Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Dog the op.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 08/11/2015 00:17

Read all caps and thought it was an abbreviation for something. Apologies.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/11/2015 00:18

Thanks for the reply on antibiotics, Whothefuckissimon - that makes sense. I thought I was missing something there, in that people without a longterm prescription can't stockpile them. Of course, in some countries they can be bought over the counter, I believe.

wickedlazy · 08/11/2015 00:18

Sorry to de-rail but are there any preppers here who would know where to get a wind up charger that would fit a samsung galaxy s5? I've always thought that is one thing that would be sensible to have, not for end of world scenario but if we have a bad winter to still have use of phone if electric goes out. Sods law dictates that if the electric goes out again it will be when my phone has hardly any battery left.

Just started rtft. There is a prepping topic? How did I not know this?

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/11/2015 00:24

Oh and it was me who started the where would your ideal home be. I'm also 53 and in London and not going anywhere. It was a musing thread, not hysterical or even that serious. Just a nice fantasy when I know on Monday I'm going to be back on that packed tube.

You're not whoever I was referring to then. They said they lived by the sea currently (and needed to move inland for better prepping - for some reason.)

I don't get it, would most people not have enough in the house for 5-10 days? Confused we certainly would and I've never "prepped" in my life. Mightn't be exactly what you fancy but you'd be fed and watered easily enough.

Anything more is a waste of time, even cans don't last forever, never mind drugs. You'd have to refresh and dump all the time. Total waste of energy.

Are these the zombie apocalypse threads?! >oblivious<

Have they a whole board now??? >boggle

CalmYoBadSelf · 08/11/2015 00:31

We are royally fucked in the event of any long term problems as we live at the seaside so there is no farming nearby, we rely totally on supermarkets, and no land that could be cultivated, it is all sand.

Who the fuck Please don't let that stockpile of antibiotics build up too much and remember to rotate them. They are all paid for by the NHS which can ill afford to spend money for stockpiles

gamerchick · 08/11/2015 00:34

wicked you need something like this DURAFIED POWER INVERTER 12V DC to 120v AC 3000/6000 WATTS

or get a wire that you can plug into your car or a portable phone charger you can also plug into your car.

AllOfTheCoffee · 08/11/2015 00:34

Why would you need to move away from the sea, with the exception of coastal erosion/raising sea levels, which happen slowly and are not going to suddenly creep up?

I live by the sea and my only oh fuck plan is to loot some allotments of a couple of chickens and then Asda for wine on route to the harbour, where I will steal the biggest yacht I can find, miraculously know how to sail it and sail off to the middle of the ocean, well away from any diseased people/zombies/terrorists.

I will have eggs, fish and wine, what more could I need Grin

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/11/2015 00:35

So really, if the word spreads effectively, we can expect to see people deserting the coast and the lower lying areas in droves? Shock

There are a few films / docu-dramas that sort of fuel or justify the preppers (depending on your pov). Eg:

OP do not watch these some people enjoy end-of-civilisation-as-we-know-it scenarios - think Mad Max.

I watch this type of thing, but take t with a pinch of salt. I don't actually see myself as wanting to survive a doomsday scenaro - I'm not tough enough. I imagine I'd be dead within the first week.

gamerchick · 08/11/2015 00:42

There is a U.K. Blackout, it's still on 4od

Takes the piss out of preppers as well Wink

wickedlazy · 08/11/2015 00:43

I'm surprised at the people saying if the apocolypse came they'd rather go down in the first wave or be the first to go. Frig that, I'd be fighting to the end to keep us all alive dp would be useless, he'd be locked in our local seeing how long the beer held out

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/11/2015 00:48

There's time for that s-l-o-w creep before we're making sandcastles in Derby

Thank goodness Smile

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/11/2015 00:50

Yeah, I mentioned the UK blackout show upthread - the prepper guy became a target. Which is pretty scary in itself - who wants to be spending doomsday fighting off marauders?

There are 2 types of prepping in my view:

  1. I will not be inconvenienced by a power cut of a few days- so I'll stockpile a bit of stuff and make sure I have wind up radio and candles.

  2. I'm waiting for apocolypse, and I will be prepared and spend $1000's and all their time thinking about survival. And have guns, and mainly live in the US.

The latter are somewhat strange imo - the former is understandable.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/11/2015 00:55

wickedlazy - I don't think any of us know how we would react in a real doomsday scenario - but I'm realistic. I don't think I'd survive. I know nothing about survival - I live a pampered comfortable life and I wouldn't be prepared to either own a gun or kill a marauder trying to steal from me. I wouldn't be prepared to let a neighbour's child starve. Dh may feel differnet and become all Rambo, I don't know. We haven't actually discussed it Grin
