something to string with lights. I do wonder if people who are so anti decorations are less affected by the gloom of this time of year.

Wagglebees · 01/12/2015 19:26

665 Grin at Narnia. I'm coming round to your house later, I'll bring the Turkish delight.
Your trees sound amazing. We have two. One in the living room and a smaller one in the dining room so we can look at it whilst we eat. I love fairy lights. I have some up all year round and you're right, they're really cheering when the days are short. I hope I didn't give the impression I'm anti-decs. I was genuinely impressed with your trees. Xmas Smile
