Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

LEM was that to me? Well, I'd die. But I can't spend my entire life worrying about it, I'd stop living and just hide under the bed. Sad

BorderTerrierControl · 09/11/2015 22:34

The mist is one of his shorter shorties I haven't read (well I did, but I was too young to take it in, IFSWIM) and I must be honest, I enjoyed the film- although at the back of my head there was a 'this is such contrived bullshit' feeling, and I'll lay money on the book lacking that.

(My dad re-told the mist to me when I was little and wouldn't sleep in the car. Didn't they just keep driving in the original version- and the lack of end to the mist was the real horror? Much better than the film)

In general anything tv-wise that comes up with 'Stephen King's the.....' I dodge like a fucking poison bullet. No. I can do without your studios idea of what Stephen King should be, ta very much.

'Thinner' was my fave from his early work. I loved Cujo but read it as a young teen and just felt really sorry for the sick dog left out in the heat Blush

gamerchick · 09/11/2015 22:36

The mist properly upset me.. It was
One of my favourite books and they went and did that!

The 2 should stay seperate I think.

BathshebaDarkstone · 09/11/2015 22:37

BorderTerrier I wish I had a spare £15...

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/11/2015 22:38

I've got 4 tins of soup, 4 bottles of gin and 2 litres of water. All sorted

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 09/11/2015 22:39

The ending of the mist (film) was actually horrific wasn't it? I'd forgotten! I watch these things then blank out the bad bits. (Good life skill to have Grin )

TheoriginalLEM · 09/11/2015 22:40

No, not to you Bathsheba

Don't all Stephen King apocalyptical novels end in a show down with a giant spider alien type thing?

The Mist was much much worse than that LEM. I was quite distraught, it was one of those if only he'd waited another 30 seconds it would have all been all right.... (the film that is). I hope we're all talking about the same Mist, and I'm not waffling on about a completely different film Grin

Siwi · 09/11/2015 22:47

Where is the preppers thread?
I don't want a helpful link; I want to be able to find it in topics.
Otherwise I only see it in active

BorderTerrierControl · 09/11/2015 22:55

Bathsheba sorry, the £15 I mentioned was what I had after rent and bills had gone out for a 6 week period. It wasn't spare, it was my food budget (and laundry budget, since I need a bus to the nearest town to wash bedding and towels, but I just did without in this instance and stank instead!). Obviously your situation will be completely different to mine, but you shouldn't sit back and feel helpless. You do yourself a disservice.

I'm feeling the need to get the mist reserved at the nearest library this weekend now! It's part of a collection rather than a stand alone novel right? Like the really sick one that included the Shawshank Redemption (one of the other novellas featured a kid who became obsessed with WWII Nazi torture, eurgh) I think it was called 4 seasons or something?.

BorderTerrierControl · 09/11/2015 22:57

Siwi it's in 'other stuff'.

Senpai · 09/11/2015 23:22

I hate all this nihilistic rubbish, so depressing.

I think nihilists would be more along the lines of "Whats the point?" and simply not prep because why bother? Grin

iamaboveandBeyond · 10/11/2015 04:18

I have four seasons here, havent read it for ages. Will have a look in the morning.

I enjoyed the mist the film Blush i love naff films though, that look like they belong on the sci fi channel! And lots of twd actors in it too

IrisVillarca · 10/11/2015 05:51

The Mist is in Skeleton Crew, not Different Seasons.

purpleponcho · 10/11/2015 07:49

I hate the film's ending. (KIND OF SPOILER.) Manipulative shite. I think the "dead kids as dramatic motif," used just for emotional impact/shock value, is lazy and shitty.

The story's ending is subtler.

swisscheesetony · 10/11/2015 07:56

Actually I quite like the film ending... You've "done the right thing" but not enough bullets for you... And then 30 seconds later... Walking dead fans will be pleased to head Andrea, dale and Carole are in the mist! Grin

IrisVillarca · 10/11/2015 07:59

The story is much better. It shows the dynamics of family, community and loss in a brilliant way. Plus the monsters are scarier.

BorderTerrierControl · 10/11/2015 08:26

Ah cheers Iris think my dad has a copy of Skeleton Crew, will have to nab it next time I'm down that way.

I didn't realise Dale and Andrea were in film version as well as Carol!

iamaboveandBeyond · 10/11/2015 10:10

Ah, ta iris :) thought i would have noticed if i owned it and hadnt read it!
Skeleton crew is £2.69 on ebay...

BreakingDad77 · 10/11/2015 15:43

On subject of related films etc I remember reading High rise by J G ballard which I saw is now being made into a film. Its about a secluded highrise which has people housed by their economic class low incomes at bottom I think and high incomes at top, with a middle mezanine level which becomes a boiling point between the two.
