Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Well, as you know, all the zombie movies and TV series are actually covert PSA.
So there is nothing disturbing over knowing what to stockpile for when the brain-munchers arrive (I know I am stocking tampons and condoms like mad)

Pipbin · 07/11/2015 21:23

I saw one thread where people were saying they wouldn't share food with anyone else in the event of a major disaster. The level of paranoia on the thread was quite worrying.

I saw that too, someone actually said that they wouldn't share food with next door's starving child because what was the point they would die anyway and the parents were at fault for not prepping!!

It does remind me of the 80s when we were all sure we were going to die.

IvyWall · 07/11/2015 21:23

I hide the threads.

Seems a lot of threads for such a minority interest

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/11/2015 21:25

Do you know, I've only recently clicked that it was a topic for parents of kids about to go to prep school Grin[blish]

But mostly I agree with usual

I live 20mins from a supermarket so keep basic supplies in anyway, just so I don't have to drive to the shops every day!

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2015 21:25

My response to a post asking if people had an emergency bag packed and ready to go for when the worst happens was to confirm that, yes I do in fact have a Mulberry handbag and, yes it does have hand cream Wink

IAmAPaleontologist · 07/11/2015 21:25

It is a bit crazy but on the other hand has made me think I need to organise some of our minor prepping better, simple things like a box of light bulbs instead of random collection floating around in drawers, box of batteries and a power cut box, power cuts being rather common around here and given that have no mains gas it cann be a bit annoying so I want to get a box with little camp stove, spare torches and a few tins of soup so I know there is something I can easily heat up on the camp stove. At the moment it is all in a jumble under the stairs although I do have one torch in a known location.

TPel · 07/11/2015 21:25

It is paranoid nonsense.

twirlypoo · 07/11/2015 21:25

It makes me feel like im fucking up cos I don't have supplies in.

I dunno, I kind of think that if reading/hearing about it makes you anxious then maybe buy a few extra cans of beans or something and take some action to alleviate the anxiety.

Have never heard of stockpiling condoms before but I suppose if we are all house-bound for a while then something needs to be done to take our minds off the boredom.

llhj · 07/11/2015 21:26

They're thick frankly. If the situation became so serious that we needed tinned soup and water, then we're all for it anyway. What do they think a couple of gallons of Costco water is going to do? These people need a real problem and should donate their hoarded supplies to a food bank and help someone else.

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2015 21:26

I'm sure we are all going to die.
Definitely. Grin

howtorebuild · 07/11/2015 21:27

I am rubbish, I have candles, a few litres of water, some extra tins and long life milk. I love the topic though, it's fascinating.

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2015 21:27

I have a nail file that won't run out!

originalusernamefail · 07/11/2015 21:29

Tbh if it came down to a walking dead/ nuclear winter/ worldwide plague type situation I'm fairly sure I'd want to go down in the first wave ......................

Mintyy · 07/11/2015 21:29

My elderly in-laws live in a village which often gets cut off by snow or floods so they have a lot of dried and tinned food, bottled water, candles and logs in stock.

What else is there to say - honestly?

Pipbin · 07/11/2015 21:29

This is true Chipped, but in the 80s none of us were going to make it to the end of the week.

winchester1 · 07/11/2015 21:30

I'm on the preppers board and id refer you hide us so we can talk amongst ourselves tbh

gamerchick · 07/11/2015 21:32

Ah now I backed slowly out of a thread earlier on handbags dismissing those posts as really strange. The passion for them is seriously scary. Hmm

Those spending a fortune could sell their pretty things and donate the money to a food bank.

Takes all sorts of things to be interested in.

But get it out of your system and then hide the board. There's enough interested in the hobby for a dedicated forum and people are happy.

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2015 21:32

But to me that's not prepping, that's just living their normal lives.

Same for my folks, that is sensible. Mother used to keep powdered milk and powdered eggs in stock!!

I did say that if Ocado stopped delivering I'd just lay down in the road and die.

SurlyCue · 07/11/2015 21:34

You can talk amongst yourselves whether others hide you or not surely? Confused its not as if people are standing round peering through the windows of your shed and tapping the window to ask what the rope is for Grin

GoneAndDone · 07/11/2015 21:34

I think it's bizarre too. I see it as a way of managing anxiety that is most likely displaced.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 07/11/2015 21:34

Seriously, I do not think that prepping is going to do anything for mid-term or long-term problem, unless you already live outside the city and have a huge shed full of cans and water purifier, as well as some weapons for hunting and defence (or offence...think Occupation).

But if there is a flood (not a biblical one), electricity shut down for a few days or the likes, I think that people would be more able to take stock and plan for an exit solution if they do not have to worry about having to go outside find food or drink, or a light source. In Europe, we do not have hurricanes, but having lived through a nasty one in Florida, I can assure you that having some supplies at the ready is definitely a huge advantage when roads and shops are closed, and there will be no power for some days.

Bassetfeet · 07/11/2015 21:35

I am a prepper of sorts . Just thinking ahead a bit . So have meds ,tinned food ,bottled water and torches ,batteries ,wine in garage cupboard .
Also keep cash hidden in house .

For sure it wouldn't last long but gives time if weather bad or unable to leave house . Just thinking ahead for the normal life disruptions re illness ,weather

Don't fret OP. . Just do sensible precautions .Smile..
