Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

My real point is that prepping /stockpiling is not necessarily enough - you would have to be prepared to fight off the cakeninjas of this world to keep it. I can't even venture into shops on Black Friday - or the January sales come to that - I'd rather pay full price.

Or...maybe I'd surprise myself in Armageddon Wink

wickedlazy · 08/11/2015 01:09

True, that we wouldn't know for sure until the time came. If it was a zombie apocolype I could end up having a mental breakdown for all I know.

I think if I could get a gun, I could shoot an intruder, but not sure if I could stab or beat someone to death, iyswim. Isn't that one of the reasons guns are considered so dangerous? Because it's so easy to kill with them. One pull of the trigger and boom.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/11/2015 01:12

Yeah I could probably shoot an intruder to protect myself or my children- but I live in the UK so have no guns. I can imagine I would fight an intruder to protect my dc. I would now.

In fact, I'm one of those people that is actually quite good in an emergency. But meh - I still can't see me being a Mad Max style survivalist.

MitzyLeFrouf · 08/11/2015 01:34

'Noah. The Ultimate Extreme Prepper!'

That made me 'lol'. That man had his shit together!

wickedlazy · 08/11/2015 01:40

If Noah was the first prepper, was God the first terrorist? duck to avoid lightening bolt

Amibambini · 08/11/2015 01:54

Yeah the whole Noah's ark thing is such a grim story, it's quite weird when you think about it and see it used as a really common child's toy/story/decorative motif. Cutesy apocalypse weirdness.

ConsciousPilot · 08/11/2015 01:59

Zombie apocalypse? Are you joking?

MitzyLeFrouf · 08/11/2015 02:01

Animals. Anything with cute animals (esp. cute animals x 2) makes it marketable to kiddie winks. You're right though, and I've never paused to think how strange it is that such a depressing tale made it as an entry level kids' story/toy.

My First Apocalypse.

MitzyLeFrouf · 08/11/2015 02:02

'If Noah was the first prepper, was God the first terrorist?'

Grin

I certainly wouldn't ask that question of your common or garden American prepper! I bet the first thing they stash in their fallout shelter is a bible!

Amibambini · 08/11/2015 02:26

ConsciousPilot - the whole zombie apocalypse thing is a metaphor for social breakdown. People avoid imagining themselves in a true social collapse due to war or catastrophic climate change but can happily imagine themselves in a zombie apocalypse due to its total unlikelihood of happening.

exLtEveDallas · 08/11/2015 07:24

We are still in an economic downturn. If the banks shut down for a month as they did in Greece (where in some areas customers couldn't even get their daily 50 Euros) would you have enough food/medicines/petrol to cope?

I would, as long as the gas/electricity didn't go off. That's 'prepping' but also sensible.

Nonnainglese · 08/11/2015 07:50

To me these threads are verging on scaremongering, especially as they're clearly upsetting some of us.

Most of us would cope perfectly adequately in an emergency without turning into Mad Max survivalists , thank heavens. It just makes me wonder how much food etc will be unnecessarily wasted through the stockpiling.

I'm a pragmatist, I'll deal with it when and if it ever happens. I don't imagine zombies arriving anytime soon and I cba to build an ark or a bunker.

I remember the AIDS gloom, the Cold War nuclear survival info and the Millennium Bug and the ensuing panic been around too long!

I don't imagine a Greece-like scenario is even anywhere near our horizon, thankfully, so cross that one off the Gloom & Doom List.

sonjadog · 08/11/2015 07:54

The post about in the event of a catastrophe, people stealing other people's stores showing "an unacceptable pevel of entitlement" is just about the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

Like anyone is going to give a shit about entitlement when civilization is crumbling around us.

NothingNewUnderTheSun · 08/11/2015 08:00

Seriously - if this stuff is upsetting you STOP looking! I don't do prepping but I'm kind of fascinated reading about those who do. But if it was upsetting me I'd just close the thread/not look at the topic/step away from the computer.
Many topics on MN baffle/upset/confuse me - it's really incredibly easy to not go there!
Verging on scaremongering? Oh please! Stop it. You can't be scaremongered if you hide the thread!

TheoriginalLEM · 08/11/2015 08:08

mnhq were railroaded into the topic as the "preppers" took over the Ebola topic to force their hand.

It does feed my anxiety. Maybe i spend too much time on mnet.

i hide the threads of course.

You have to open the thread to hide it otherwise it stays in active. Some health threads unsettle me but they aren't scaremongering.

The people are deluded AND the behaviour.
Utter loons.
It's just a new form of consumerism
Lol at snoozing through the power cut.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 08:13

I agree mumsnet caved too early.
Anyway the day anyone uses the right topic.
But if anyone does fashion not on fashion people go nuts!!

TheoriginalLEM · 08/11/2015 08:16

Anxiety is a funny thing - reading one sentence can freak me out for days. I am aware that is my problem. I posted this thread to see if

  1. I am the only freak upset by it
  1. is this actually something i should be worried about.
  1. i AM worried about it. The seed has been sown. Hiding threads isn't going to change that.

Seeing a few threads in chat didn't bother me. i think the fact it was given a topic of its own was what set me off.

OP posts:
BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 08:16

It's laughable. Really.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 08:17

Mind you I remember the baby modelling invasion and the crafters who made naff birthday cards with "dyes". We hated them too

Pipbin · 08/11/2015 08:17

I do understand what the op means. It does make you wonder if the preppers know something we don't.
I remember the days when we had the adverts running on the tv about how to bag and label the dead bodies and build a shelter out of a door. Used to scare the shit out of me.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 08:18

Or dies. We never knew what they were

TiggyD · 08/11/2015 08:21

You are not the only freak to be upset by it. That doesn't mean you're not a freak, rather that there are lots of other freaks about.
It's not something you should worry about as you can't do anything about it (Apart from supporting CND), and it almost certainly won't happen.
