Was the man in the wheelchair BU?

I'm only mentioning his wheelchair because I guess it's relevant to how people responded to him.

We were in a small cafe in a park late yesterday pm waiting for some child friendly 'fireworks' - it was a laser show thing.

Me my DM and DD got there really early and got a hot drink. A man came in, in a wheelchair that he was maneuvering himself by using his foot.

From a brief chat we had with him it seemed like he could have had something like cereal palsy but obviously I don't know.

When a BBQ gazebo area was set up outside, he left his takeaway drink on the table and went outside. The cafe started to get really busy and a group of people, several mums with about 6 children took the table next to 'his'.

Anyway he comes back in and shouts to the women to move his table back and away from the children as he was saying his drink would get spilled.

The mums were shocked at the outburst but moved the table away for him anyway.

I wouldn't have bothered posting but he did it about another 3 times to other people who dared to sit at his table. Even though he was outside, so it was a 'free' table. He wasn't even particularly nice about it but I noticed people were really quick to move even if their children had just sat down. Should they have? I felt annoyed on their behalf and felt he was being quite rude.

Disabled people (especially adults) imo are expected to work harder than others to just not offend anyone with their disability iswim.

Yes to this.

Jax of course I realise what you say.

Having CP does not give you a right to be obnoxious and rude however!

I know another CP man who doesn't use a wheelchair, he doesn't need to, but he's almost apologetic about his disability (but you really wouldn't know he has CP), he too is never ever rude. Wouldn't cross his mind.

I totally get that if you're grumpy and rude you can be that way whether you have a disability or not.... But in this case the man was and i think he should have considered why he was attending this child Friendly event (and all it entailed in the way of interacting with other people) when he knew children would be present and he of course is not a child!

reminds me of a firework event i went to with family and friends.....we got there really early and i went and stood at the front with my 4 year old and friends 2 year old.....it got really crowded by this time my husband and other were standing with us....and elderly man pushed thru the crowd with one of those mobility scooters and asked me to move so he could get to the front, i said no as im standing with 2 young children who have waited ages to see this so am not moving....he complained how he was elderly and disabled and it was his right to be at the front ....i did say 'well maybe you should have got here early then like we did'...he complained to one of the safety guys and he told him the same....he then proceeded to hit me with his walking stick. he was causing a right scene....other people just stood by and said nothing, my husband got really angry and said 'if you hit my wife again you will need an ambulance not a mobility scooter'...other people then started to get annoyed with the old guy , he was shouting and causing a right scene....he was eventually removed....thing was i was 8 MONTHS PREGNANT at the time!

It's a very mean person who won't stand back a bit so someone who is seated can sit, not stand, in front of them to see something.

It reminds me of a time when I went to see Gary Barlow in concert. I was in the disabled seats, with DH, next to me. There were about a dozen disabled people and their carers all sat down.

He came on stage, the people in front of us, but down a bit, all stood up and all we could see was their backsides. The man next to me tapped one woman on the shoulder and said "could you sit down, please?"pointing out our situation behind. She told him to fuck off. About 4 woman all turned round and told us to get fucked! Hmm The man went to see one of the stewards who told us she wouldn't be asking them to sit down because Gary Barlow had requested that if people wanted to stand they were allowed to.

They moved those of us who could walk a little bit, and manage a few stairs, but those who were in wheelchairs were left looking at the arses of the sweary women all night!

This man in a wheelchair parked his wheelchair on my bump when i was 8 months pregnant. Then he stood up and walked off saying "well I'm disabled I can do what I like" and lit lots of cigarettes he had bought with his DLA. Shocking.

If the fireworks are IN THE SKY why did you make such an effort to get there first, so you'd be at the front and not move, then?

I don't know...... but the DLR is definitely a hot bed of evil. That's all I know.

Who knew that multiple people are dim enough to not realise that fireworks are usually in the sky not at the front?! Grin

we got there early because it was at a theme park....and the children are small, why should they stand behind someone in a huge mobility scooter that obviously didnt need it...there was a childrens show beforehand in the area in front, clowns, puppet show etc.....he was just rude, and aggressive

oh well i guess you can be disabled, elderly or whatever and thats a good enough reason to be rude and aggressive..... not saying please and ramming people in the back of their legs to get what you want because you think thats okay is never okay!
