to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

But it's not as if Tara is a man who's just pretending to be a woman to get an easy ride in prison. Plenty of evidence she is genuinely living as a woman.

They are living as a woman (gender), but they are a male (sex)

sillyoldfool · 29/10/2015 20:34

Unless women shout and scream constantly our needs are immediately trampled over. It is automatically assumed that women will accommodate everyone and everything.

Tiredemma · 29/10/2015 20:34

Excuse my ignorance. Had a look at her pictures- where exactly is the '7 inch surprise' housed?

CultureSucksDownWords · 29/10/2015 20:35

"Living as a woman" - what does that even mean? How do women live that is different to men?

CoteDAzur · 29/10/2015 20:36

"I don't think possession of a penis makes someone an automatic risk to others."

Neither do I. However, I do believe that a violent person with a functional penis who is condemned to prison for assault is a danger to the women who are incarcerated there.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 29/10/2015 20:37

Your guess is as goos as mine, emma - but she wrote the profile, i assume she knows what she's talking about.

MrsJayy · 29/10/2015 20:37

Its called tucking google it basically they hide/strap it away its the same technique drag queens use

DioneTheDiabolist · 29/10/2015 20:38

YANBU OP.

I have no time whatever for the anti-trans nonsense that happens on this site, but I agree with you.

Penis=Men's prison

I get that some men who are transitioning will feel uncomfortable going to a men's prison. But that is the penalty in our society if you commit a crime and have a penis. I think that transitioning males would be better served by making the case for safeguarding measures in men's prisons rather than requesting they spend their time in women's prisons.

HeartShapedBox · 29/10/2015 20:40

Imustgodowntotheseaagain ah, right, thanks. I suppose theoretically she could be a danger then, although I'm still not sure that a male prisons right for her, either.

MrsJayy · 29/10/2015 20:41

You speak sense Dione

GinandJag · 29/10/2015 20:41

He should have thought twice before committing a crime worthy or a custodial sentence, or in fact multiple crimes that added up to a custodial sentence. He was hardly in touch with his feminine side on numerous occasions.

ButtonLoon · 29/10/2015 20:43

So how would you guys categorise my friend with XXY sex chromosomes (born with male genitalia) who is a transwoman?

StrawberrytallCake · 29/10/2015 20:45

Culture as far as I can see from the trans community living as a woman entails lots of make-up, blow dries and skirts.

Of course that's not how women really live - that involves the hardship of having hormones/womb/ovaries/periods/breasts/sexual pressure/slut-shaming/pushing to be equal that trans-sexuals M-F may never understand, because they've never had to.

icouldjusteatacroissant · 29/10/2015 20:46

attheend if she has a fully functioning penis, and uses it, then she is not living as a woman! What is the evidence you speak of? I presume she would be making far too much money to have the final op.

Tara should be housed in a male prison until she is rid of her '7 inch surprise'.

ShortcutButton · 29/10/2015 20:47

at the end of the day prisons are segregation d according to sex, not gender

ScarletRuby2 · 29/10/2015 20:49

Some of the attitudes on here are vile and utterly depressing.

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 20:50

How does your friend describe themselves then?

A woman in a mans body?
A person that feels predominantly like a woman but wants to keep their penis?

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 29/10/2015 20:52

scarlet what's vile is expecting women to put up and shut up when a person with a penis wants to be locked up with them.

ShortcutButton · 29/10/2015 20:55

Where as I find attitudes on here encouraging Scarlett

Great to see more and more people hitting trans-peak. Its certainly different to a few years ago

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 20:55

I watched the whole Caite thing. I started off feeling sorry for him and switched to calling Caite her, now I call him Bruce again.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 29/10/2015 20:56

Exactly.

A woman's prison is for women. It's about biology not societal gender. And women should get to be in there with women.

As I said, a fully transitioned transwoman would be different in my view. But that isn't what's happening here.

I am sure lots of nice , gentle men would feel a hell of a lot safer in a women's prison too. The way to deal with safety is in the man's prison.

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2015 20:57

Thanks for the explanations.

Is this also why we now talk of 'transgender' rather than 'transsexual'?

ButtonLoon · 29/10/2015 20:57

My friend described herself for years as never fitting in, never able to keep up with sport, never being a "real boy". She is the smartest person (IQ and emotional intelligence) that I have ever known. She has transitioned fully but any transwoman could be midway through that (long, intensive) process when they become incarcerated.

(Incidentally, none of the trans people I know/am friends with have ever desrcibed themselves as being in the wrong body.)

ScarletRuby2 · 29/10/2015 20:58

Hitting trains-peak?!?!

That's possibly the most offensive thing I heard in quite some time. What a vile person you are.

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 20:59

I dont get that Button? then why were they not happy in the body they were born with then? very weird.
